WSJ: Netflix Is Developing a Live-Action ‘Legend of Zelda’ Series

Provided Netflix doesn't shelf the project themselves.

I think the real issue is finding a writer who isn't just not terrible (surprisingly hard these days it seems) but also knows the games, or at least, can be bothered to do some research.

I am curious what the casting would look like. I am already cringing at some of the suggestions (a lot of which unfortunately do not seem to be jokes).

Martin Short as Link!

I will accept a non-blond Link if Thomas Sangster plays the role. He would really suit the character.

I can definitely see it. Dying his hair blonde wouldn't be out of the question either.

Sangster or bust, dammit! I will accept no one else as Link! And his hair was much blonder when he was a wee little lad. :p

Almost as big a question, who could play Zelda? I'm short on ideas there....

Yes, yes. Although it seems a little too easy to pursue actors from GOT or LOTR, this one might be too perfect to pass up.

I also think Nicholas Hoult could make a really good Link, although I'm not sure that he'd want to do a TV series.

I get the sense that if this happens, and it's a big if, that this will either be the worst thing Netflix has ever done, or be surprisingly good.

Unfortunately, the former seems infinitely much more likely.

Also this,

I can only hope that's satire.
Most definitely not true since they are still in "very early talks" about the series, let alone a green light, a story, written scripts, episodes, etc to even begin thinking of casting. And they even said "the ideal cast would be" so definitely just fancasting.

So it will be a "GoT for kids"? Sounds intriguing.
But isn't the GoT world still too gray and lacking colors?

The suggestion about drawing inspiration from Ridley Scott's Legend, is something I find to be more suitable.
Perhaps it's possible to fuse the two worlds together and do something really great?

Well, you have to consider that GoT might be the only fantasy series to ever be really, really successful and receive widespread critical acclaim. Have there really been any others? A lot of sci-fi shows do okay but fantasy is a tougher nut to crack because it's very easy to make it look cheap or lame. So if there is any fantasy TV series to draw inspiration from, it's that one.

Though I do agree; Zelda should be brighter and more vibrant.

I can't see Zelda being a colorless monotone series if they go forward with it. There's no way they would do that.

I guess it's hard to do fantasy justice on TV. Legend of the seeker was also lacking colors.
The strongest sides of GoT are the story and the cast.

No, Zelda/Link needs to be more like Legend (1985). Let's just hope that it isn't just the effects that will be great and everything else crap.

It's actualy funny that GoT has that reputation, as the books were quite colourful, showing a wide variety of cultures with different beauty standards. I actualy think it's a bit of a shame the show hasn't incorporated that more.

That is certainly a big hint at more branching out of Mario, Zelda, etc.

Pretty excited to see how this pans out.

TIME - 8 More Fascinating Things Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata Told TIME

...

That story about a new live action series Zelda series coming to Netflix in Japan may not be accurate

In early February, the Wall Street Journal reported that Netflix was developing a live-action series based on Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda franchise. But Mr. Iwata says those rumors are inaccurate.

“As of now, I have nothing new to share with you in regard to the use of our IPs for any TV shows or films, but I can at least confirm that the article in question is not based on correct information,” says Iwata.

So did the Wall Street Journal lie or did Nintendo?

It might have been just a misunderstanding or mistranslation of what was discussed.

Figures.

I hate Nintendo. It's like, just because Hollywood screwed up one of their properties 20 years ago, they'll never allow games like Zelda or Metroid (both of which would be much easier to adapt to film than Mario Brothers) to be made into movies or TV shows. Because, you know, technology as filmmaking hasn't evolved at all since 1993.

Maybe in 2167 we'll get a Zelda movie.
