WSJ: Netflix Is Developing a Live-Action ‘Legend of Zelda’ Series

22 June 2015
EXCLUSIVE: “Legend of Zelda” TV series adaptation goes to pilot stage at Amazon

Once rumored in development for Netflix, Nintendo’s “Legend Of Zelda” live action TV series is still alive but with another streaming platform attached: Amazon.

Aiming to be a “Game of Thrones” for a family audience” as reported by The Wall Street Journal at the time of the project’s announcement, epic Zelda would be the perfect bridge between the ambitious and provocative dramas & dramedies Amazon starts delivering (as Transparent or The Man in the High Castle) and their kids’ programming offer including both animated and live action series. A pilot will be shot this August, between New York and Savannah in Georgia, and will join Amazon’s next batch of pilots for an early 2016 due date, alongside Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Casanova, Guillermo Del Toro’s Carnival Row, David E. Kelley’s Trial, possibly Bryan Cranston’s Sneaky Pete previously for CBS and The Untitled Woody Allen Project (if it ever sees the light of day). A new Zelda game for Wii U has recently been postponed to 2016. Coincidence?

Interesting, though those shooting locations are interesting for Zelda. I would imagine shooting it overseas would be better.

I’m glad they’re keeping Link’s twink look but I would still prefer Mackenyu as Link. Holland is already playing Nathan drake

Better Link than Nathan Drake at least.

So if you were wondering why this never happened, we appear to have the answer. It was set to go into production in some form but then Nintendo s***canned everything because... people found out it existed.

I mean, come on. I’ve heard about projects getting scrapped because of a script leak. But torpedoing an adaptation that people have been craving for decades simply because someone found out about it? Nintendo takes skittishness to a level I’ve never seen before. The Super Mario Brothers movie was almost 30 years ago. I think it wouldn’t be too hard to avoid the mistakes made there.

Its the 21st century, you should EXPECT things to leak.

Or maybe you shouldn't always leak private things just to leak them without fear of the consequences. One of the ethics of journalism is to "minimize harm." Leaks have caused projects to fall apart before.

Whims of how other companies do business is one reason why. You guys don't get it. Nintendo and Japanese people don't do business the same way as it is in the US.

Secondly, this is just one side of the story and one person's perspective. It's not necessarily the entire truth.

This is the world we live in at the moment. Not even Marvel was able to get stop leaks from happening and we know they run a VERY TIGHT SHIP. If you expect differently then you're in for a disappointment, esp when a project is just getting together.

Why is it so important to Nintendo if people know? If it’s good it’s good, and people will see signs that it’s good. Even if they misread the signs reviews will come out and word of mouth will spread. I get it if something leaks and everyone mistakenly thinks terrible things that aren’t accurate which may be enough for them to not watch it.

Yeah I mean, the initial WSJ story said they hadn’t even found a writer yet. So it was still very early in the process.

Now, Vile does raise a point here about Japanese culture that I wasn’t thinking of. I don’t know for sure but he may be correct that in Japan, scrapping a project due to leaks might be a common practice. And I do agree that they should try to keep things under wraps as much as possible. But people are going to eventually find out. It just seems silly to me to scrap something when the only thing anyone knew about it was that it would be a more family friendly Game of Thrones type of show (duh).

Sounds like just an excuse. Probably Nintendo didn't like the direction it was going more likely.

How many leaks are actually legitimate? Very few.

If they didn't like it and it didn't smell right, then it it was for the best that they killed it.

Because in contract negotiations, a lot of those negotiations are supposed to be private. Secondly, maybe people don't want details of those negotiations getting out. And maybe if only a few people knew, it means that someone trusted violated that trust when they were told information in good faith to keep things private.

WandaVision just had the hugest leak possible.

It isnt as if these detailed negotiations got leaked. A Legend of Zelda show was in development got leaked, thats all. Happens litterally every day.

That’s a good point, yeah. Makes much more sense now.

I've seen a few scattered things, but nothing concrete.

You know what else happens every day? Film and TV projects dying or falling through.

Also it doesn't sound like this was in any advanced stage of development either. It also sounds like if Nintendo really liked it and had faith in it, they would've pulled the trigger.

I don’t want a live-action Legend Of Zelda series. Give me a Castlevania-style anime show and I’m good.

This is Nintendo we are talking about. I absolutely believe they would scrap it if they were angry about the leak.
