A remake of Don Siegel and Clint Eastwood's 1971 film.

Synopsis:
"While imprisoned in a Confederate girls' boarding school, an injured Union soldier cons his way into each of the lonely women's hearts, causing them to turn on each other, and eventually, on him."

Directed by Sofia Coppola, starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, Angourie Rice and Oona Laurence.

Set for June 23, 2017.

If this can be as psychotic as the original then we're in for something special.

This looks really interesting, but I feel kind of stupid for not knowing it was a remake. :funny:

I feel like giving this one a shot. Because I love her Lost in Translation.

Looks like this was shot in 1.66:1. The Witch used that ratio as well. I like when directors use something other than 1.85:1 & 1.78:1.

Until I saw the trailer I just assumed it was a different movie with the same name.

I'll almost certainly see this, I like both the original Beguiled and Coppola's The Virgin Suicides so this is really promising.

Ive never heard of the original film.

This is a surprise. I watched the original before. It was one of Clint Eastwood's more acted films with relatively little action but lots of drama. It wasn't particularly successful though, because people didn't want to see him playing that sort of role as it was such a radical departure from his standard tough guy image where everything goes his way.

In fact, everything doesn't go his way. In the original,

he falls down a flight of stairs, has his leg sawn off by the girls and the school mistress, and then is poisoned at the end and dies. One of the rare (if only) instances where he dies at the end of a movie.

I don't know how it would go down today. I suppose people know what they're getting and Farrell isn't solely associated with a Man with no name/ Dirty Harry image, so he doesn't have that to overcome.

There was a fair bit of underage sex in the original. I wonder if that has been expunged.

This actually seems like more of a vehicle for Hugh Jackman than Colin Farrell. I didn't even know this had been remade. It went completely under the radar.

Interesting bit on the casting: the lead was, supposedly, intended for Chris Pratt once. I'm kind of interested to see if he could strip away his immature hero persona for a role as shady as this. Maybe Coppola could have gotten something interesting out of it.

Regardless, this new version is obviously focused on the actresses. Maybe even through the point of view of Dunst's character.

Well the actresses in here are more well known than the ones in the original, but I think the original did have some focus on them.

I see in the trailer he is also walking with crutches. And that howl of agony at the end obviously refers to only one thing.

Just rewatched the original a couple of months ago. Always remembered it as being very atypical of your regular Clint movie. The women in it weren't as big name as some as these...so it should be a different dynamic to the parts.

oh thank God we are getting Colin instead of this guy

Would've still preferred Jackman to Farrell. Jackman has to remake an old Eastwood movie one day. This would've been as good as any, because it's more of a chance for acting than a chance to play a tough guy.

But there's always Play Misty For Me.

Unforgiven!

Nah, that should be Kurt Russell's.

Unforgiven is a bit too recent.

I'm thinking more of the old Eastwood films from the 60s, 70s or possibly even 80s. 80s would be about the limit though. By the time you get into the 90s, he starts getting into Oscar territory.

Firefox is one I've wanted to see remade with modern technology and CGI.

It's odd that the Beguiled is the first Eastwood film to be remade, of all his films.

Yeah, I was only half joking. Beguiled would'a been great for Hugh. I could see him put his theatricality to good use in it.

Btw, there is a Japanese remake of Unforgiven (starring Ken Watanabe) which I thought wasn't half bad.

If Jackman was the one found by those girls they would just slip into a coma :D With Farrell it's at least believable that they are still alive/able to do anything :funny:

Well no. How would it be that different to when the girls found Clint Eastwood in the original?

Jackman is a lot hotter than Eastwood.

Farrell is hot himself, either way. Can't say I blame any of these ladies that seemingly try to hop in bed with him. :funny:

I seriously hope some of the girls don't look too young. That was really rather awkward in the original with an adult man like Eastwood seducing these girls who looked like little girls.

It's been ages since I saw the original, so I can't remember if this scene is actually what it might suggest, but does this look remotely right?
