SONY, in partnership with Tohoku University, said it has developed a new laser technology that will allow it to encode discs with 25 times more data then a standard Blu-ray disc.

Each of the new discs will have a total capacity of one terabyte, or 1024
gigabytes.

The all-semiconductor laser technology uses an extremely condensed wavelength of 405 nanometres and generates high-powered
optical pulses at three picoseconds, or three-trillionths of a second.

Technical details aside, this ultimately could mean
big things for a next-generation disc format, particular for high definition films, television and video games.

Currently a standard
dual-layer Blu-ray disc provides 50 gigabytes of maximum data capacity, which is rarely ever reached by games or movies. However, with up to one terabyte of data at their disposal, publishers could pack multiple titles - up to 50 HD movies or entire seasons of television series - on a single disc.

The potential applications for video games are also substantial. With more space comes more capacity for more elaborate graphics, longer games, uncompressed multi-channel
audio, more elaborate gameplay, or multiple games on a single disc.

I know right... I dont even have access to any blu ray yet and they are already making something else. How pointless.

And "affordable"?

lol

^^ Same here man.

Looks like Sony has joined Apple on my hate list. :/

.. and omfg, no-one had the username 'Daredevil' till this month? wow. lol

I was really surprised about lack of "Daredevil" too :0

I would probably get more Blu Ray if I had a PS3. I dont have a PS3, I dont have an Xbox 360 and I have no Wii or DS either. I am lacking in the current gaming department. And Blu Ray players are extremely expensive last I checked.

A little bit ago (in an effort to help the lag problem) many registered names that hadn't made any posts in years were purged from the system. So there are a bunch of good names out there non registered now.

Why now?
People are only begining to buy blu-ray now.
This is really stupid, now we have to buy a new engine each year?

Who says you HAVE to buy a new engine each year? I haven't got a blu-ray yet. There's currently no need for it for me.

I´m exagerating but if they keep like this then they are going to make beter and better engines each time, and i didn´t buy a blu-ray yet too, but i´m going to buy a play station 3 and i don´t want a substitute to the blu-ray.

yeah the TB disc isnt new, its just now Sony got their hands on it.

Im sure they will update the firmware to have the tb discs playable

People need to calm down. Companies always develop the next evolution of their tech, soon after it's released for public consumption. Even if this is a viable successor, it will be a long while before it's become the standard.

exactly, it will take several years to bring the costs down for mass production. because 1TB disc might cost you $80-$100 right now lol

Now we can finally get an entire anthology on one disc. Good in one way, but bad in another. This is a bootlegger's dream come true.

But Blu-Ray isn't even the standard yet. This is going two steps ahead.

Probably won't be ready for a while.

We're just getting into blu-ray. I've only about 20 thus far, only recently got it.

On top of that, the direct successor to a product might not even reach consumers. It could just be a stepping stone to reach the next big thing that we might not see until 10 years from now or later. Companies squat on patents all the time, it's nothing new.

If Sony was planning to roll out a new format already it would be suicide, because consumer confidence in Blu-Ray is just now finally penetrating the mainstream. It's at a price people can afford, and people are trusting it to be a safe format to invest in for at least 10 years. If they announce something new is on the way all it does is tell people to abandon ship and that HD is not worth investing in, which would be a mighty sad shame since Blu-Ray and HD in general is finally taking off.

They might have to speeden things up if rival storage manufacturers start developing cheap Media devices for TV's that can digitally store high resolution videos or stream them wirelessly to your TV from the internet.

To rip a Blu-ray is actually a relatively painless process. Yes you might not have all the bells and whistles of BD live (which sucks anyways) but you could definitely get the 5.1 surround and high resolution (HD) video.

Obviously, I welcome the death of Blu-Ray and expensive discs.

Expensive discs? Have you seen the cost of Blu-Rays recently?

exactly, they are just a couple of dollars more than dvds if you know where to look (amazon.com) and sometimes they are actually lower than dvds. Like Terminator 2 Skynet Edition on bluray is just $10 and its packed with a lot of extras.

$15 x my 200+ DVDMovie / TV series collection = $3,000+
