Just as we were all getting used to watching movies on Blu-Ray, Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia has developed a DVD that holds 1.6 terabytes of data — or about 2,000 movies. There is nothing like having your entire movie collection on one disc.

James Chon of the Swinburne University of Technology holds up the revolutionary new DVD.

All this is made possible by adding a fourth and fifth dimension to an optical disc. By doing this, a range of different colored wavelengths can read the same physical location. Current DVDs use a red laser, while Blu-Ray DVDs naturally use a blue laser.

Researchers at Swinburne University say that a commercial release is still five years away, even though an exclusive agreement has already been signed with Samsung.

But will the everyday consumer need such a huge optical storage medium? Just think about the potential price of just one disc, let alone the player. The steeper price of Blu-Ray discs and players have hindered that technology from gaining a large share of the DVD market.

With hard drives exceeding 2TB and the future of movies heading towards digital downloads through services such as Netflix, the future of DVDs, especially Blu-Ray, may be in peril. On the other hand, you always will have the people who want a physical disc with a case and artwork so they can proudly display them.

Does the thought of having a 1.6TB disc excite you with its possibilities? Or do you cringe when you think about yet another new format that might force you to go out and buy “The Terminator” again for the fourth time?

I imagine the future as downloadable movies with optional artwork on a re-writable disk or storage space.

And I just bought Blu-ray....

Bluray is here to stay for a while. The next technology available to the public won't be for a while and then blurays will be cheap like dvd's are today. So, I see bluray as being viable for a long time.

Article was just weird. The big plus of the technology was how much it could hold, but computers can basically do that already. However, some people will still want the physical disc with case and artwork to display, well with all your movies on one disc, doesn't that kind of mean you won't have the cases and artwork?

I still don't think Blu-Ray will catch on with the general public like DVDs. It's digital download that will take over, Blu-Ray as much as it's being pushed is still in the early adopter phase.

The problem with digital download is that the site could crash. With music it's different cause the file size is smaller so it's quicker to download. But a movie is big, so you'll be there for a while and traffic can build up.

I think the future is in flash drives. Eventually they'll sell you the movie in a flash drive instead of a disc.

they always say this 1000 movies or what ever rubbish. they said the same about Blu-ray. it's just a way of communicating to lay persons how much bigger it is. they don't literally mean they would put that many movies on a disc. TV shows maybe, but they'd still be charging you for the content. so all seasons of a TV show would still cost alot more than one season, even if they both came on only one disc each.

now the current highest quality recordings would take up around 16 times as much space as on a bluray. 16 times 50gigs is 780gigs or 0.78 terabytes. that's around half of the proposed disc. add in 3d and the disc would be used for a whole movie and it's extras to the same extent as a Bluray does.

I kind of like showing off my dvd collection though. Sure it's sad to see a person be proud of a movie collection but it's my sad life!

not much until they can afford to fill more than a blu-rays worth. producing all that data costs alot for videogames.

Cool, I would be able to put all my porn on a few discs.

You could have every single movie ever made on one shelf with that.
Have disks like A-G and H-L etc.
That be crazy.

Very yes. "Tera-Disc" will be after Blu-Ray...but that won't start becoming obsolete like DVDs are right now for at least another half a decade.

well, when this comes out, that's when I'll switch to Blu-Ray

i dont want a disc with 1000+ movies on it. i think that's a bit ridiculous
