Sony giving up on Blu-Ray ?

Since people in the mainstream don't get the new technology. Waste of time
I guess only "mainstream" people watch TV? I'm afraid you have a massive misunderstanding of the marketing industry, my friend.

Laserdiscs are making a come-back....mark my words...those who still have their players and collections are gonna be happy they did so.

ps.. i would seriously buy a laserdisc player and a stack of laserdiscs before i bought a hdtv and hd dvd player.

I just have to rely on the late Bill Hicks in regard to advertising and marketing

By the way, if anyone here is in advertising or marketing, kill yourself.

Just a little thought. I'm just trying to plant seeds. Maybe one day, they'll take root. I don't know. You try. You do what you can. Kill yourself.

Seriously, though. If you are, do. No, really. There's no rationalisation for what you do, and you are Satan's little helpers, okay? Kill yourself. Seriously. You are the ruiner of all things good, seriously. No, this is not a joke, if you're going: "There's going to be a joke coming." There's no ****ing joke coming. You are Satan's spawn, filling the world with bile and garbage. You are ****ed, and you are ****ing us. Kill yourself, it's the only way to save your ****ing soul. Kill yourself. Planting seeds.

I know all the marketing people are going: "He's doing a joke." There's no joke here whatsoever. Suck a tail-pipe, ****ing hang yourself, borrow a gun from a Yank friend – I don't care how you do it. Rid the world of your evil ****ing machinations.

That is really offensive. HD IS that damned good. It is as big a leap for home entertainment as the advent of color TV and VCR's. I work in the film industry, because of HD. We are on the cutting edge of a revolution in the way films are made...period...end of story.

People that don't get HD = Dinosaurs

Go back to your 8-track cassettes, now in stereo....you know, one speaker goes "ohm" while the other one goes "pop"
I think you (perhaps many) misunderstand one thing, though. There's a difference between DVDs played on HD TVs, HD-DVDs played on TVs, and how much people are willing to spend on them.

While yeah, it may be the future, spending a thousand bucks on an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc player is just, well, stupid when regular DVDs look pretty damn good already on HD TVs, and - I'm sure we all agree - the prices for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players will, eventually, go down in price.

With me at least, it's not that I want to stay in the stone age of analog TV or whatever, it's that I don't want to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars for something that barely improves picture quality (I'm talking about HD-DVD and Blu-Ray...not DVDs and HDTVs), and will cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars less just a few years from now.

HD is not mainstream, in my opinion. They market to a limited demographic, people with money. With any new technology, it is always very expensive right out of the gate. I remember when DVD players were going for $1000, the same as Blu-Ray Players are now. This HD upgrade is comparable to VHs going to DVD. People made the same arguments before. If you can't afford to upgrade then simply wait for the market to stablize and the prices to drop. No need to act like a snobbish iconoclast just becaue you think you are better or smarter than everyone else. No, then you are just an *******. And nobody likes an *******.
You cannot even answer my question, because you know you cannot justify it. The market is not limited to people with money, but also to people with credit. I would be willing to bet that if you own a HDTV, you owe money on a credit card.

When I was 25, I was single and had a high paying job, but was deep in debt because I had a brand new $50000 luxury sedan, a $700 DVD player, a $3000 stereo system and a bunch of needless garbage that I was led to believe I needed. All of my friends were born into money, and all of my girlfriends were impressed by $$$. One day, looking at the amount I owed on credit cards and all of the junk in my home, I realized that I didn't need it. No only that, but I enjoyed listening to my Beatles CDs as much on a $100 system as I did on my $$$ system. So I sold it all off on eBay, began living well below my means, cot rid of my cell phone, (I am never more than 10 minutes from home, what do I need a cell phone and $100 month bill for?) paid off my credit cards and now, six years later I have no debt, I own my home, I have invested $$$ and I am much happier. I am in the position now that I can walk into Best Buy and purchase the most expensive TV in the place and pay with cash. But I choose not to.

Exactly.

I have almost 400 standard DVDs, a mere 32" regular (but nice) TV, and a regular DVD player with a DD 5.1 reciever. I haven't the money to spend thousands and thousands upgrading all of that for an admittedly good boost in a/v quality. So SD format is good enough for me.

Now if I were rich, it'd be a different story entirely.
