The first Blu-Ray player from Sony, the BDP-S1, has been pushed back to an October 25th release date - meaning that the firm's consumer Blu-Ray product line will not appear until only weeks before the arrival of the PlayStation 3.

The BDP-S1 had most recently been scheduled for a mid-August launch date, and the new delay of over two months puts the release of the player curiously close to the PlayStation 3 - which will be appearing only weeks later in mid-November.

It had been assumed that Sony and its partners would want to launch Blu-Ray players and content into the market well ahead of the arrival of PS3, in order to ensure that the standard was understood by consumers by the time the expensive next-gen console appeared.

However, with the ongoing delays to the BDP-S1, it now appears that the PlayStation 3 is set to be a very early standard bearer for the high definition Blu-Ray discs - which may reflect simply a failure by Sony to get its hardware manufacturing timescales right, but equally could represent a change of strategy on the part of the Japanese consumer electronics giant.

The BDP-S1 is due to launch at a price point of $999.95 in North America, significantly more expensive than the PlayStation 3, which also offers Blu-Ray playback alongside its capabilities as a videogame console.

Toshiba's rival HD-DVD standard, meanwhile, is currently staggering onto the market - but so far the consumer response to both next-gen DVD systems seems largely apathetic, and it remains to be seen whether there is anything remotely compelling in the content line-up for either standard come Christmas.

And the world keeps turning...

You really dont like Sony do ya? Somthing personal?

No, I qute like them... Apart from all the crap they keep shoving at me that is.

I just enjoy anyone who makes such grand plans to fall on their face :) (I did the same thing with M$ and the crap way they handled the X360 launch... SONY are just giving me more ammo than M$ did)

I dont think Microsoft fell on their face??? As for Sony and their PS3, i dont plan on buying the system, but im still certain theyll sell an ass-load of em.

They made plenty of mistakes with the launch.

Im sure ur right, could you name some? For me personally, it was flawless. I thought it had great launch games. I mean i still play the hell out of CoD2.

Shortages... they have rendered their first mover advantage pretty impotent imo, and the PS3 is getting much broader software support this generation then the last. The only saving grace for Microsoft is the price of the PS3. That's the one thing that has possibly saved them from being steamrolled.

It's only the Sony Blue Ray player that has been pushed back, the others are still on schedule. I think that the only Blue Ray Player that would be a blow to have pushed back at this stage would be the PS3. It's pretty important to the initial strength of the format.

WELL, DUH. IN FACT, I REFUSE TO BELIEVE THAT IT JUST KEEPS "GETTING DELAYED". I THINK IT'S PRETTY OBVIOUS THEY DON'T WANT ANYONE BUYING A 'BLU-RAY' PLAYER IN THE NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS, UNLESS IT'S IN A 'PS3'. :o

By being a few million ahead of the PS3 and Wii before they launch? I don't think so.

If by "much" you mean "we're getting more PC ports now than we were a few years ago" then I agree. But the PS2 got a lot of PC ports before the differences in architecture just made ports of games that didn't look like ass unfeasable.

Otherwise, no. Software support is basically the same.

The only saving grace for Microsoft is the price of the PS3. That's the one thing that has possibly saved them from being steamrolled.
What a cop-out. Microsoft has a lot more going for them than just a better price.

True, but the price is the major reason why people are turning to the 360.

I think a lot of people just have fond memories with the Xbox that they expect will roll into the Xbox360. The Xbox 1 had a lot of momentum going and then Microsoft cut it off short, leaving some people wanting more and saying "The Xbox isn't finished yet".

I don't think it was ready either, but people are not buying the 360 ONLY because of it's price.

I didn't say they were. I said it was a major reason, but not the only reason. I feel the same way about the PS2 (except it is ready to move on).

The console that is most ready to move on is the Gamecube, which died shortly after RE4. Because of this, I wish the "Wii" was just a controller that attached to the Gamecube which is what Nintendo originally thought to do, but I guess new hardware brings a degree of excitement.

The Wii is based on a super set of the Gamecube hardware so it's better then a Gamecube. :) Releasing an add on wouldn't have allowed them anywhere enar the same excitment.

That whole Blu-ray, HD-DVD thing is just plain confuzzlin' to me...

the wiimote was never an add on. you would've had to program the chip inside the gamecube to understand the controller movements, so how were they going to accomplish that?!

That's a shame, because it pretty much guarantees that Blu-Ray is going to fall flat on it's ass, even though Blu-Ray right now is head and shoulders above the best that HD-DVD will have to offer two or even three years from now.

Put the chip inside the controller? All the gamecube would need to do would be to understand USB input.
