SPARTACUS: War of the Damned! Final Season!

What i'm trying to argue is that the show seemingly wants to be white vs. black scenario, instead of trying to show what it is: Shades of Grey everywhere.

There is grey all over the place, the rebels have killed innocent people, the producers have talked about it:

Steven S. DeKnight: Something that was very important to me and Rob Tapert going into this season was not to shy away from the brutality of our heroes. That historically, actually historically it was much worse. The rebels broke out and basically raped, pillaged, and murdered their way across the land. So we always wanted to show that and to explore, you know, how that in a way the rebels are right in what they’re doing. They’re lashing out at the society that tortured them, and murdered them. On the other hand, they’re not lashing out at people that are guilty. The innocent get cut down just as much as the ones that perpetrated the crime. So it’s a very grey area morally with what the rebels do.

And there’s a lot of discussion with Starz, and this discussion went all the way back to the first season when the rebels were breaking out of Batiatus' Ludus, the question came up, “Well there are women in the ludus. Shouldn’t they spare the women?” and Rob Tapert and I went, “Hell no. Of course they shouldn’t spare the women.” These are the same women that were standing up on the balcony, you know, yelling for two gladiators to kill each other. So just because they’re women, doesn’t mean that they’re forgiven for their crimes in our world. And that really carries through this season, to an extreme. We explore some pretty dark, brutal things that happened on the rebels side. That really make you question whether or not you want to be rooting for the rebels. There’s a particular episode early on that is very, very brutal. Episode 3.

It's irrelevant what is being talked about, i'm talking how the tv show portrays this.

They have touched upon it in the show, but I agree that for the most part Spartacus and his cohorts are generally portrayed in a pretty heroic light.

Re: Black/White/Grey

I think everyone this season is firmly in the grey area. To date, Marcus Crassus hasn't done anything particularly despicable. I think they've portrayed him as quite a "heroic" character. Even though he is certainly acting in his own interests in fighting Spartacus and wants all the glory that a victory will provide, to an extent, Crassus is also fighting to protect his Roman ideals and is using his vast monetary resources to protect the lives of Romans (particularly the old, rich and powerful Romans).

Similarly, while Caesar encouraged the slaughter of all of the remaining Romans in the city by the sea, he also showed compassion for the beaten Roman woman and seemed somewhat troubled by Tiberius' treatment of Kore.

I do agree that Spartacus has generally been portrayed as heroic, although the remaining rebels with the possible exception of Agron, Nasir and Gannicus, have all definitely indulged in much of the same behaviour as their former masters/owners. It does seem to be less obviously "hero vs. villain" this season, especially when compared to Batiatus and Glaber.

I think she was one of those slaves he had sex with before an the other one was killed by Tiberius' men.

But, the trade happened anyway due to Kore taking Tiberius' place.

This is only after the fact.

Though Spartacus wouldn't have known it (unless Kore told him), Crassus was willing to risk his son's life with Decimation, so beyond the trade offered in this episode (500 survivors from Crixus' troops) Crassus would not have let Tiberius be used as too big a bargaining chip.

The moment he remotely threatened Crassus' chances of victory he'd have told Spartacus to do what he wanted with him.

And fitting the little s##t died from being stabbed in the back.

Seeing as Spartacus and his runaway slaves are facing annihilation he has no choice but utilize whatever chips he may have no matter how slim, and Tibby was a big chip. Hell, he could have even used Kore as a potential hostage. To kill him off as if he were just another roman soldier is the height of idiocy. Caesar should also have been killed!

Tiberius wasn't a bargaining chip worth anything substantial. Crassus wouldnt give up honor and duty for his son. And even if he had, the Senate would gladly sacrifice Tiberius for Spartacus' cold dead corpse. The Senate would have continued to send army after army after him regardless of whatever bargain Spartacus struck with Crassus for Tiberius. Considering Pompeii was just itching to claim the glory of killing Spartacus he would have immediately pursued Spartacus if Crassus backed off. Tiberius was next to useless. The Senate doesn't care about him, Pompeii doesn't care about him, and Crassus would only trade a bunch of half dead slaves for him.

I just caught up on the last 2 episodes gotta say I got a little chocked up with the whole Crixus stuff, gonna miss the big guy ... shame his girl is sticking around!

Why is Naevia so disliked? I've never really had a problem with her, and I liked her character arc from timid house-slave to killer warrior woman. Sure she disagreed with Spartacus, but Crixus did that far more often and he doesn't seem to be disliked quite as much.

Maybe she's just annoying and I don't see it. I'm sure characters like Andrea and Lori from The Walking Dead, or Skyler in Breaking Bad have their fans, but I can't stand those three.

I for one would have liked to see how the original actress would have done. Perhaps she would have been more tolerable.

the show is ending so she wont be around much longer

Why is Naevia so disliked?

Personally, there are two main reasons. First, the recasting of the character made it very difficult to feel anything for Naevia during season 2, especially when the slaves were risking their lives rescuing her from the mines, etc. I found it hard to believe Crixus' desire to see Naevia again when all he found was someone who looked nothing like Naevia and, because of the obvious trauma of her experiences since being thrown out of the House of Batiatus, also acted nothing like Naevia.

Secondly, while I understood Naevia's anger against all Romans, her continual manipulation of Crixus to drive a wedge between him and Spartacus in season 3 was frustrating. Spartacus and Crixus had finally reached an understanding, yet Naevia felt compelled to encourage Crixus to engage in conduct which she knew Spartacus would disagree with and which she knew would cause division within the slave army.

In each instance, maybe Naevia simply needed a little more character development to help make her actions more understandable.

The whole point was to get those remaining 500 soldiers. It's not like they could use Tiberius to ensure Crassus wouldn't follow them or something. And they still have to deal with Pompey.

For some people it's the actress. I have no problems with her. For me, she and Crixus were just acting really dumb and annoying this season. It's why his death didn't illicit any emotions for me. Though, that funeral for him and the others made me a sad a little bit.

For me its because she is a troublesome mouthy caustic annoying woman.

this. Given the number of episodes they had to bring her from innocent housegirl, to where she is now, they've done well.

But I agree, a little more development of her character.

I also don't like the new actress as much as the original... though sometimes she is quite good. But the first Naevia actress was far more consistent IMO

show's moving along well. I like Crixus' death, but I thought the episode itself was very rushed. I mean they fought across half of Italy within about 10 seconds. But otherwise good

Where is Lucullus? Pompey is coming in from the north and west, Crassus is coming in from the South... where is Lucullus?

^^^^

Awesome article. All very good points. It is amusing to recall the negativity about the CGI backgrounds, stylised and extreme violence, coarse language, graphic nudity and sex scenes in the first few episodes. The show has come so very far since then, but still retained all those elements!

All I did at the end of the this...

Everything and then to see Andy at the end...so much emotion.

Man this sucks. I love this show and will really miss it. Loved that some were given a good farewell and that some actually made it out alive (where would they go though) it was really a very good episode. I also liked that the whole Tiberius situation came to the light and I'm not a bit surprised how that played out in the end I actually would have been pleasantly surprised if it she had lived.

SPOILERS FOLLOW

Brilliant.

I was wondering if they'd show Andy Whitfield at the end and they really couldn't have picked a more fitting image/clip to use there.

All in all a fantastic send off to a great show, so many highlights. Spartacus running over the hill toward Marcus and his men is definitely up there. I liked Gannicus' send off too, seeing his old friend, although I was fully expecting Gannicus to make it out alive. In fact, I was expecting more to make it than did. Was nice to Agron and Nasir get away, their love story was one of the better ones during the shows run.

Also, Lugo went out like a bad ass.

Beautiful. Epic. Sad. Happy. All the emotions this brought me.

STARZ will be stupid if they don't pounce on doing a C/P/C spin-off though I think they wont think about doing it.

i loved how they ended it with andy

Yeah, me too. Especially considering the fact that I never really liked the end credits of the episodes ending with a a static image of McIntyre screaming at me against a black background. And it's nothing against him personally, 'cause he had been great in the role, it just always seemed hokey to me. But seeing Whitfield at the end was a nice tribute.
