McFarlane recently completed the script, and his new take honestly doesn't sound that good. It seems like there's an emphasis on cheapness, making this movie for as little as possible..

and McFarlane is supposed to direct.

I don't like the sound of this, low budget, and an inexperienced director doesn't sound like a recipe for success.

This movie needs a real visual director and a big budget to truly work. It's a great storyline completely deserving of the big screen treatment agan.

What are you on about?

Malebolgia aged pretty badly.

The one following Sam and Twitch (right?) with Spawn basically being a secondary character in his own movie? Or did he switch it up again?

Eh, yeah, this was supposed to be "officially happening now" so many times in the last 15 years I lost count.

He's been promising his low budget Spawn since 1998.

EXACTLY. At this point I'm willing to fund the thing so I don't have to keep hearing rumors about it.

Give it up Todd. No one wants to see another Spawn.

It's not happening any time soon. Todd comes out with BS on a regular basis to keep some movement alive.

Yep. Every year he says the new movie is happening soon. Same with a new Spawn animated series. Dude needs to just admit they aren't happening. And if they do eventually, good for him. Hope they don't suck.

I don't want to see the take he wants to do anyway. I would prefer a big budget movie that could even be R rated now after Deadpool's success. Just make it good this time.

Id say have James Wan of Saw fame as director with Mcfarlane and Clive Barker as producers.

John Goodman should play Burke and have Billy Cincaid the child killer and Tony Twist as the baddies here plus since Deadpool earned big money and an r-rating, maybe have this movie as a gory r-rated horror film than superhero movie.

Guillermo Del Toro would be a great director choice for this. The guy needs a hit and this could be it if it is done right.

Didn't McFarlane at one point say he met, spoke with or Jamie Foxx was in consideration of playing Al Simmons/Spawn?

I watched the original the other day. The effects don't hold up almost 20 years later and John Leguizamo's Clown was the thing that kills the movie. Sure, some of the antics are entertaining, but after awhile it gets old fast. If Clown is ever done again, I feel he needs to be CGI and be a mix of funny but sinister like in the comics. A lot of dark humor if they must.

I think with the advancements of technology too, Spawn could and deserves a proper retelling of the origin story and reintroduction to the masses. I'd rather they go that route than some cops chasing a Boogeyman horror story.

I don't think they should make Clown an all-cgi character, just give him a design that works better in live action, but isn't too far from what the comics intented.

Not interested in seeing Spawn if Simmons is just going to be a background character...

I know what you mean, but if it's a good movie I'm all for it. Just want to see spawn get a chance

Yeah, I don't see the point in making a Spawn movie if Spawn is just in the background. Admittedly, I haven't read that many of his comics but the ones I have read, he was front and center. He isn't like the Man-Thing or something.

I rewatched the 1990s film recently. I remember really digging it when I saw it in the theater, but it certainly has aged poorly, especially the scenes in Hell and the ones involving the Violator. Such bad CGI, though at the time I guess it was cutting edge. The cape also looks really lame now. But it was a product of its time.

I actually thought Clown was okay; the character is meant to ham it up, and Leguizamo did his best with it. I really hated Martin Sheen's performance though. I feel like there are some actors (Treat Williams in The Phantom and Tommy Lee Jones in Batman Forever are other examples of this) who can't wrap their head around the fact that you don't have to act like a human cartoon just because you're in a superhero movie. Yes, the story is outlandish and the characters are fantastical. But if they are still taking place in something that more or less resembles the real world, then you don't have to act so over-the-top ridiculous that it takes the audience out of the movie. Sheen wasn't as bad as the other two examples, but he was still pretty terrible.

I see what they're trying to do though, could make for a unique superhero film. If they ever go with a multi-film storyline with the Angels and all that, they won't be able to use Angela, right? As she's in Marvel right now.

Yeah Angela has left the Image building, she wouldn't be showing up.

to those that don't like Spawn... come on!!!!!

also, the criticism against Leguizamo's Clown is crazy to me, he was the best part of the movie

My pick for a re-cast Spawn definitely would be either Idris Elba or Jamie Foxx...actually Jamie Foxx I can definitely see him as Al Simmons/Spawn especially after his performance in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as Electro...he stole the show in that movie so for him to be in another superhero movie but this time as the hero as the lead it would be a much better role for him

I feel like we've been hearing about this reboot for like almost 20 years.

Now back in the 1990s, I was obsessed with Spawn like quite a few people were. But I mean, hasn't the Spawn era kind of ended? The character and the comic doesn't have the popularity it did back in the day. The movie being a lame duck sort of ended that. Now at the same, I was pretty excited by seeing the film become a movie, but it was just way too cheesy with way too many pointless visual effects.

I did like Leguizamo's clown, but things like the cheerleader scene, the balloon thing, all just rather poorly executed.

I'm not against a cinematic reboot because I do like the character the basic plot and visual design. But I feel like this is the state the film's been in for like a long time and it can't get it off the ground.

Now that aside, I still think the HBO series was awesome and pretty ahead of its time. It's just too bad it ended the way it did and we never really got a definitive ending.
