Exclusive: Todd McFarlane provides major Spawn movie update in the latest episode of Geeking Out:

What's happening with the much-discussed, long-in-development movie reboot of Spawn? Geek culture icon Kevin Smith got some information out of the character's creator, Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane, about the project on an upcoming episode of Geeking Out, and AMC has provided ComicBook.com with an exclusive first look at that conversation.

In the clip from Geeking Out, seen above, DC All Access and CW Fan Talk presenter Tiffany Smith talks with McFarlane about the plans for a movie reboot.

"The simple answer is yes," McFarlane told Smith when she asked about the possibility of another Spawn movie, assuring her that it won't be a continuation of the 1997 film starring Michael Jai White and John Leguizamo. Rather, it will be "a dark, R-rated, scary, badass sort of script."

He told her that "the world's going to be real, except for one thing that's going to move," and that "you're never going to see a dude in a rubber suit....This is going to be my Jaws shark," and then showed her some concept art.

That all gels with what McFarlane told ComicBook.com back in February.

"In the background, there’s this thing moving around, this boogeyman. That boogeyman just happens to be something that you and I, intellectually, know is Spawn," he explained. "Will he look like he did in the first movie? No. Will he have a supervillain he fights? No. He’s going to be the spectre, the ghost."

Also given that Todd McFarlane has had a completed script since earlier this year, we might be closer than ever to hearing some major announcements as far as the film is concerned.

"I've finished the script, and I'm in the process of editing," McFarlane said. "It's 183 pages, and [producers] usually like 120. I still think it's going to end up being about 140, because I'm putting in details for myself."

And I thought the Gambit movie was in development hell....

I like Spawn but this sounds like Fant4stic level disaster.

It seems to me, based on everything I've read, that this entity will almost be Spawn in name only. Why make a Spawn movie if it isn't Spawn?

I'm looking forward to the reboot. Hope it happens. Also, didn't really know where to share this, but I cut a modern trailer together for the 1997 Spawn movie :) I figure this would be the best thread to post it in.

Agreed. Spawn in name only. I want faithful adaption. Comic is great.

We've been hearing about this reboot for 20 years. Why is it a news story again?

Totally agree with both of you, give us a reboot that is faithful to the comics, not this crap he has been talking about for 20 years.

Yeah I like Todd Farlane but he's gonna George Lucas Episode 1 this...

This reboot is never happening anyway, so why worry about it?

Oh, I'm sure the very second McFarlane says he gives up and the rights go on sale, someone will snap them up. Despite the film, which is certainly long forgotten, it's a lucrative property based on the toys alone.

Meh! I still kinda like Spawn, I want a faithful adaptation, not this Aronofsky Year One sounding crap.

Same - the comics are rife with rich imagery that would look fantastic on the big screen.

Zack Synder might actually give this great visual flare, if he worked closely with McFarlane.

That's actually a good pick. He is clearly more comfortable with darker material and R rated fare anyway. I'd be fine with that, and I think him attaching himself to this would actually get the movie greenlit.

Yeah, I like Snyder myself but don't think the PG-13 movies suit him. Him directing a dark r rated Spawn could be awesome stuff.

He also loves to include religion and try to make it deep, so I guess on these fronts he is suitable to direct a movie based on this franchise.

Todd's been talking about this since like 2002. And once a year, he'll mention the script being 'done'. It's like..an annual tradition.

It can happen, but I can see Netflix putting out the money..

I think at this point Todd will actually have to die for this to be made.
