Variety reports that Spider-Man 3 will open first worldwide in Japan, on May 1, Sony Pictures International Japan has announced. It will also get its world premiere in Tokyo.

The premieere will be held at the Toho Cinemas Roppongi Hills in central Tokyo on April 16, with director Sam Raimi, Stan Lee and stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco in attendance.

Sony had long scheduled a May opening for Spider-Man 3 but only recently decided on the May 1 date, three days ahead of its US release. The exact number of screens has yet to be decided but will be north of 400.

The distributor aims to beat the record of its big 2006 May release, The Da Vinci Code, which finished with Y9.05 billion ($77.4 million). Spider-Man 2, which opened in July 2004, grossed Y6.7 billion ($57.3 million) and Spider-Man, which bowed in May of 2002, ended with Y7.5 billion ($64.1 million).

This movie will be bootlegged to **** by the time it hits the U.S.

Muahahahahahaha! I knew about this about a month ahead of time. I flaunted it before, and I am now! AHAHAHA! :D :p

If you noticed in the spiderman pictures forum I posted a pic of the Spiderman Japan poster that says 5-1

I'm gonna try to make the April 16th premiere. If I'm unable to, well, there's always May 1st :D

Thats cool. Here in Greece we get it on May 3rd. Cant wait!

Well with the premeire on April 16th that means that by the middle of this month they should be done, if they are not done all ready with the film. To print thousands of copies around the world, and to ship them so forth. So to me that means the film is probably done.

Ha, its going to be on peekvid before the US even gets it...

This is gonna benefit us U.S. fans.

In France it will be the May 2d !!! I'm really excited to see it !
Spidey POWAAAAA !!!!!

Raimi...what is up with this? The only thing I can think of is trying to hit it big in other countries because they know here in the U.S....they will make some big bucks.

They are very lucky, although the only thing I worry about is the fact that with the Premier being April 16 I am going to have to avoid almost all movie publications. No way I am having this film spoiled for me completly come May 3rd.

Damn it! You beat me to it! When I read the article on the main page that was the first thing to pop into my head!

Okay, if they really want to cut on bootleg copies, why do they have Japan have it three days before???

If Sony's not worried about bootlegs, why should you?

You know, it's going to move to May 2nd for the US, too. Sony is not that stupid to open it on a Friday. They're just announcing this (and the world premiere in Japan) to help boost the international markets so they can make $1B+... since they know they got the America secured, they need to focus on the other international markets.

Either way, I'm pretty sure it'll open May 2nd, Wednesday instead of Friday, they just haven't announced yet (and still have 2 months to do so).

They're lucky, but I think I can survive waiting 3 more days to see it! doesn't make a differents to me.

^ We ALL get to see it 3 days later, I think we'll survive!

I for one already have a theater (biggest one in tiny Denmark) that will most likely put on a
SPIDER-MAN MARATHON, including a midnight viewing of Spidey 3 of course! that will be on the 3'rd of May, so for Me at least, I get to see it on the 3'rd... Of course it'll lead into the 4'th as we pass midnight, but you get the point.
