Spider-man: The Series Pilot Episode

EXT. FOREST HILLS- NIGHT- NIGHT RAINING
EXT. LONELLO FAMILY HOME
The Lonello family home was as small as the Parker’s, and built in a very similar design scheme. Peter walks up to the door and presses the doorbell, the door is answer by Jason.
JASON
Oh… hey Pete.
PETER
Hey, I know this might sound kind of weird- and.
JASON
Let me guess you want to know if you can stow away here while your aunt and uncle cool down.
PETER
Something, like that.
JASON
Sure, no problemo- my parents are out of town for the weekend; so, no one to call in Peteo.
PETER
Thanks…
JASON
No problem, we’re friends Pete… don’t ever feel afraid of asking for anything…
PETER
So how’d you know about my aunt and uncle?
JASON
You’re kidding right? We’ve been friends since elementary school man, you think I wouldn’t know you by now.
INT. LONELLO FAMILY HOME- KITCHEN
Peter sits at the kitchen table, while Jason gets a beer out of the refrigerator.
JASON
I’m going to get a beer, want one?
PETER
Yeah, sure.
Jason nods as he takes out 2 cans of beer.
JASON
So what was it this time? Experiment set fire to the house?
PETER
I was just afraid to tell them the truth.
JASON
That’s all?
PETER
It’s a little more complicated than that.
JASON
Come on, it can’t be that bad.
Jason tosses Pete his beer and sits down at the opposite end of the table.
PETER
Leave it alone.
JASON
Well, if I were you Pete- I would just tell them the truth… nothing can be that bad, nothing… I was thinking about pulling a party together tonight- you in?
PETER
Who’s coming?
JASON
Just the team, and girls- obviously. Who knows it might just be brainy Pete’s lucky night.
PETER
Yeah sure, count me in.
JASON
Alright…
Jason stands up and gives Pete the high five…
JASON
I just got to make some quick phone calls.
INT. LONELLO FAMILY HOME- LIVING ROOM
Teenagers 15 and over were in the house partying and swaying to the music. Peter was leaning against the sofa drinking a beer when Jason approaches him standing beside an attractive blonde. Her name is LIZ ALLEN.
JASON
Hey Pete, remember Liz? Of course you do.
LIZ
So this is the infamous Peter Parker who knocked Flash into a windshield, with just a single shove.
Peter blushes, taken in under Liz’s spell.
PETER
That’s me
Jason looks behind him to see KONG, an overweight 18 year old, drinking down a whole keg of beer.
JASON
I’ll be right back before this party gets out of hand.
LIZ
So, Jason told me you ran away from home- that true?
PETER
Yeah.
LIZ
Why? What happened?
JUMP CUT:
INT. PARKER FAMILY HOME- LIVING ROOM
Uncle Ben and Aunt May play a game of cards, the sound of a door can be heard swinging in the wind from the back of the house.
BEN
Peter?
There wasn’t a reply, just an uneasy silence. May looked towards Ben afraid and in his eyes could be seen his fear as well, he stands up…
BEN
Peter is that you?
Still there was no answer. CLANG!!! The sound of pots crashing to the kitchen floor!
BEN
Perhaps a squirrel has gotten in May.
MAY
I’ve never heard of that happening in Queens before.
Ben and May begin to walk towards the entrance of the living room and May turns her head towards the right to see the shadow of a man standing in the entrance to the kitchen. He was carrying a gun and he too was caught off guard. It was Dante.
DANTE
Where’s the money.
BEN
We don’t have any.
The Dante TIMIDLY AIMS his gun towards Ben…
DANTE
Where is it!
BEN
Hey, you’re probably better off then we are, we hardly even have a dime.
Dante’s finger presses the trigger, the bullet shoots out of the gun and hits Ben. Ben falls to the ground dead, tears begin to roll down May’s cheek as she kneels down over his body crying. Dante’s eyes dart back and forth AFRAID. He runs off as fast as he could.
INT. LONELLO FAMILY HOME- LIVING ROOM
All of a sudden sirens could be heard speeding through the neighborhood, everyone hurries outside.
EXT. LONELLO FAMILY HOME
Peter was the first one to see what was going on… cops cars swarmed around his house. Peter looks back towards Jason. And then he begins to run towards his house. Liz looks towards Jason.
LIZ
Where is he going?
EXT. PARKER FAMILY HOME- NIGHT- RAINING- THUNDER
Outside of the Parker family home were police cars and an ambulance… Peter arrives on the scene and his jaw drops in fright.
PETER
Oh no…
INT. PARKER FAMILY HOME- LIVING ROOM
May looks towards Peter, she could see the tears in his eyes…
MAY
What are we going to do?
COP
The police will find your husband’s killer mam, I assure you.
Peter looks to his right and can see two cops conversing.
COP2
They just sighted the burglar over at the old abandoned Acme Warehouse at the waterfront, we’re sending men over now to clear the area.
Peter takes off running…
MAY
Oh dear…
COP
Don’t worry mam’ kids take these things the hardest, he’s just got to find a way to let it out.

EXT. OLD ABANDONED ACME WAREHOUSE- NIGHT
Cops were parked outside of the warehouse.
INT. OLD ABANDONED ACME WAREHOUSE- NIGHT
Dante paces the warehouse trying to contrive of a way out. A shadow of a man LEAPS across the ceiling and drops to the ground. Dante turns around to come face to face with Peter. Peter couldn’t see his face, due to the darkness in the warehouse, all he knew was that this man killed Uncle Ben.
PETER
There is no where on Earth where you are safe, not from me.
Peter punches Dante sending him crashing through stacked tires from the three convertible cars that were parked on the right. Peter jumps over towards where Dante landed and lands perfectly in a crouching position, he grabs Dante’s head and knocks it back towards the floor.
DANTE
Don’t hurt me… please don’t hurt me.
PETER
You killed my Uncle…
Peter stands up and grabs Dante by his feet and spins him around in circles in mid air and then flings him against the back wall.
DANTE
God save me…
PETER
And you’re not going to kill anyone else!
Dante begins to crawl over to a column on the right wall to help him gain his balance.
PETER
You can’t run away, you can’t hide.
Peter walks over towards a convertible and lifts it over his head and begins to walk towards Dante… a lightning bolt thunders in the sky above illuminating Dante’s face… Peter stands still, realizing. Dante, afraid, takes out his gun and taking his chance… he aims the gun towards Peter, Peter kicks the gun out of his hands while maintaining balance with the convertible…
BEN (V.O.)
Peter, with great power, comes great responsibility…
Peter throws the car crashing through the pillar and hitting the wall behind it. The convertible was now hovering above the unharmed Dante’s head. Peter webs Dante to the ceiling for the cops to arrest and take to jail, he couldn’t kill him. Not because he didn’t want to, but because of the greater morals his uncle had set for him. Peter walks away from Dante and exits through the back. The cops kick the front door open and storm in to find Dante hanging from the ceiling.
INT. BROKEN DOWN WAREHOUSE- GARAGE- RAINING
Bock walks through the empty warehouse, the same song playing in the background… this time carrying a more eerie beat to it, and less stylistic. Bock sees Jimmy looking towards him grinning.
JIMMY
So, you have my money?
Bock nods his head no.
JIMMY
I told you what would happen if you didn’t have my money. You’re a dead man Bock.
Jimmy’s about to take out his gun… but, BANG! Jimmy looks towards Bock, eyes wide open, blood spurting out of his chest, he falls to the ground. Bock was holding the smoking gun. Bock puts it back into his pocket and walks over towards a silver briefcase, opens it and looks in to find money. He takes it and begins to walk away.
EXT. BROKEN DOWN WAREHOUSE- NIGHT- RAINING
Bock stood in the rain and he waves his hand out.
BOCK
Taxi.
A taxi pulls over and Bock gets in, the Taxi drives off.
INT. OSCORP- BASEMENT
There was a slanted elevator that led to the bottom floor. No one besides top maintenance personal knew about it. There are two floors, the very bottom floor which the elevator left off at and then the semi-floor above that which circumnavigated the whole perimeter, this is where the machines could be located. The room is lined with blue and has green pulses of light emitting from the many machines. The bottom floor is mainly used for experiment conducting and human testing, and other things of that nature. The kind of thing that shouldn’t be taking place in an urban area, but rules are made to be broken. Norman, wears a green tie, and J. JONAH JAMESON, editor and chief over at the Daily Bugle get off of the elevator.
NORMAN
Welcome to the “real” Oscorp, Mr. Jameson, something that hardly anyone ever gets to see.
JAMESON
I’m honored.
Norman and Jameson begin to walk through the room and towards a back door.
NORMAN
As my mentor once told me, we are only as strong as our weakest links… I have a feeling that I will need you in the future. Who knows, this might even be the start of a beautiful friendship.
JAMESON
Oscorp and the Daily Bugle? Stomping out over written news and…
NORMAN
Unleashing the newest information to date, yet keep in mind that production is far from complete… three years tops. Prototypes are in development right now. I am one of your foremost supports Jonah, never forget that…
Norman opens a door and he and Jameson enter out onto…
INT. OSCORP- BASEMENT- SUPPLY LINE
A balcony looking down into a room which was filled with supply line making dozens, upon dozens of NEWS HUNTERS. Oscorp employees working on the ground below.
JONAH
My god.
NORMAN
Not god… me…
INT. MID TOWN HIGH SCHOOL- GYM- BASKETBALL COURT
The fund raiser was held on Sunday afternoon, the basketball court was empty except for the banner that ran across the top reading MID TOWN HIGH SCHOOL FUND RAISER, and the three desks, two in the middle at opposite ends and one in the far back- centered. At the desks were people who gathered the donations from people who dropped by… there was also a small sign that was positioned with a picture of Uncle Ben, to honor his memory. In the back was Peter and Gwen.
GWEN
Hey Pete, I’m sorry about your uncle.
PETER
I miss him… I don’t know if I can go on- life has been so different without him, it’s not the same anymore.
Tears begin to form in Peter’s eyes. Gwen holds onto Peter’s hand giving him the support that he needed. Gwen and Peter look into each other’s eyes…
GWEN
He was a good man Peter, he was a good friend.
Peter nods his head in agreement and then, out of no where. Perhaps from the pain and suffering their true feelings were finally expressed, but it happened. For the first time Peter and Gwen embraced and then they kissed. It was the beginning of a brand new life.

INT. CEMETERY- RAINING MORNING
“Stop Crying your heart out” by Oasis plays. It was the first day in the life of Spider-Man… people were sitting down, in the rain, looking towards an open casket… the open casket was his fault, his doing. The worst part about being guilty was that no one can ever know. Peter was sitting next to Aunt May as the priest begins the funeral… ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Gwen was sitting in the back row with her family, and the Lonellos were behind the Parkers. Only one person didn’t show, the one person Peter had come to know as a friend… Harry Osborn. The priest looks towards Peter. And Peter nods his head and begins to walk towards the microphone-
PETER
My Uncle told me that we were all put on this Earth for a reason. I never really got to know my parents, Uncle Ben taught me everything I know. He had attempted to instill in me a system of beliefs that I had forgotten. In this world one small man can make the most profound of changes. With Great Power there must always come great responsibility. That is something I forgot. He was a hero, stood up for what he believed in and fought for truth and justice. He was just one man, but at the same time he was so much more… he was a mentor, a teacher… a friend. He had always told me that I was meant for great things, and I… I let him down.
(he looks towards Aunt May)
But I will not fail him again.
(he looks away, forcing his eyes closed)
It was my fault. If only I had listened, he would still be alive.
(he looks up towards the sky)
We will all miss him.
PETER (V.O.)
I will make it up to you, I will dedicate myself to your cause… I will save others, I will make this city a better place.
JUMP CUT:
Peter and the other Parker men carry the casket.
PETER (V.O.)
I will not stand by, and have your life mean nothing.
JUMP CUT:
Uncle Ben’s casket is lowered into the ground.
PETER (V.O.)
You saved me from myself.
EXT. NEW YORK CITY STREETS- AFTERNOON- SUNNY
A mugger holds up a family with a gun.
MUGGER
Give me your money and jewelry and no one will get hurt.
The mother refuses and the mugger grabs her by her arm… and presses the gun against her head.
MUGGER
I am not playing any games… now!!!
For the first time, a streak of red and blue jumps out of the sky and towards the ground below.
PETER (V.O.)
Maybe I couldn’t do something as Peter Parker.
Spider-Man, in his classic red and blue costume finally stands tall and proud, he looks towards the mugger, who was running away. Spider-Man sends out a web and catches the mugger in his tracks and attaches him to the top of the building, having him hang upside down.
PETER (V.O.)
But I can do something as Spider-Man.
Spider-Man looks towards the family, and then towards the small 7 year old boy with big round glasses, and the second last sweater vest in the world…
SPIDER-MAN
Are you ok?
The boy shakes his head yes. And then Spider-Man looks up towards the parents.
MOTHER
Who are you?
SPIDER-MAN
Just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Spider-Man begins to walk away, but not before we catch the sight of the mugger hanging from the webbing… and attached to the web was a business card… YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN.
EXT. ROOFTOPS- NIGHT- RAINING
Thunder rumbles in the background and rain fell from the night sky above, crashing down upon his head… Spider-Man kneeled on the edge of the narrow rooftop looking down towards the city below.
PETER (V.O.)
It was my fault. I’m sorry Uncle Ben.
Spider-Man turns towards the camera, ICONIC IMAGE.
PETER (V.O.)
But, I will make it up to you.

To be continued. I always hate it when that happens. But, next time we have a lot more characters to introduce. The Daily Bugle, a furious reporter, a new friend, and an investigative reporter who goes by the name Urich. Throughout the pages to come I will hopefully shed some light on how this project came into existence. Where it all began and what might be in the episodes to come. So, as DVD’s have established this part to be known as- welcome to the Special Features.

CREATION:

It all started out with a story written on the final issue of Amazing Fantasy. Issue number 15.

“
I told Martin I wanted to feature a hero who had just a touch of super strength but his main power was that he could stick to walls and ceilings. I confessed that I had gotten the idea from watching a fly on the wall while I had been typing., I also mentioned that our hero, whom I wanted to call Spider-Man, would be a teenager, with all the problems, hang-ups, and angst of any teenager. He’d be an orphan who lived with his Aunt and Uncle, a bit of a nerd, a loser in the romance department, and who constantly worried about the fact that his family had barely enough money to live on. Except for his super-power he’d be the quintessential hard-luck kid. He’d have allergy attacks when fighting the villains, he’d be plagued by ingrown toenails, acne, hay fever, and anything else that I could dream up.

I waited for Martin’s enthusiastic reaction… good thing I didn’t hold my breath. Martin hated it. He took great pains to tell me that a hero cannot be a teenager; teenagers can only be sidekicks. Also, everyone knows a hero doesn’t have a lot of personal problems. He informed me that I was describing a comedy character, not a hero. Heroes are too busy fighting evil to slow down the stories with personal stuff. Finally, the name Spider-Man was a disaster. Didn’t I realize that people hate Spiders? Martin tsk-tsk’ed a few times and went back to his Scrabble game.

Well, despite the less than exuberant reaction, I couldn’t get Spider-Man out of my mind. That’s when I remembered the final issue of Amazing Fantasy, which we were then prepping. As you can imagine, when a publisher prints the last issue of a title, knowing the book is about to be discontinued, no one much cares about what goes into that last issue. So I just had to get it out of my system…

Several months later… Martin came rushing in to see me and, not unexpectedly, congratulated both himself and me on this fantastic new character that he was so glad that we had developed. I can still hear his now-classic comment, “Stan, remember that Spider-Man idea of yours that I liked so much? Why don’t we turn it into a series?
“

And thus Spider-Man started. Generating fans over the years. Several branching off comics and games, even it’s very own cartoon series and live action television show! The show didn’t last long, it centered around Peter as a middle-aged photographer at the Bugle. “Peter discovers his powers just fine, but then decides out of the blue to fight crime. Uncle Ben does not die so that Spider-Man might live. No great power-requiring-great-responsibility jive here. ‘Responsibility’ was not the watchword of the ‘70s… the episodes weren’t very good. Going into detail isn’t necessary… The bottom line: No lizards, no Doc Ocks, no Kingpins, and no reason to watch.” (COURTESY OF MARVEL ENCYCLOPEDIA: SPIDER-MAN)But, in 2002 Spider-Man finally came to the big screen, this time with Uncle Ben’s sacrifice, the all so famous motto, and the Spider-Man that had produced millions of fans over the years.

AmazingFantasy15a.JPG

This scene was originally built around the idea that we would see the Green Goblin in the following episode, but that was all changed as I quickly drew myself away from ULTIMATE and began to follow my our journey to discovering the character, one thing however does stay constant with this series and this opening- the Green Goblin costume is not a mechanical piece of hardwire, but is instead the Alex Ross version of the character (minus the sword) because I personally loved that design and found it be creepy, yet maintain the original essence of the costume. So, hopefully, if I’m able to get this series to air we will see this Goblin concept on screen, the small screen:

EXT. NEW YORK CITY- ROOFTOPS- NIGHT- RAINING

Rain was pouring down upon the rooftops below, a shadow could be seen running forward through the rain… the camera angles up and we see SPIDER-MAN, running forward in his red and blue costume… in front of him was a the figure of a man wearing a dark wet green cape and tight green stockings that were crudely stitched together on the sides. The figure in front jumps into the air and grabs hold of the opposite roof, looking back towards weary opponent he continues running away.

SPIDER-MAN (V.O.)
Life is full of mystery, of changes, of love and of death. Sometimes it is hard distinguishing what you were meant to be. Some find out early in their lives, others find out the hard way… I’d like to tell you that I found my destiny the easy way, but if I did- I wouldn’t ever be where I am right now… running over alleyways chasing a man that I used to look up to and admire… when I was bitten by a radioactive spider I was given both a gift and a curse for with Great Power comes Great Responsibility… I wish I only knew that earlier- Uncle Ben.

Spider-Man finally reaches the end of the rooftop and hurls himself forward towards a gargoyle like figure looming above the city, on the same rooftop, he looks up towards the sky…

Here is one of the earliest versions of the teleplay. Many of the scenes have changed. But, when I went back to the drawing board I was lucky enough to be able to work in everything I wanted in there in the first place such as Harry's encounter with Ben in the hospital as well as the dream sequence.

Here is the link:

Alternate (early) version

Zev played a major role in the development of this episode, Hostage and Swarm. Some of the scenes he created didn't fit the overall theme that I was going for and thus unfortunately were left on the cutting room floor. These are those scenes:

Peter walks away, smiling that MJ had actually paid attention to him. He turns around. Flash and MJ are having a minor argument.

HARRY
(O.S.)
Trouble in paradise?

Peter looks up to see HARRY OSBORN (yacht club pretty boy) behind him. Peter holds up his crossed fingers, then looks back at Flash and MJ. They’re now in the middle of a liplock. Harry winces.

HARRY
Denied!

Peter turns to look at Harry, angry.

PETER
You know, I didn’t quite catch your name…

HARRY
Harry, Harry Osborn…

PETER
Of the New York Osborns!?

HARRY
Well, I’m not in Pittsburgh, am I?

PETER
Holy… I know your father! Well, not know him, but I met him once at a science expo and… geez! He’s like my hero! You look just like him.

HARRY
It’s the hair, isn’t it? Listen, I hear you’re the brainy one of this little subculture.

PETER
I’m not going to do your homework. If you want to beat me up, try not to hit me in the face. I bruise easily and my aunt worries.

HARRY
No, that’s not it… I want you to help me raise my grades…

PETER
The son of Norman Osborn needs my help at school?

HARRY
Yeah, I guess genius skips a generation

PETER
Why should you be sorry? For all you know, he’s skiing in Aspen. What makes you think he’s dead?

HARRY
Just… if my father taught me one thing, it’s never to
Into a situation without knowing all the specifics.

PETER
You mean having dirt on people?

HARRY
Yeah, guess so. I know it’s none of my business, but…

PETER
You’re right, it is none of your business.

He finishes writing on the chalkboard. He tries to stay angry, but the prospect of dishing out what he’s been working on is too strong.

PETER
An advanced polymer he was working on before he… died. It’s supposed to solidify on contact with air, but… There’s only so far you can go working out of your basement. I’ve been lucky so far. Cracking the compression module… thought everything would be easy street after that.

HARRY
Maybe my dad could help. I should introduce you two… he’s always happy to add another genius to the stable.

PETER
I don’t think my aunt and uncle would approve.

HARRY
The Osborn reputation strikes again. The economy’s in recession, he does what he has to do to stay afloat. And his discoveries benefit millions.

PETER
I thought you hated him.

HARRY
Hated him? No. He’s still my father. You’re not supposed to hate your father, are you?

PETER
Guess not.

HARRY
So, what’s minted about the MJ affair?

PETER
I thought we were going to work on homework.

INT. MIDTOWN HIGH SCHOOL – HALLWAYS - DAY

Peter walks through the school. He suddenly sees Flash and his cronies roughing up a freshman. He turns away and walks, muttering to himself.

PETER
Don’t do it, Parker, it’s none of your business, Parker… Aw hell, you only live once.

CUT BACK to Flash and the freshman.

FLASH
Listen, you have that weed ready to go by five or…

Peter suddenly jumps on his back.

FLASH
Hey, get off!

PETER
Leave him alone!

FLASH
Little psycho!

He jerks his head back, catching Peter in the nose. Peter falls off him, blood streaming from his nostrils. His glasses fall to the ground.

FLASH
You want a fight, is that it?

Flash shoves Peter against the lockers.

FLASH
C’mon, put ‘em up!

Peter hesitantly raises his dukes.

FLASH
C’mon, c’mon, man, hit me!

Peter doesn’t. Flash clocks him one, knocking Peter down and out.

INT. NURSE’S OFFICE – DAY

Peter holds a bag of ice to his face. The NURSE looks him over.

NURSE
Well, you don’t look too banged up. It was a good thing you decided to play possum.

He sits down next to GWEN STACY, a plain girl-next-door type who happens to be Peter’s girl next door.

PETER
(imitating Flash)
“I think you mean ‘no sir’.” Who does that baboon think he is?

GWEN
He thinks he’s the BMOC. And he happens to be right.

PETER
What, so I’m not supposed to stand up for myself?

GWEN
Not to Flash Thompson.

She pulls his glasses out of her purse.

GWEN
Here, Mary-Jane told me to give these to you.

PETER
My glasses! You found them! I thought we were going to have to buy a new pair… wait, did you say Mary-Jane?

GWEN
Here we go… Honestly, what is it about her?

PETER
She’s… she’s… Mary-Jane.

GWEN
Yeah, she is.

INT. MID TOWN HIGH SCHOOL - BASKETBALL COURT - DAY

A game’s in progress, Midtown Cougars vs. the Empire Lions. Harry has a court side seat. BRAD RIDELY, senior, sits down next to him.

BRAD
Well, well, well. Look who should join me in my exile from the golden towers of academia.

Harry is instantly annoyed. Can you blame him?

HARRY
Do you want something in specific, Brad, or is this an all-purpose irritation?

BRAD
What? You don’t want to talk to your old friend?

HARRY
We were never friends.

BRAD
Classmate, then. Looks like I got win this round. Got booted out of Empire High last.

The Empire Lions score.

BRAD
Pity, I prefer being on the winning side.

HARRY
Oh, that one really hit close to home. Because, you know, I’ve become so full of school spirit in the three days I’ve been here.

BRAD
Oh, of course. You’ve been in so many schools, every team’s the home team to you.

Harry catches Brad off guard when he grabs Brad by his shirt collar.

HARRY
Do YOU want to go to school at a hospital?

BRAD
Daddy Warbucks’ gave up on anger management, I see. I’d expect this from someone as low-class as you.

HARRY
If you’ve got something to say to me, just goddamn say it.

BRAD
No class, Osborn. No honor, no dignity. Money’s all you have. Your father may have fooled all the other old money, but he hasn’t fooled me.

Harry lets Brad go.

HARRY
No, you’re making a fool of yourself all by your lonesome.

INT. OSCORP INDUSTRIES – OUTSIDE MEETING ROOM – EVENING

Norman exits the meeting drained, pushed to his limits. Harry is waiting for him.

NORMAN
Don't tell me. You got kicked out of school, again.

HARRY
For your information, I happen to be doing just fine in school. Is that the kind of person you do business with?

NORMAN
A regrettable necessity in businesses where the disposal of toxic byproducts is required.

HARRY
“A regrettable necessity”? Is there anything you wouldn't do to make money?

NORMAN
How about this? How about in twenty years, when you have five million employees all dependent on you to provide them a steady job and sizable paycheck, then you come back and pass judgment on my business methods!

HARRY
Tell me this much. How much of your company is built on blood money?

Norman SLAPS Harry.

NORMAN
Get this through your head, “son”. What kind of money do you think pads out your trust fund? What kind buys the clothes on the back? What kind keeps you occupied with pleasurable company every Saturday while I have to work and work and WORK just to keep from going out of business!

HARRY
I never wanted your money! Never!

NORMAN
It's in your blood, Harry! It's your destiny! You may try to deny it with your weak-willed protests, but every ounce of you is an Osborn!

INT. PARKER FAMILY HOUSE – BASEMENT – NIGHT

Peter is slumped over on his work-desk, sleeping. Under his eyelids, his eyes enter into REM sleep. And hears a voice whispering to him. We catch FLASHES of spider imagery.

VOICE
(V.O.)
Danger. Watch out for danger. Feel the tingling in the web. Life is a web. Feel the tingling. Discover. Know. Understand. Instinct. Hunt. Hunt the hunters. Freedom. Power. Understand. Feel the tingling. Power. Freedom. HUNT!

Peter's eyes pop open. As if in a dream, he stands. Turns to look as the chalkboard. He picks up a piece of chalk, wipes out an equation with his hand. Begins rewriting it. The numbers are in a harsh scrawl, unlike the more languid text he wrote earlier. A knock at the door interrupts.

PETER
Just a minute.

He tries to continue, but he's lost his chain of thought.

PETER
Come in.

Ben opens the door and walks down the stairs.

BEN
What are you doing still up?

PETER
Couldn't sleep. Had an epiphany.

BEN
I had those too at your age. They're nothing to be ashamed of.

PETER
No, it's like... it's like the formulas are writing themselves! I've got to test this, mix up a new batch...

BEN
Hold on there, eager beaver. It can wait until morning.

PETER
Uncle Ben!

BEN
Don't argue. It's a school night. Sleep.

INT. PARKER FAMILY HOUSE – BASEMENT – MORNING

Peter wakes up. Gets out of bed. Yawns. Stretches. Feels good. Feels GREAT. He takes a step. Houston, we have a problem. Someone's glued his feet to the carpet. He tries to take a step. Can't. He strains and... RIP! The turf tears right out. He grabs a pair of socks, sits down, pulls the carpet off his feet, and looks at them. They look normal. He runs his hands over them. Nothing. Pulls his socks on.

INT. PARKER FAMILY HOUSE – MORNING

Peter comes upstairs, dressed for the day.

PETER
We need zinc.

BEN
Not shaving cream?

PETER
Zinc! It's what's been missing all along!

BEN
Okay, we'll drop by the store later.

MAY
I fixed wheatcakes!

Peter sits down. Grabs a fork. Digs in. CUT TO LATER. Peter has developed a voracious appetite. The stack of wheatcakes lessens and lessens until it's gone.

BEN
Hey, Pete, save some for the rest of us!

MAY
Don't berate the boy for finally developing a healthy appetite.

PETER
Breakfast was great, Aunt May. I gotta book.

He stands, tries to drop his fork. It sticks to his palm. Ben turns to look at him. Peter hurriedly sticks his fork-hand in his pocket.

BEN
Pick you up after school?

PETER
Sounds great.

EXT. STREET – MORNING

Peter crosses the street, still marveling at his hand. He hears an engine revving, turns to see a BLACK SEDAN coming right at him. He screams and LEAPS out of the way... THIRTY FEET out of the way, landing and sticking to a WALL! He SCREAMS again and drops, screaming the rest of the way down.

INT. SEDAN – MORNING

The DRIVER looks at the bush which Peter has landed in. One gloved hand holds a cell-phone to his ear.

DRIVER
Negative! Repeat, negative! Target... evaded.

NORMAN
(filtered)
Evaded? How?

DRIVER
He... jumped.

Long beat.

NORMAN
(filtered)
Abort. Now.

INT. OSBORN MANSION- MEETING ROOM

Norman hangs up the phone as Menken enters.

NORMAN
I want another sample.

Harry walks in and looks back and forth between Menken and Norman. Menken exits the room.

INT. PUBLIC LIBRARY – MORNING

Peter bursts in. Runs to the bathroom.

INT. BATHROOM – MORNING

Peter runs in, opens a stall, sits down... nearly falls in. He instinctively STICKS to the sides of the stall and pulls himself up. He looks at his hands again.

PETER
What the hell is happening to me?

Then he sees it. A gang symbol graffiti on the side of the stall. A SPIDER-WEB.

FLASHBACK
Peter recalls the sting, himself falling, then... the SPIDER fleeing.

PETER
No way... NO WAY!

He suddenly feels his stomach rumbling. A disagreement with something he ate? He goes to the mirror, pulls his shirt up. Before his very eyes, his abs become defined.

PETER
I'm built!

EXT. PUBLIC LIBRARY – MORNING

Peter exits the library through the back. Looks around. No one. He raises his foot, plants it against the wall... and heaves his other foot over it, WALKING UP THE WALL! He laughs, exhilarated, puts his hands down and scampers up the wall on all fours. When he reaches the top, he grabs a pipe to pull himself up. When he squeezes, it's crushed like a piece of paper.

PETER
Whoa! Yeah! Yeah!

INT. MIDTOWN HIGH SCHOOL – MORNING

Peter enters. He sees Flash. A diabolical grin comes onto his face.

PETER
Ohhhhh Flassssh.

FLASH
What do you want, twerp?

PETER
Well, I was thinking about that time when I tried to beat you up. That was... unsportsmanly of me. I owe you. So I'll let you have the first punch.

Flash rolls his eyes.

FLASH
What is this, some kind of practical joke?

PETER
No. I want a rematch.

FLASH
Should I tie a hand behind my back?

PETER
Put 'em up, Flash.

FLASH
You're gonna feel this in the mornin'...

PETER
Oh, I bet you say that to all the boys.

Flash, enraged, hits Peter. Peter doesn't move an inch. Flash pulls back, holding his hand.

FLASH
Ow! What kind of game is this?

PETER
No game, Flash. C'mon. I can still be “Two-Punch Parker”.

Flash roars and throws another punch. Peter dodges it. Yawns.

PETER
That the best you got?

Flash CHARGES Peter. Peter steps out of the way, revealing an OPEN LOCKER behind him. He trips Flash, who falls into the locker. Peter slams it shut on Flash.

FLASH
Let me out of here, you goddamn queer!

PETER
I didn't hear the magic word. See you around the galaxy, Flash.

He walks away.

INT. CLASSROOM – MORNING

The lecture is interrupted by the school nurse opening the door.

NURSE
Time for mandatory drug screening.

The students GROAN, Peter most of all.

PETER
Not again...

INT. MIDTOWN HIGH SCHOOL – OUTSIDE NURSE'S OFFICE – MORNING

MJ is behind Peter.

MJ
Peter, have you seen Flash?

PETER
(innocent as the driven snow)
Last time I saw him he was in the can.

Suddenly, he hears a screaming.

MAN
(O.S.)
Everyone, run! Giant spider! Giant spider!

ANT-MAN runs in.

ANT-MAN
Freeze! Where is he? Where is he?

MJ
What are you doing?

ANT-MAN
My network of ants reported a giant spider in this very room! Stand back, citizen, he's right...

He points a SCANNER around. It fixes on Peter. He slaps the top of it. Still on Peter.

ANT-MAN
You're the giant spider?

PETER
Please! Do I look like a giant spider to you?

ANT-MAN
I don't like your tone, citizen. You shouldn't speak like that to Ant-Man!

PETER
Ant-Man? Ant-Man? What's your power? To give dry kisses at family reunions? To bring casseroles to Thanksgiving dinner?

ANT-MAN
I'll have you know that I am an Avenger!

PETER
Really? That's impressive.

ANT-MAN
Thank you.

PETER
What's Emma Peel like?

ANT-MAN
It's too bad you aren't a giant spider. Maybe you could've become a member.

PETER
Me? An “Avenger”? Don't make me laugh!

Ant-Man SHRINKS and rides out on a flying ant.

MJ
Way to stand up to the cape, Peter. It is Peter, right?

PETER
Yeah. That's my name. Peter.

INT. STACY FAMILY HOME – NIGHT

The phone rings. Gwen picks it up.

GWEN
Hello?

INTERCUT with Peter at Jason's house.

PETER
It's Peter. Listen, can you get away tonight?

GWEN
Yeah, sure. Not past my bedtime yet.

PETER
Good. Get over to Jason Lonello's house right away.

GWEN
Why?

PETER
Because it's party-time.

GWEN
You're inviting me to a party?

PETER
Well, yeah. That's the general idea!

GWEN
Oh my God! No one even invites me to parties! Be right there.

She hangs up.

GWEN
Dad, I'm going out.

MR. STACY
(O.S.)
Where?

GWEN
A party.

MR. STACY
(O.S.)
Who else is going to be there?

GWEN
Peter Parker.

MR. STACY
(O.S.)
Alright. He seems like a nice, responsible boy.

INT. LONELLO FAMILY HOME- LIVING ROOM

Peter stands on his head, doing a kegger. KONG, an overweight senior, eggs him on.

KONG
Go! Go! Go! Go!

Peter finally stops. Beer spills over his mouth as he spits the hose out. He unsteadily gets to his feet. Kong raises his arm in victory.

KONG
The Force is strong in this one!

There's a knock at the door. Peter wipes his mouth off and answers it. Gwen looks behind him to see the party in full-swing.

GWEN
Peter?

PETER
The one and only.

He pulls her in.

GWEN
A honest-to-god party! This is the awesomest thing a boy has ever done to me and my god how pathetic is that...

A BASKETBALL PLAYER sees Peter.

PLAYER
Yo, Pete.

He nods at Peter. Peter nods back.

GWEN
Oh my god! You're one of those people that other people nod to! It's like you're a whole different person.

PETER
Yeah. It's EXACTLY like that.

He KISSES her suddenly, then walks away. She stays, fingering her lip with a “What the hell was THAT?” expression. Jason walks up to Gwen.

JASON
Gwen? Gwen STACY? Geez, look at you! You're all...

GWEN
Yes, I do have breasts now. Thanks for noticing.

JASON
No! Not that! I mean, you do, but... you look so mature.

GWEN
Thanks.

JASON
Oh God no.

GWEN
What?

JASON
Peter's about to do the Whiteboy Dance.

GWEN
What's that?

JASON
A force of destruction unparalleled in our time. Many white people attempt it when they go to parties, thinking they're cool enough to dance. They always pay for their hubris.

PETER
(O.S.)
Woooooo!

JASON
It has begun.

Meanwhile, Peter dances... badly. He bumps into MJ, who is dancing rather more successfully.

MJ
Peter? What are you doing here?

PETER
Having fun. You?

MJ
I thought you ran away from home or something... it's all over the gossip networks.

PETER
Me and Jas gonna have words later...

MJ
What happened with your parents?

PETER
I didn’t have the nerve to tell them the truth.

MJ
That's too bad. My parents... we're not on speaking terms real often. If I had someone to talk to about... stuff. I'd take advantage of it any time I could.

PETER
Is that so?

MJ
Okay, not to get all self-righteous or anything, because I know it seems like you probably have the most tyrannical, evil parents who ever lived... but trust me, you don't. Just talk to them about the world of Peter Parker. They'll understand. They're good people. It's what they go.

PETER
Thanks for the advice.

Peter stands up to leave…

MJ
Hey, where are you going?

PETER
To follow your advice.

Peter leaves the Lonello family house. MJ watches him go.

MJ
Just dig yourself deeper, girl.

EXT. PARKER FAMILY HOME – NIGHT

Outside of the Parker family home were police cars and an ambulance. May is crying, standing on the sidewalk waiting for him.

PETER
Aunt May, what's going on?

MAY
It's Ben, he... he... the man came in through the window, Ben woke up...

PETER
No...

MAY
He got his gun and went downstairs. There was a struggle. It went off...

PETER
No! No!

MAY
He's gone, Peter...

PETER
No!

OPENING SEQUENCE

With this scene primarily what I tried to figure out was how I would begin the PILOT episode. We have seen many introductions to various heroes throughout the years and I wanted something that would make this introduction stand out as it’s own. Thus, I decided to have the beginning start at the end of the episode. Originally the opening was Spider-Man chasing the Green Goblin, which I believe you can read in the Deleted Scenes section. But, soon after I finished the PILOT I realized that Norman Osborn shouldn’t become the Green Goblin immediately, but that his monster transformation should evolve over a period of time. Instead I just went with the concept of Acme Warehouse. The burglar crouching panicked against the wall with a shadowy figure looming over him. In the end, and I will probably carry this beginning onto the final filming PILOT episode once I get to that point, it provides a mysterious and nice aesthetic opening to the episode.

PETER'S INTRODUCTION

This scene stayed in the episode, through all of it’s various stages. With the “fine” “fine” dialogue provided by the second draft composed by Zev, the co-writer of the episode. The ending however has been modified from what it was originally. In the first drafts Peter was bitten while at a field trip at Oscorp. The original ending to this scene was Peter bumping into Harry and having a conversation which eventually led to the basement scene. Most of this original dialogue still exists, but just scattered around the episode.

HARRY'S INTRODUCTION

You might notice a structural similarity between Harry and Peter’s scenes leading up to their first encounter. This was purposely played out so that a comparison could be drawn between the two characters very quickly. Peter has girl trouble, Harry has any girl he wants. Peter is shy and timid, Harry is bold and outgoing. Also as the season progresses Harry becomes more and more involved with the work at Oscorp making it more of his responsibility. This scene also allows for a darker father and son relationship story to play out, in which the tension foreshadows what is to come.

JASON & PETER + MALLRATS CONNECTION

This scene has been modified around a lot. Originally the only part of this scene that existed was Flash and Peter’s encounter that took place in the hallways. Not wanting to lose the interaction between the two I added in a “set-up” scene and a new location to have the scene take place. One of the many inside facts about this episode is that part of Jason and Peter’s conversation is inspired by the words of wisdom from Brodie to TS in Kevin Smith’s Mallrats. The whole fart scenario is nod to the film.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PETER AND HARRY FURTHER EXPLORED

The Peter and Aunt May scene has been around since the second draft. But, this time around with more of an emphasis on Peter’s parents I thought it would be appropriate to give a slight hint of what their family relationship is like. And once again the differences between Peter and Harry that I have been talking about once again shows up as Harry is having a one-nighter, while Peter is busy helping his Aunt program the television to record.

THE BITE SCENE

The original Peter gets bitten scene followed very closely to what Ultimates had set up. Peter going to a field trip at Oscorp. But, soon after discovering that this was rushing ahead on too many levels I decided to go for a more classic comic book route. With only a few minor details thrown in. Harry and Peter’s introduction is based off of their original encounter in the hallways of Midtown High School. Mostly attributed to Zev. The song of Harry’s cell phone, Tomorrow by SR-71 was an appropriate song that fit Harry’s persona and was more than just a cell phone ring. He’s scared of who he might become and eventually does become, his father. And the character of Miles Yuma is based around the look of the original scientist from the classic Spider-Man comics. The ending of this scene, with the rowdy observers and furious Miles Yuma is also heavily inspired by the origin scene in Amazing Fantasy 15. The scientists in the classics laughed at Peter when he got bitten, saying that Peter just wanted to gain attention. Thus, in this modernized version of the same scene once again the same view are taken from Peter’s fellow observers and the top scientist himself.

DREAMING AT THE HOSPITAL

These are the two scenes that I am most proud of. Originally entering this project, the interaction between Harry and Ben Parker. The history of Richard Parker. And the dream sequence were all things that I aspired to have in the PILOT. Thus, on the third draft when I came back to switch a lot of the scenes around to lessen Norman’s role in the PILOT I was finally able to fit these two scenes back into the episode. The dream sequence can also be looked in more metaphorical terms in that Norman Osborn is the ‘father’ of the Symbiote Peter/Spider-Man while Ben Parker is the father of Peter/Spider-Man. The location, dialogue and mention of Gwen Stacy was also used as a means for this series to have bookends. The whole series revolves around one arc, that of Gwen Stacy because a lot of Peter’s life comes into focus around that time period and around his beginnings as Spider-Man. And, yes the green ooze and Norman’s face contortions do represent the future Green Goblin. The dive is symbolic of Gwen falling from the bridge.

NORMAN TELLS HARRY THE TRUTH "BUT I BLAME MYSELF"

If you read the first/second draft teleplay you will see that this scene is directly ripped from Harry and Norman’s encounter at the Oscorp field trip. This dialogue was written by Zev and I had to find a way to put it in. So, here it is.

THE CREATION OF BOCK

Now there are various things to talk about concerning this scene mainly because it is the most deviating character adaptation from the comic books. Throughout we have all known the ‘agent’ as being just that, the ‘agent’ that cheats Spider-Man out of his rightful earnings. But, this was the character I wanted since the beginning. This is one of the many aspects of the PILOT that show the episode as what I want it to be. A ‘car crash’ scenario as I call it. Bock, name created by Zev, is not hundred percent a bad guy per say. Just someone that is desperate and one who has gotten in with some bad people along the way. Jimmy D. is one of these guys. He’s a loan shark, thus giving Bock a motive for ‘stealing’ the money from Peter. I have been accused once on one board for being a racist against Cubans, not the fact at all. Jimmy D’s nationality was inspired by the smart talking loan sharks from the Punisher films. If you really want to see what Jimmy would be like just look at any one of the Tortoro brothers from the Punisher film. Because those characters were the main inspiration.

THE CREATION OF DANTE

The second major differing factor, and another that even appeared in Marvelmovie’s review is that the burglar should just be known as the burglar. But, to me the burglar always carried more of a potential story. As well as a contribution to the ‘car crash’ effect. Here we have this guy, down on his luck, racism concerning his color and financial status making it difficult for him to get a job, and on top of all that he has a son to raise all by himself. Poverty is his life. It’s not that he is just some guy that is a thief, but he has a motive. A motive that anyone of us would do the same things that he does for. It also allows me to help fleshen him out as a character.

ACME WAREHOUSE

Acme warehouse. A place that has come to be iconic in the Spider-Man mythos. Dante’s connection to Acme was to help me create the abandoned warehouse as it’s own being and living character. Acme Warehouse isn’t close by to Forest Hills geography wise, Dante could have hid in other places. Why Acme? This episode attempts to explain all that. And another nod to Kevin Smith is in the RW, originally the father was to be named Randal. But, in the end I decided against it but still have it in it’s abbreviated form.

"THE OSCORP REPUTATION STRIKES AGAIN"

This is another scene that has remained. And also a living testament to the earlier conceptual Harry and Ben confrontation scene. Harry knew that something was off the first time he met Ben. Also, this scene is loosely inspired by the “apple didn’t fall far from the tree” scene in the PILOT episode of Smallville.

PETER CHANGES

The montage sequence was created from various scenes from the original draft basically. It was the main concern of, how will I tell who Peter has become? Slowly through this montage we see that his whole personality has changed. A new concept that came to mind when I sat down and began to re-work the PILOT episode. The symbiote Spider-Man always portrayed Peter’s bad side. Which is exactly what this was. Peter, like everyone else would, got overpowered by this emerging greed and arrogance. He began to think that he was a God compared to everyone else. Most drastically, especially for Peter, is the new way he begins to treat his aunt and uncle. Peter’s wardrobe also revolved around the symbiote in it’s black and gang member type theme. Gwen Stacy’s line at the end sums everything up, “you’re just wearing a mask.” As a director this is a segment of the montage that I can’t wait until I put it onto reels. The emotion in it, the cinematography and locations I have planned. Trust me, this scene will end up perfect. The inspiration of Peter in the last scene, and other parts of the montage is probably what you least expected. I have a friend who once attempted to commit suicide. He began to feel depressed, thus he took up the habit of excessive alcohol and smoking. He began to distance himself from others by wearing headphones constantly. His point of view changed to the point in which it was sad and often pitiful sometimes just to look at him. Most evident of this was the glance Peter gives Gwen: inside he is full of emotion, outside he appears soulless. To put a happy ending on the tale, he’s still alive and has completely reverted to his regular self. So, Peter’s journey that starts is actually based off of an actual experience I went through as an observer. Noticing what went on with his family, other friends, etc. Just different and not as arrogant dialogue. So, I think that’s the most interesting part in the making of this PILOT. Peter’s new self represents the attitude of a prone to suicide teenager.

AUNT MAY AND UNCLE BEN'S REACTION

Once again. Here is a scene that I probably witnessed once or twice during my friend’s depression. This is when he started to take drugs more and more often. The staging however is displayed to create more of a dramatic feeling and aura.

DANTE IS NOT A KILLER

Back to Dante’s story we see and acknowledge what he is capable of. And his reaction. You didn’t see him shoot someone, take the money and run out grinning. You see just the opposite. He hides in the alleyway, tears running down his eyes haunted by the crime that he has just committed. He’s not a murderer, just a man in times of desperation.

AUNT MAY GOES TO HARRY FOR HELP

The staging is inspired by Smallville, the firelight dancing off of Harry’s face. These are the scenes that are often found in Smallville. And, well here is Harry talking to Aunt May.

THE WRESTLING ARENA

I’m not going to comment on this scene in particular. But, rather mention a lot of inside references. The Executioner was the original name for The Punisher. The Leap Frog and Gladiator are Daredevil villains. And you probably were able to figure out, Uncanny X-Men, Fantastic Four, and the Incredible Hulk.

HARRY'S BLACKMAIL

This scene is a very important scene. It doesn’t accomplish much plot wise, except for finishing an additional subplot of the story. But, it does tell us something about Harry’s character. That can pretty much be summed up as “good intentions can sometimes lead to bad decisions.” To me, the drugs did not create the Second Green Goblin, Harry’s upbringing does. And I think this scene best shows that. Harry was always destined to become his father. And now once again skipping ahead to…

WHY IS DANTE AFRAID AFTER PRESSING THE TRIGGER?

This was the scene that told me how to do the whole Dante back story. From none of the comics did I get the slightest inkling that Dante ever set out to kill Ben, but that his finger slipped on the trigger. Thus, resulting the look of genuine shock.

BOCK GETS AWAY?

Bock’s story ends? Well, might or might not who am I to judge?

THE FINAL SCENE

The end scene finally leads into the series. We are now at the beginning of a path. Peter will make decisions and eventually he will truly become the man he was always destined to become. Responsibility is a journey. The ICONIC POSE and last shot is inspired by Peter Parker: Spider-Man Senseless Violence. I just thought that would be a great way to end the episode. Set up for what is to come. So, hopefully you’ve learned some things about what went into making the PILOT episode. And hope you enjoy the rest of the first season.

The “car crash” technique & The Pilot is about ‘villains’:
> Peter starts off as a friendly guy, turns bad when his ego takes control of him.
> Dante starts off as a desperate family man, who turns “bad” when he turns to a life of crime.
> Bock is a struggling talent agent who gets hooked up with the wrong people and turns bad when he starts manipulating Peter.
>>The three characters above ‘clash’ at Peter’s last wrestling gig.
> Harry starts off as a concerned and overall friendly, but slightly arrogant, guy who turns “bad” when he makes the decision of reverting to blackmail immediately.
> Norman is first seen as a regular “Papa Warbucks” who the audience finds out as bad when he ignores the fact that the mission he sends his son out on is illegal.
