Wanted to post here and get some feedback. I am working on a edit of SM3 over at fanedit.org, and wanted to give you guys the basic rundown of what I'm proposing. I have two cuts of the film already done, so this is going to happen, just want to tweak it to the point that other Spidey fans like me think we finally get as much out of SM3 as possible.

I was one of the many many people who walked out of the theatre after SM2 and started counting the days till SM3. When I found out it was going to be the black suit (at this point, I thought they were saving Venom till SM4) I went though the roof in excitement. Long story short, we know the crapfest SM3 turned out to be, I have only tried to watch the movie once on DVD since its opening night, and didn't make it all the way though, but his cut, I did, and I found myself enjoying the film. However, the gears had started turning, and SM3 became my first edit.
Originally, it was going to be basic, even more basic than Nemesis is going to be. But it has so evolved from there, as I've read these things often do. Adigitalman graciously allowed me to use his cut as my baseline, and originally I thought you wouldn't be able to tell much difference from his and mine, but this thing has taken on a life of its own. Here is a basic rundown of the plotpoints that have changed:
1) First and foremost SPIDER-MAN DOESN'T TAKE HIS MASK OFF OVER AND OVER IN THE FILM!!!!
I HATED that (I know I hid that real good) how he kept taking his mask off in SM2 and SM3. I was able to remove every time he has his mask off in public now save one, and that was after he stopped Sandman on Spider-Man Day. I just really enjoy that scene and his line "Where do all these guys come from." (This does include removing the scene where he is standing behind the HUGE crowd of New Yorkers on SM Day without his mask. Geez, you don't think someone snapped a pic there with all those cameras! That took some editing, but it turned out well.
2) Sandman has the edge taken off, just a bit
I tried to soften on Sandy to make his exit in the end more understandable (Yes, I did not change the ending, at least that part). Edits for him include in the ally when Venom comes to him, Venom now says "....like you Spiderman won't let you help your poor daughter. Look, I want to kill the spider, together, he doesn't stand a chance. Interested?" Venom never says "You want to kill the Spider." Sandman doesn't want Spidey dead, just out of the way long enough to get the money for his daughter (this would have been fleshed out more if Rami had used the origianl meeting between the two in the film that he shot, but for some reason he didn't), so I wanted Flint to agree to the team up, but with a look on his face of "I'm not sure what I'm getting myself into"
This makes his line at the construction site (I didn't want any of this) reasonate that much more. I also added him saying "I'm not a bad person, I just had bad luck" to Spidey right before Spidey forgives him. It really makes the scene flow better, makes Peters reason for just letting him go more beliveable.
3) Harry is more silent, more driven by revenge
When we see Harry battling Peter, he is much more silent now, removed are the "You knew this was coming, Pete" (why would you call someone your trying to kill by their shortened best friend buddy name?) "Hows that Spidey" and "I protected you in high school". Harry is driven by pure hatred of Peter when fighting him, Peter is the one who does most of the talking, especially during their fight at the mansion, Pete does all the trash talking there.
and finally, the two biggest changes to the film....
4) The symbiont never comes off, until Peter drives it off at the tower
We see Peter get consumed by this creature, and it wants to bond with him, he goes through all this trouble to get it off in the tower, so how is it he can just take the suit off and on, and place it in a locked box????? I HATED that in the film. Now we see the symbiont get on Pete as before, but we never see him take it off, never see him without it. We must assume, due to the store, that its under his normal clothes, but this isn't a stretch, as he wears his Spidey suit under his clothes at times. This also leads me to the main goal of this film.....
5) We truly feel Peters slide/battle into the darkness, and he does become evil
The movie has gone substantial restructuring in the middle, the meeting with MJ in the apartment now doesn't happen until AFTER he fights (and thinks he kills) Marco in the subway, making his arrogant attitude make much more sence. Peter also opens this scene in the corner, very perturbed and not particualrly with it (in the film, he is pre-occupided with just finding out Sandman killed Ben), but now, this scene follows the one where he looks in the mirror at himself and the black suit, and I have added back in the shot of the Venom monster in the mirror looking back at him. It gives this whole sequence a very creepy, almost horror movie feel. It weired me out a few times while I was working on it. (Also, it was midnight when I did the edit)
Now when he goes and talks to May, and is almost smiling when he says "Spiderman killed him" talking about Marco, it all makes much more sense, much more in the charcter of a Peter Parker slowly being consumed by the suit. Pete flucuates between being good and bad until Harrys revelation about being the other guy, which really puts him over the edge, and from then on, he is evil Parker. (There is NO strut down the street, that was a piece of trash cinamatography. Thats to Adigitalman for that)
Other list of changes/edits:
1) Film opens just like the theatrical release at the premire of MJ- different from Adigitalmans cut
2) Spider-sense added before Pete is carried off by Harry. Seens this was suppose to be in the film, as Peters face changes from happy to concerned right before Harry grabs him
3) Sandmans transformation sequence no longer has the idiot scientists. (Like the How it should have ended version of SM 3, where the last scientist turns to the others and says "Here's and idea, how about you go out there and check to see if its a bird before you mutate the crap out of somebody.") It also makes Sandman very alone when he gets transformed, you really feel like your in there with him, because you don't know whats going on as well.
4) MJ now says "Don't give me the horse thing." and then leads into the words sounding like they are from her father. Makes the comment much sharper
5) Spider-Man day restructured where Peter never stands behind a huge crowd with cameras without his mask. Web slings in from Gwens into.
6) New transition sequence after Peter learns Sandman killed Ben. Now leads into Peter in his apartment turning up the volume on his scanner, and changing into his Spiderman suit. Pete is consumed by the symbiont directly after.
7) This leads in to the web slinging sequence, which has been spliced together with the sequence where he goes to the bank Marco just robbed. The scene now runs as if Peter stumbles upon the bank robbery while trying out the new suit. A voice over saying "Marco" when he sees sand running into the sewer lets the viewer know what has happened here, and it sets the motivation of Peter to just suddenly rip out a whole section of asphalt and dive in the sewer. Basically makes the symbiont takeover and the bank robbery happen at the same time, same night. The MJ meeting has been moved to later in the film.
Symbiont monster looking back at Peter in the mirror when he returns home has been added back into the film. Its very creepy. I wouldn't let young kids watch it. I can see why Rami cut it. Just watched it again, man that scene is scary now. Scene cuts to black for a few seconds before the next scene starts
9) MJ talking to Peter about doing something he would regret happens next. Opens with Peter standing in the corner, clearly un-nerved (from the last scene). Peters comments now seem very defensive, like he's covering something (since he think's he's already killed Sandman), and his arrogance matches the fact he has the suit on now.
10) Speaks to Aunt May about Spider-Man killing Sandman directly afterwards
11) Following the MJ calling Harry scene, Peter goes and see's Dr Conners about the suit
12) Leads into MJ kissing Harry, dancing scene gone. This scene is exactly the same is Adigitalman's cut of the film.
13) After Osborns "we attack his heart", it leads into Peter's apology to the landlord, and calling MJ
14) This leads directly into the phone ringing in MJ's apartment, and when she goes to answer, Harry grabs her
15) Harry is cut from the park breakup scene. The only reason he is cut is because when they show MJ walking by, she doesn't seem that upset she just broke up with a man she loves and was going to ask her to marry her.
16) Obviously, Peter has the suit on all the time in my cut, so there is no shot of the chest before he goes to confront Harry
17) New music added for the Harry/Pete fight. Fits this is the final battle between these two, as its been building for 3 movies. Sadly, the music I use ends right after Harry is thrown into the wall and runs into his lair, it reverts back to Young's score. It works, but I don't like the transition, and its beyound my skills right now to fix.
18) Disco Pete cut
19) Re-worked seqene where Brock is fired. Added in footage of Black Spidey flipping in the air (from the trailers) which seqways into Peter hitting on Betty and the Black suit Spiderman photos. Corny music removed, new music is added.
20) Leads into the Peter/Conners conversation over the phone. Still has Adigitalman's music, may change
21) Jazz Pete cut (Adigitalman's cut)
22) We see Pete get the suit off, the shot of him in the shower, which leads directly into the Venom/Sandman meeting
23) Sandman no longer says "End of the line, SPiderman". Venom no longer says "I want to kill him too, thats why I've been looking for you." now says "I've been looking for you." and leads into his speech. No comments about Sandman wanting Spidey dead are left, because he doesn't want him dead, just out of the way. He accepts the aggreement for this end, although he's not sure what he's getting himself into.
24) Peter now seen walking the streets, looks up at MJ, and walks away. Shows just how guilty and despondent he feels after getting the suit off.
25) MJ is kidnapped, scene leads into May visiting Peter at his apartment, giving him the motivation to set things right
26) News report SEVERLY cut down. Used Adigitalman's cut for base, cut down even more. The cross-eyed reporter no longer says anything about the name of the hostage, Peter takes off to put on his suit when he see's Venom, and his look of horror a reaction from seeing the creature he thought he had shed.
27) Alfred butler scene cut down. The butler just tells him his father died by his own hand, no "I loved your father" line.
28a) ALMOST cut out the American flag shot, because it is sooo in your face. Have the whole scene scored and cut, but feel the original flows better, so unless there is no outcry, I am leaving the original in.
28) Too many cuts in the final battle to mention. Most are Adigitalman's cuts, I cut the crowd out in a few more instances, it flows better.
29) Reduced the dialoge between Jameson and the kid. Took away from the action too much.
30) Sandman now says while looking at Peter "All I have left, is my daughter. I'm not a bad person, just had bad luck." at which point Peter forgives him.
31) Movie ends as before, with the final swing I've already shown added to the end of the picture. Playing with the thought of adding a final Peter voice over, have one ready, but its not very long.
There may be some more cuts I forgot to mention. Its a pretty drastic overhaul of the movie, especially the restructuring of the middle and near end scenes, but it plays really well. I may end up cutting the Peter/Conners phone conversation, as I feel that the scene I added with Peter/Better/Jameson shows how bad Peter is getting. I think it may be a redundant scene at this point, plus with my already altering music the scene before, a Adigitalman altering the very next scene, it doesn't seem to flow that great, its too different from the film.
Anyways, thats the story. I have been working on this a good bit while I have been sick, had to do something. The film is probably 80% complete, I am just working on some audio. I might be needing to cut more in the film, though, due to it being too large for a normal DVD disc. I did DVDshrink, but I think it messed with the quality of the audio, especially around some of the cuts. The volume got louder, and it does't do that in MPEG Video Wizard at those points.
So, how does this sound to all of you?
