Spidey 2 was initially supposed to have Doctor Octopus and the Lizard, and the Black Cat as well. If you watch the movie closely enough you can see where the Lizard's role (and lines) has been grafted onto Doctor Octopus.

Question is, why did Raimi & co pull back from a superpowered royal rumble that time? And why are they going for it this time?

Does this explain the fact that Doc Ock had a shifting personnality and was manipulated by his tentacles, instead of having brain damage?

Anyway, I think multiple villains can work well, it depends how they are introduced. Having too many created in one movie, especially an earlier movie such as Spider Man 2, would have been rushed I think. Instead, they focused on the emblematic Doctor Octopus, and they had time to introduce Doctor Connors and prepare the audience to the second Green Goblin. Just a quick thought on the subject...

I didn't know that.

I heard about it but I didn't think it was real.

Black Cat hasn't been developed at all and Conners was in Spider-Man 2. So I think they did that so Lizard could be in this movie.

Where is that?

2/3 is equal to .66666... villains... thats not even 1 villain!

are you sure you have your math right!?...lol

And Spidey 1 had both the Goblin and Ock in an early draft(It sucked BTW).
I think the fourth villain will for the most part play a background role and threaten to be the focus of Spidey 4.

What was the plot?^

It was basically the same-

But the accident in the lab that makes Osborn the goblin occurs while he's firing Ock (For the stupid reason that Ock stands to get a percentage of the inventions he creates for Oscorp and Osborn doesn't want to pay him.) and both Ock and Osborn are affected. Osborn is exposed to the performance enhancers and Ock's tentacles are fused to him. Neither of them go to the hospital however, and Ock spends the rest of the movie trying to exact revenge on Osborn. He and Spidey only battle when Spidey gets in his way.

All the stuff with Doc Ock being a good scientist who befriends Peter and then has to fight his evil side is the Lizard/Connors. You know at the end, where Spidey defeats Ock by electrocuting him, but then Ock comes back a second time and Spidey has to convince him to destroy the machine? The second time was supposed to be the Lizard, not Doc Ock.

That sucks. I'm glad we didn't get that.

Thanks for posting.

Why would the Lizard be asked or volunteer to destroy the fusion machine? Why would he sacrifice himself? Doc Ock did it because it was his fault.

The script was re-written so many times and had so many writers both credited and uncredited. I just can't see anything from an original draft staying in.

Yeah- the script was a REALLY BAD read. I don't remeber everything- but there was also a part when Peter decides to burn his Spidey costume. I believe after Aunt May is attacked.

The only cool thing about that Koepp script was Pete practicing with his webshooters.

That costume looks too cool to burn.

I'm getting the feeling that the fourth villain is BLACK CAT.

I'm gonna tell you something right now:

There is no cohesive and intelligent story that can be created that combines both Sandman, Harry's arc's conclusion, MJ/Peter, Gwen, Captain Stacy, The Bugle, Aunt May, Eddie Brock, The Symbiote, AND Black Cat.

the worst part is that he goes to a costume store and buys a new spider-man suit!

The part I didnt like about SM2 is that Ock learns spider-man's identity.

It's obvious the whole "Peter Parker, brilliant but lazy" thing was something Curt Conners would say and not Octavius.

Curt Connors did say that to Octavious. Ock then mentioned it to Pete before the accident.

It wouldn't make sense for Connors to ever say that directly to Peter. A professor wouldn't say that to a student. Then , Octavious said it to Peter at the end as a sort of joke, because now it makes sense.

I remember how pumped I was to see the Lizard in S-M2,and then they cut him out.

Agreed. Osborn returning would mesh. Ock returning would at least create anticipation for the fourth film with the idea of Spidey facing the Sinister Six. But Black Cat would bring nothing to the table. Her only purpose is as a potential love interest and ally for Spidey niether or which is needed.

Because Connors was responsible for making the machine, of course. Lines like, "I won't die a monster?"

Re-writes are not always complete overhauls. If the director wants everything changed he gets a brand new script. A lot of re-writes are simply moving stuff around, toning down expensive sequences, improving dialogue, adding humour, etc.

I would say that they should leave Black Cat out of the movie. How would she get her powers if there was no super soldier formula? Maybe she breaks into Oscorp & finds the peformance enhancers & takes them but would you also have to take the goblin formula for the performance enhancers to work? That would be one powerful woman if they were to increase her strength 800% using performance enhancers.

The whole "brilliant but lazy" Ock being a mentor seemed more Connors-like now that he mentions it, but I'm really not sure.
