Beard may direct sci-fi adaptation.
by Chris Tilly, IGN UK
UK, September 25, 2008 - Steven Spielberg has acquired the rights to science-fiction novel Chocky, with a view to directing the film himself, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Written by John Day of the Triffids Wyndham, Chocky tells the tale of a young boy becoming friends with an alien entity that has taken up residence in his consciousness (which should be safe territory for the man who directed E.T.).

It was previously turned into a TV series which aired in the UK in 1984 (and incidentally scared the bejesus out of this writer).

There's no word yet on a start date, but with director's proposed Tintin trilogy hitting a financial snag, there's a good chance that Chocky will be Spielberg's next project.

Intresting times for the Beard. He's made what many consider a misstep in trying to revive the Indy franchise, and he's been turned down by one studio, for a action/adventure franchise no less.

It may turn out well. Years ago, when a studio turned something down, that meant something. Now that marketing departments are running the show, I often wonder how many great ideas are rejected, so this may actually turn out very well. If Spielberg is interested in it, I'd give it a chance.

That's great...I hope he does the book justice. Loved the Wyndham book.

I can actually understand why Tintin was rejected. The film would have to be a huge hit to actually make the studio any money after Jackson and Spielberg's cuts. I would debate whether a Tintin movie would find such a huge audience.

I also didn't find the idea of adapting Tintin spectacular.

Hope Spielberg will sooner get to his Lincoln biopic!

wait, i thought Paramount is fully funding Tintin now.

Not an instant attention grabber for me.

I thought he was going to do Chucky, only you had misspelled it. :(
