Standardized Test Bias?

To begin with, the schools get graded based on the performance of the students on the test. If most of the students pass the test with awesome scores then the school gets more money. If students do bad then the school gets crap.
They did the same thing to the schools in my area. Frankly, I always thought it was an ass-backwards way to run things. The school that scores higher gets more money, but the school that scores lower (the school that clearly needs the extra money to better educate its students) gets bupkis. It makes no sense. They should give the low-scoring school more money, so they can fix their problems and catch up to the better schools. But they don't.

And nobody can tell me jack-diddly about race or culture being a factor. I went to a high school where there were barely any white or black kids. Nearly everyone was Asian. Our total math scores sucked.

I graduated high school before Memphis got some graduation test.

The only "standardized test" I took was the ACT and I got a 25 the only time I took it.

My grades were all over the book, including an F in Speech Class since I didn't say a word.

I feel the same way about gender and economic status as well.

When I read the title of the thread I thought about: A new standard bias range for all tube amplifiers, from EL34's to KT90's.

Spoons, you have no idea how many things went through my mind when I thought you invented some kind of super Guitar Amplifier. :trans:

I can't wait for all these race based threads to dissapear after this month is over...

:o

That's just ridiculous.

Hey! I thought you were a Microbiologist, not a physicist!

I live in Miami and in the state of Florida they have a test called the FCAT. If you want to graduate from high school YOU HAVE to pass that exam. I took the test and it was easy. However, I still hate that test. Why? Well, I hate it for several reasons. To begin with, the schools get graded based on the performance of the students on the test. If most of the students pass the test with awesome scores then the school gets more money. If students do bad then the school gets crap. So, what happens is that the school's main focus is that darn test! They focus WAY too much on it and its getting in the way of real learning! You take the test in 10th grade. And, I hated 10th grade because of that damn FCAT. Instead of actually learning something we spent half the year preparing for the test. Talk about a waste of time, huh? Then, the biggest insult came my senior year. I had to re-take my SATs. I did AWESOME on the verbal section. I got above average in fact. Math, however, has ALWAYS been my weak subject. I did horribly on the math section, so I knew I needed help. The school offered free tutoring for poor kids. And, can you believe that there was not ONE SINGLE tutor for the SAT? Like 99% of tutoring was for FCAT. It just pissed me off so much.

Have the same thing here--AIMS. But, we were able to throughly make fun of it at our school, when the Drama program did this event called Friday Night Live (basically a school version of SNL) where we switched the "M" with a "D," and basically made a PSA about the dangers of the AIDS. :woot:

It's just as prominent during the rest of the year, you just noticing it moreso now, baby cakes. :o

I'm actually trying to steer this thread away from race and focus more on the gender and economic status aspects. Me creating this thread really had nothing to do with BHM. Maybe I should have waited *shrug*

How did I miss this???

Anywho, have we decided that the real problem is 'culturally and economically' bias. Because I believe that's how it was originally intended.

If so, then I don't think anyone could post a real arguement against it.

no ways, three raced based threads all within the same week, how very convienient...

threads normally go through phases, religion, abortion, child abuse, advice, xmas, race, politics. it's merely the season for this one due to influences of other threads also influenced by real life events (black history month).

if it's just as prominent, please show me the 156 race related thread produced over 2006 :)

heck, i'll go easy, why not 78?

^This isn't a race thread. I'm still waiting for all the women to chime in and say whether or not they've felt like a man would have done better on a test. Poor people as well.

maybe not in a concious sense but definitely in your subconscience.

if you wish to steer it, i suggest editing your initial post.

however by doing so, the thread then becomes incredibly obvious with 'yes, tests are standardised' being the only real answer and makes the need for discussion really quite redundant.

You know what's in my subconscience now? Professor X, is that you? :p

If the answer is yes, I'd like to hear examples to back it up.

the hype doesn't have the best demographic if you wish to subject poor people for your poll.

We've got a recently homeless Hypester here.

a simple example would be setting a test in a language that not all people will be fluent in, so instead of testing the ability of one's maths knowledge, the ability for someone to actually interpret teh question then comes into play thus not giving the fairest representation of their intelligence in that field.

certain examples could be like when my friend went to france and had to do his engineering exams in french, they are hard enough to understand when in english, i couldn't even begin to describe how hard they would be in french.

i guess the same could be applied to migrants of people who come into from other countries to study in regions where english is the predominant language and their home country has its own predominant national/regional dialect.

would this example suffice?

A language barrier is a bit too extreme. I'll give an example of a question removed from the IQ exams because they caused too much trouble:

Q: If somebody younger than you were to attack you, would you fight back or walk away?

Most MALES and MINORITIES and LOWER CLASS people opted to fight back.
Most FEMALES and WHITE FOLK and UPPER MIDDLE CLASS people would walk away.

you can't sample a single person, that's bad statistical planning.

you're back peddling with a vengeance:heart:

Haha, I haven't really said anything. I asked a question and you called my thread redundant or incorrectly phrased. Now i'm attempting to explain it to you.

i don't get how this answer would have a reflection on one's IQ?

besides, there is a whole load of socio-economic backgrounds that have need to be considered here.

ask that question in Nigeria, and 90% of all people will say fight back due to an age based hierachy of respect that is bred into the nationals and respect for elders.

I don't see since there isn't a right or wrong answer how your background can make you get it wrong (since it's only an opinion) which is what your thread is about right, having people not being able to answer questions based on their background?

Yeah, this is the kind of evidence I was looking for  There's a ton to support cultural/racial bias but the gender/class bias seems to have gone unexplored.

As far as the IQ test; it wouldn't be a matter of right/wrong but the option of walking away would be worth more points. I've heard strong arguments that the SATs for example are subject to all 3 biases in question. As a black, middle class male; I didn't feel like I was better/worse suited to do well on that test than any woman, Arab, or bum in the world.

...

That sounds like the, I think its now called, the TAKS in Texas. It seemed every thing was geared up towards passing that test. I thought it was a snap when I took it as a junior, but it is wrong to base pass/fail high school based on one test.

Not surprised. George W. Bush was the Governor of Texas and his brother Jeb was the Governor of Florida.

Standardized testing puts too much emphasis on traditional learning modes and left brained intelligence while ignoring right brained. In other words, Picasso and Beethoven would flunk.
