Break out the bug spray! Sony Pictures Über-producer Neal Moritz has decided that the time has come to reboot Paul Verhoeven's 1997 fascist classic Starship Troopers.

He has assigned the script to screenwriters Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz, who, among other things, wrote Thor and X-Men: First Class, as well as many episodes of the TV shows Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Fringe. Of course, they also wrote Agent Cody Banks, which makes one think that Frankie Muniz could be the perfect former child star to take over the Neil Patrick Harris role.

A new Starship Troopers follows remake plans for Verhoeven's Total Recall and RoboCop. How long until his Basic Instinct and Showgirls get updated? Come to think of it, we could totally see Frankie Muniz in both of those, too

This won't end well, IMO. Voerhoeven's film has aged extremely well.

Will they have the powers suits in the first film this time around and maybe the Skinnies alien race, shown in the animated series?

Starship Troopers is a masterpiece of satire and one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. I hope this remake burns in development hell for eternity.

Well, the movie's just 14 years old. And I doubt they will really make it true to Heinlein's book this time. No way in Hollywood. Totally different ideology.

I think it's too early for a remake for a movie that's been out for 14-15 years. Hollywood is definitely running out of ideas.

Even in the remake, they'll still make the main character a white guy, I bet.

Why? This is worse than the Akira project.
My feelings on Akira are mixed. I hate what they're doing to this great property; on the other hand, if you criticize Akira for whitewashed casting, you might as well do the same thing to The Departed and The Magnificent Seven. Akira is basically being "moved" to a different time and place, so the changes make sense, even though the movie will be very bad from what I can tell.

Whereas Starship Troopers, and also a movie like 21, is not transplanted to a new place, so there was no reason to replace the Asian men with white guys, other than the fact that left-liberal Hollywood still harbours resentment and disgust towards Asian and Asian-American men.

I'm just waiting for Saban and 20th Century Fox to announce the inevitable remake of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, since Neal Moritz is cannibalizing late '90s properties for remakes.

... and sad that this remake won't have that gratuitous shower scene.

I wonder if they'll cast Neil Patrick Harris again.

Unless this is a more faithful adaptation of the book I really see no point. It's aged well.

I would actually like too see a loyal adaptation of the book just to compare it side by side with the 90's movie.

But remaking Paul Verhoeven's version? You won't improve it so your wasting everyone's time. That movie is the perfect allegory for the War on Terror and has the right tone, gore and humor for what it's trying to convey.

Agreed. No reason to remake the Verhoeven version....but I would like to see something closer to the book this time.

Why would you specifically remake the Verhoeven film? There's an opportunity to make a different kind of movie, even if it isn't closer to the Heinlein novel, though I wish they would go a more loyal route.

WTF ?

I would rather see a sequel with the original cast back. The first one was great

There have already been 2 sequels and Casper Van Dien returned for one of them.

I just watched the third film yesterday. Fun Film!

I know that but it was just Casper. Bring them all back I say from the first one :o

The film aged very well, but the scriptwriter of the remake has pedigree

Ok, first I am entirely against this. But if it must happen, I have three words:

CVD FOR ZIM!!!!
