Sci-Fi Starship Troopers Remake Is in the Works

I want to remake Austin Powers, but more grounded. ;)

Ha! I want to remake Babe: Pig in the City but this time Babe is a hog and the city is the red light district of New York. (I'm just kidding, in case you couldn't tell)

Do you remember a couple of years after the Matrix everyone was raving about wire fighting then suddenly EVERY movie needed wirefighting? That was a right laugh.

What young actors do you wanna see in the remake/reboot?

Wait, don't tell me! Only unknowns, right?

I really don't see why the violence in the original would warrant an R-rating. Cut out the nudity and that movie could easily be pg-13 without any other changes.

I disagree with this. Even if you cut out all the glorious nudity, there's still some very graphic violence in the film. People are torn apart, stabbed by the bug thorns, blown up, and shot in some cases. Blood flows pretty freely in the movie

Aaron Johnson, Emma Watson, Josh Hutcherson, AnnaSophia Robb, Freddie Highmore?
Or an older cast, born early to mid 80s?

"Starship Troopers" Remake Changes Tone

By Garth Franklin Friday January 3rd 2014 04:10PM
The proposed new adaptation of Robert Heinlen's sci-fi novel "Starship Troopers" is apparently moving ahead.
"Thor" and "X-Men: First Class" scribe Zack Stentz was recently asked how the film's script is progressing and what sort of tone it would have. He responded it will be "less a satire & more an actual adaptation of the Heinlein novel. An Officer & a Gentleman in power armor." Stentz previously compared the new version's tone with that of "Minority Report".
Heinlein's novel, first published in 1959, was politically controversial for its time. It, and the previous 1997 film, followed a futuristic military unit as they progress from recruit to infantry to ranking officers against the backdrop of an interstellar war between mankind and a giant arachnoid species.
However, Paul Verhoeven's film took a completely different approach to the patriotic and pro-militarism material - turning his adaptation into a satirical action film that heavily sent up fascism.
'Troopers' marks the third remake of a Verhoeven sci-fi classic in recent years following 2012's "Total Recall" and this year's "Robocop".

I'm shocked he didn't say "We're not remaking the previous movie. We're adapting the novel" only to remake the previous movie. (Total Recall)

Yeah, that's the go-to claim when doing another film based on a book, especially if the first one was successful critically and/or financially.

Christ did I enter a weird bizarre world where people actually liked that movie?

Though I love the animated series they did

Huh? Starship Troopers is a classic, lots of people loved it never mind liked it.

Starship Troopers is an underrated satirical gem. Plus it more or less predicted the war on terror to a T.

Yeah, the original becomes increasingly relevant the further along America goes IMO.

ive never seen a movie that polarizes a group of people as much as this one. people either love it or hate it.

Paul Verhoeven was asked about this possibility recently.

He said that given the great success of the Robocop and Total Recall remake, a remake of Starship Troopers sounds like a great idea.

:woot:

Miscellaneous thoughts:

1) When I watched Starship Troopers in theatres in 1997 I was ~14, and I had no idea it was a satire. I took it straight, and I loved it. I don't think I've rewatched it since, but I'd like to, given that the satire is apparently amazing and I hardly remember the movie at all.

2) Denise Richards was hot in the movie.

3) I would ordinarily be unexcited for such a remake, let alone something true to the writings of Robert Heinlein, but ... Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller are very, very good writers. They wrote the better Thor movie, First Class which is the greatest of all post 2008 comic book movies, and several episodes of the glorious Sarah Connor Chronicles.

I wonder if he is getting royalties up the wazoo for the remakes or not.

I doubt it. Neither is based on his interpetation of the source material so he wouldn't be entitled to anything.
