Starz Original Series - Spartacus: Vengeance

As much as i love Andy, Liam isn't doing as bad as some are making him out to be.

I found that Andy's speech to Batiatus before he killed him in the final ep of season one to be very weak.

Liam, seems to be much more believable at delivering speeches that ignite the slaves; but then again, Andy's Spartacus wasn't a leader until the end of season 1, so we'll never know. I do believe that if Andy were still here, his Spartacus would have felt just as different as Liams does, due to the drastically different circumstances they are all now in....

Really?

Andy put so much emotion and passion in that scene and it clearly shows. I just watched it again two night ago. I have yet to see Liam pull off the same impassioned believability as a leader of gladiators and freed slaves in his perfomance so far.

Dustin Clare has been in two episodes and he's pretty much overshadowing Liam on all fronts.

I'm not hating on Liam, I'm just not impressed by what I've seen and I'm still hoping for him to wow me.

...finally got to see friday night's episode. It was pretty good.

Finally this season is picking up!

Gannicus totally put spartacus into the shadows, everytime he is on screen it feels like he is the principal character of the series.
I hope we see him again and that he doesn't die (why not a spin off series in the future)
But for "new spartacus guy" sake they should keep Gannicus away.

Ashur is becoming very interesting, and as much as I'd like to see him dead I hope it doesn't happen too soon.

And also, I think I'm gonna puke if I see another Crixus/Naevia drama speech !
Give us back Crixus the warrior please.

I've finally seen the most recent episode, and my god, the difference between Gannicus and Spartacus is startling. Dustin's on screen presence is undeniable in every scene. He carries every bit of the character's strengths over from Gods of the Arena. Liam's portrayal of his character in comparison comes off stiff, passionless and uninteresting. At first, I wasn't so sure people were being fair to him when comparing him to Andy, but there's no denying that he simply isn't the same level of actor that Whitfield was. The show doesn't help this fact by giving Spartacus nothing to do every episode.

Sad but true. I have been enjoying the show so much more since his return. I hope he becomes a permanent member of the cast. Sneak Peek for next week shows he's not off the show just yet. :D

Gannicus as a permanent cast member would basically turn this show from being called Spartacus to Gannicus, lol.

Spartacus has always been more of a lean body guy than a ripped one like Gannicus or Crixus. Even with Andy's Spartacus, I don't think he was soo ripped like Gannicus. I agree that Liam needs to bulk up more but I don't see it as a big problem. I've started to get used to Liam's style and the way he delivers his speeches. I'm starting to like him more and more as the season progresses. I did love Andy's Spartacus speech in the season 1 finale though. I thought he delivered it well. I think there would still be a difference in Spartacus whether Andy or Liam played the role. The cricumstances are different and it calls for the character to be written differently than from season 1.

It's one thing to be lean, but Spartacus looks almost no bigger than some of the house slaves.

they should be getting smaller now, as they are no longer training 23 hours a day.

Seeing Spartacus' flat body with Gannicus looking ripped in the background was an eyepopper. Hopefully Liam can bulk up.

I like Liam, but i noticed this as well in this past ep. Liam's chest looked as flat as a board as though this was one of the first scenes they shot of him, as he's looked a tad bigger in other previous.

Anyhow, just watched the last ep and loving it!

Glaber is turning out to be a great antagonist this season compared to the handful of scenes he had in season 1.

That elite group Arshur is putting together is :wow:.

I hope both Crixus and Onameus snap out of their zombie like state they've been in this season.

Agreed, if you look at the first group of episodes of blood and sand, it just makes me wonder where Crixus and Onameus' passion have gone. They would be so helpful right now.

I think it's somewhat understandable that their spirit is somewhat sapped, considering that they've spent the majority of their time in captivity. Now they're pariahs and taking stock of their own lives and living by an entirely different mantra to the rest of the world. Only several months before Vengeance, they were resigned and even content in slavery. The whole world is changing for them. Things will pick up when they're on their feet.

I think once they'll both get over their issues with Naevia and Gannicus soon enough. Especially with the kind of trouble I'm sure Ashur and his men will cause.

As far as speeches goes, I think Andy and Liam both showed passion. To me, Andy came off as more relieved that he achieved his goal and was ready to move on. Anyone else can follow if they want. With Liam, he's now pretty much a military leader who has to tell them what to do and keep up moral every once in a while.

I just wished the actress that had played Naevia originally was still in the show. When the new Naevia is in a scene with Crixus she's feel like a completely different character. I know she's changed emotionally and pschologically but the appearance is really making the believability that it's the same person, a hard sell.

Btw, i'm glad Ashur put Lucretia in her place.

The new Naevia I do find distracting. I can't imagine her having lived through GotA and B&S :/

...you do realize how bad this sounds right?

Put her in her place by raping her?

I know Lucretia is evil and she's done as equally terrible if not worse . . . but still.

Yeah, I wasn't a fan of the rape scene.

Looking forward to the next episode, but extremely disappointed with who they cast as the female warrior.

It's official, Spartacus is the worst character on this show.

This was the first episode that I really bought Liam as Spartacus. After he chopped that guys face off the way he growled that the new recruits could fight with them or get the hell out was really great.

I laughed when he looked down at Agron. The dark brother line from Lugo or whatever his name was and when Ashur poked Lucretia and revealed he got the wig from a dead person were funny too.

Nice to see Naevia being eager while training. Felt sorry for Ilythia's slave and that prostitute just being used to set an example.

His character doesn't do anything to drive the overall plot of the show like it did in season one. Spartacus just kind of walks around stone faced, making speeches, and pulling out his sword every now and then to act threateningly. There are no nuances to his character at all. Outside of the season opener, the writers have done nothing to make this character the least bit engaging. All you have to do is contrast his character with all the characters on the show. Gannicus is really the only character anyone should care about at this point, and he's just a guest star.

Another great episode. Sooo glad they didnt kill Illythia off like I feared was going to happen. Im really hoping Lucretia gets her revenge on Ashur and we can finally see him get his. Naevia was finally bearable in this episode since she didnt spend the whole time crying so its nice to see her toughen up.

i also think that the actor is just much better. not only the writers who have failed to give spartacus more, but the actor choosen for the role is just weak. lucky that there are many other characters who are far more interesting than the lead character..

I have no problems with his character at the moment. He doesn't really have any issues that he has to deal with on a personal level other than Glaber. If anything, just trying to keep the whole group as one seems to be his biggest problem at the moment. Though, I guess that may have been resolved somewhat for now.

Maybe if they had made it last for more than one episode, we could see more of a struggle for him when it comes to controlling the group having people get over their issues. So many things are happening, maybe the writers feel there's no time for it. Or just like to leave the drama aspect of things to the other characters.

Yes, this season seems to be much less about Spartacus, and more about develeoping the co-stars- hence the ep before last which featured Illythia. I enjoyed this past ep.

I don't see Glaber making into past season 2, now that just about everyone is plotting against him.

Gannicus sure gave Glaber an answer, even though it wasnt the one Glaber was looking for!

I was surprised Gannicus went with that route instead of killing Glaber like Lucretia wanted. I was hoping he would join Lucretia as her right hand mand and get rid of Ashur for her.
