Comics Steve Ditko Documentary?

Wow, this movie sounds really interesting
I'm definitely gonna look it up

I've followed Stan Lee's career very closely, and dont recall him taking full credit for any of his early work at Marvel, other than conceptually.

Also; Stan was an employee of Marvel, just like Steve, Jack, and all the others...he wasnt responsible for "paying his fellow co-creators what they were due"...

Yeah- Stan always acknowledges that he is co-creator of these characters, but it always seems as though he is doing them a favour on his part by going w/ the co creator tag. For example- he will be talking about Spidey in an interview or documentary and will then keenly stress that it was himself who thought of the idea of Spider-Man, while Steve drew the costume and did the rest, making out like thinking of the initial idea is more valid than actually fleshing out the character.

Comics are a visual medium, and to me there seems to be quite a bit of evidence to suggest that Ditko did a lot more than Stan on the initial run of issues towards creating Spider-Man and his supporting cast. Plus Stan’s recollection of stuff always seems to change in interviews, he himself noting he has a notoriously bad memory. Since this is the case and his co creators are dead or out of the loop, there is no one there to correct him.

As for Kirby getting shafted- after his death numerous pieces of his art were illegally sold by Marvel for the benefit of the company. These pieces were owed to his family, but Marvel just sold them anyway. Considering we are talking about circa 1994 and Stan was pretty high up in Marvel at the time (I forget the specific position), it is pretty reasonable to assume that he could have corrected this situation if he saw fit.

Ok fine. But that wasnt Stan's fault. Stan himself got screwed over by Marvel's publisher Martin Goodman (a cousin through marriage, iirc), in regards to a verbal contract for 15 Million Dollars promised (iirc), when Goodman sold the company. Stan answered to Martin, and the next group who bought Marvel, (Cadense Industries, iirc) AS AN EMPLOYEE. i have no idea why people think Stan somehow could have waved his magic wand and solved Kirby's and whoever else's problems with the company. They had no more loyalty to Stan than they did to Jack, or anyone ELSE at Marvel. By 1994 Stan had very little to do with Marvel himself. He wasnt even in New York where the Kirby's lived. He had long since moved to Hollywood, Ca. in hopes to getting Marvel some tv and movie deals.

Furthermore; Jack used to claim pretty much full creator status over Fantastic Four, until Roy Thomas printed the original 1st page script for FF #1 in his fanzine, Alter Ego, which clearly showed Stan's notes to Jack in the margins, proving the concept was HIS.


And what "evidence" is there to support Ditko's claims any more than Stan's claims? Roy Thomas reported that everyone used to be "walking on eggs" around Ditko, because of his combative attitude...

You mentioned you've watched a promotional copy of this documentary? I have a question for you.

Is it true that during the interview, when pressed on the true origins of Spidey, for about twenty seconds he drops the public Uncle Stan "mask" that we've all come to know and love?

If so... what does he say!?!

Wossy is a good choice for host- he has a lively but likable style- perhaps just the kind to bring Ditko out of his recluse? One can dream/

I know Stan moved out west in the early eighties, but I’m sure that in the late 80’s or early 90’s he gained a position pretty high up in the company, like President, or something. A position that he would later leave due to him not really enjoying the amount paperwork involved.

In terms of Stan being able to help Kirby’s family out after his death- you would have thought Stan would have had some significant influence over some of the top suits at Marvel especially when dealing w/ the subject of art work owed to Kirby’s relatives that was produced during the time Stan and Jack collaborated on work for Marvel.

Ok maybe w/ ‘evidence’ I got a little carried away. I was just referring to the interviews I have read w/ Ditko, pertaining to it sounding like he came up w/ the majority of the characters and storylines.

Yep Wossy is a good choice - he has a good comic knowledge, apparently a massive comic collection - he has a room, shelved wall to wall just with nothing but comics, plus he used to co-own a comic shop in London.
 
Actually, 'Wossy,' was the whole reason that this happened.

Yeah, Captain Stacy likes it too, I have long pondered getting it tattooed onto my person. It is probably the greatest emblem ever created.

Aloha,
We as Spider-Man fans, will have to accept the fact that the co creator and artist to Spidey is a recluse. He has strong philosophical beleifs that he is going to the grave with. As much as I respect him and all of his work, thank goodness for a Stan Lee.In many team ups there is a introvert and an extrovert. By that design, the extrovert will get more publicity and name recognition.Stan Lee was the Original HYPESTER.Ditko was and is the reclusive introverted artist.We can only hope that he is writting some sort of autobiography or journal of his thoughts on all that has happened to him over the years with Marvel and Spider-Man.
