Used to watch the TV show it's based on with my aunt. This is going to be great.

Viola Davis will star in Steve McQueen's heist thriller Widows.

McQueen and Gone Girl author-screenwriter Gillian Flynn co-wrote the script for the New Regency project, which centers on four women who team up to complete a heist.

The story, based on the 1980s British TV series, starts out with a group of armed robbers being killed during a robbery. Their widows then decide to finish the job their spouses started.
The project has been in the works for some time now: McQueen first attached to the project after winning the Oscar for best picture for 12 Years a Slave in 2014. Widows will be his first feature film since helming the slave drama that won three Oscars, including the nod for best supporting actress for Lupita Nyong'o.
The heist thriller will be a bit of a departure for McQueen, known for his heavy dramas like 12 Years a Slave, Shame and Hunger, but McQueen has been a fan of the British TV series and its female empowerment story since he watched the show in his youth. The film adaptation will be contemporary and set in a U.S. city. The script calls for four female leads: two black, one white and one Latina.
Iain Canning and Emile Sherman, who won a best-picture Oscar for The King's Speech, are producing alongside McQueen. Film4 is co-financing with New Regency.

Can't wait to see who else they got cast

Sounds cool. Always love McQueen's work.

I keep thinking this is such a weird one. I just didn't expect McQueen's follow up to 12 Years to be something so genre-y.

It's a passion project of sorts. He grew up watching the TV show the film is based on.

Moonlight star Andre Holland joins Viola Davis in Steve McQueen’s "Widows" (EXCLUSIVE) http://bit.ly/2jN5MHM

Andre Holland is in negotiations to join Viola Davis in the New Regency’s heist thriller “Widows,” directed by Steve McQueen.
Cynthia Erivo, known for Broadway’s “The Color Purple” revival, is also on board.
“Gone Girl” screenwriter and novelist Gillian Flynn will write the script with McQueen

Nice. I've had my eye on the guy since The Knick. He's on kind of a hot streak right now.

Btw, is this expected to come out at the same time as Ocean's 8? Would be an interesting addition to the recent trend of two movies with similar premises competing with each other.

No date on this yet but it will be a 2018 release. Same year as Ocean's 8,which has a summer release date currently. But I think they will move.

I'm glad McQueen is doing this because for how great his films are, they depress the f*** out of me.

I remember when Andre Holland was just the black best friend on the short lived, but decent, Friends With Benefits on NBC. Now look at him

I've only seen one of his films (12 Years), but I never assumed he only wanted to make a certain type of film. From what I've heard one of his films was about potato famine in Ireland, the other about a sex addict. So he seems to be pretty varied. The only question is what part Fassbender will play. Maybe the white lady in the crew...? :hehe:

Hunger was about an IRA member going on a hunger strike in prison...

He talked about making a movie on the Brixton riots. That seemed, to me, a more natural follow up to the kind of material Hunger, Shame and 12 Years had.

Didn't expect a remake/re-imagining of a 2002 mini series featuring Brooke Shields.

I'm excited for this, though. McQueen is a fascinating director and, like you said, seems to have versatility that could go beyond what I imagined.

Elizabeth Debicki to co-star with @violadavis in Steve McQueen's "Widows" (EXCLUSIVE) http://bit.ly/2kPMlOE

Elizabeth Debicki is in talks to co-star opposite Viola Davis and Cynthia Erivo in the New Regency heist thriller “Widows,” directed by Steve McQueen.

Debicki would play one of the widows.

Cool.

Whenever I see Elizabeth Debicki I think Cate Blanchett + Mia Wasikowska.

McQueen and Rodriguez. There's an interesting pairing.
