The Next Big Thing?

Well some of you probably have watched the pilot from Netflix or on the internet but it premieres tomorrow night on NBC and tonight on CTV in Canada. It will reair on the American Bravo channel, Wednesday nights.

Since CTV airs a simulcast of the popular CBS progam CSI: Miami on Mondays at 10:00 PM (EST), they will be airing Studio 60 on Sundays at 10:00 PM (EST).

Character abstracts
Major roles

Danny Tripp (Bradley Whitford) is a director who takes over show-running duties with Matt Albie, his longtime friend. He has a history of drug problems, and worked on the show four years prior before leaving with Matt Albie over disagreements with network executives.

Matt Albie (Matthew Perry) is a former writer for Studio 60 who is asked to return when executive producer Wes Mendell is fired. Matt has recently ended a relationship with Studio 60 star Harriet Hayes.

Jordan McDeere (Amanda Peet) is the recently-promoted president of Studio 60's fictional network NBS (National Broadcasting System). She is described in the pilot as an "instantly likable 30-something" and "someone whom every man's wife can find an irrational reason to hate". She is responsible for the hiring of Danny and Matt.

Harriet Hayes (Sarah Paulson) is an "effortlessly sexy", "multi-talented" performer and one of the "Big Three" main stars of Studio 60. Harriet is a committed Christian and has recently ended a romantic relationship with Matt. Hayes is reportedly based on West Wing alumna Kristin Chenoweth, whom Sorkin once dated.

Tom Jeter (Nate Corddry) is another of the show's main stars. According to the pilot, "when he's not crafting a joke in his head, he's not sure what he's supposed to be doing".

Simon Stiles (D. L. Hughley) is the final member of the "Big Three". He attended the Yale School of Drama. Tom and Simon are united by their "mutual respect, their dedication to their show and nothing else".

Jack Rudolph (Steven Weber) is the chairman of the fictional network NBS and Jordan's boss. He fired Matt and Danny from Studio 60 four years prior to their taking it back over again.

Cal Shanley (Timothy Busfield) is the control-room director of Studio 60. He has two kids whom he's putting through private school. In the pilot, he allows Wes to rant unscripted for fifty-three seconds on live television, despite threats from network executive Jerry. Busfield had a recurring guest role on The West Wing and will also serve as producing director on the show.

Jerry Jones (Michael Stuhlbarg) works for NBS in the role of network censor. He is in control of Standards and Practices and is responsible for cutting a controversial sketch. The cut results in an on air rant from furious and resigned Wes.

Supporting roles

Ron Oswald (Evan Handler) and Ricky Beck (Carlos Jacott) are the current co-executive producers of Studio 60. In the pilot, they are portrayed as poor writers, "hacks," and command little professional respect from the stars of the show. Matt refers to them as Beavis and Hackboy. They are allegedly planning to take control of the show.

Wes Mendell (Judd Hirsch) is the former executive producer of Studio 60. His power is dwindling and he's becoming furious with the network for bowing down to the FCC and religious groups.

Wilson White (Ed Asner) is the Chairman of Tunney Media Group, parent company of the National Broadcasting System

Anyone going to watch this and Tina Fey's 30 Rock? SNL has made sure Aaron Sorkin would have trouble talking to anyone involved with SNL.

I will be watching 30 Rock and Studio 60.
Btw, which one of these shows had Alec Baldwin in it?

30 Rock, I believe it starts this or next Tuesday.

I will be watching Studio 60 too. They have a great cast

Studio 60 will probably be the best thing on TV this season. Tommy Schlamme, Aaron Sorkin, and a stellar cast--can't wait!

By the way, who else here is a fan of The West Wing

I dunno, this could be a big hit or it could be one of those Arrested Development situations, where critics go nuts for a show but average audience doesn´t get interested. I´m not sure the backstage of an SNL-like show is gonna be that much of a catch.

Well most West Wing fans from the Sorkin-era atleast will probably check it out. You do make a good arguement, sure the pilot may be interesting but how do you fill the remainder of season. I've read 'Live From New York' a massive book that detailed the 30 years of SNL; there is plenty of material to make good TV. SCTV's book details stories that could be adapted for Studio 60. Plus Sorkin has already created two television shows, and is such a great writer he'll probably do a better job than Tina Fey. Its a (Hollywood) workplace television show that has the cred that SportsNight didn't.

The opening monolouge of Wes Mendell (Judd Hirsch), I can't remember a better rant (real or fiction) on television. I didn't even see Chandler Bing on the screen, Matthew Perry was that good. Perfect direction, the cast is great, there are funny moments but I'm sure people were expecting more, only one bit of eye rolling when David Spade's whipping boy from the Capital One ads showed up as a drunk lazy castmember but other than that I had no problems with the show. It left me wanting more, which is what a excellent pilot should do (Vanished....).

Three 6 Mafia appeared as the musical guests and one half of Filliam H. Muffman was the host. I've read that Mark Whalberg and Lauren Graham will appear in the future. It was great to see NBC not go the 'fake celebrity' route and actually have Felicity Huffman promote Desperate Housewives and have a brief scene that takes aim at the monolouges we're all too familiar with on SNL. At the start of the year Nate Corddry was walking around in his underwear for The Daily Show, now he's in a pretty good role on a show that should be the show that everyone talks about. CBS and NBC were in a bidding war for this show, if NBC didn't get it who knows how pitiful their future could've been.

I've watched the first 2 episodes of Studio 60 now and love it. We tried watching 30 Rock, but turned it off after 10-15 minutes, it just wasn't funny to us.

Can't wait, I've been waiting for the 10-11 shows for a LONG time! It's great that they all premiere this week.

MONDAY- Studio 60

TUESDAY- Smith

WEDNESDAY- Kidnaped.... saw the Pilot. This show is great and definitely stands out alot more than 'Vanished', if you thought 'Vanished' kept you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. Wait until you see this pilot. And the ending will have you throw your remote control at the TV- literally, that's how abrupt (in a good way) it is. Definitely want to see more.

THURSDAY- Shark- I saw this Pilot too, don't like shows such as Law and Order but this show kind of stuck with me. Interesting characters and great acting.

So, all in all, great to see 10-11 shows are finally here! Starting tonight with Studio 60.

Favorite laugh in the promo is in the meeting, forgot the line- but "we will stop being childish and immature and start being more professional and" his girlfriend (?) barges in "starting in just a couple of minutes, excuse me..." or something like that. That gets me every time. Can't wait to see the Pilot.

oh matthew perry rulz, so im watching that one, and my girl Lauren Graham will be on 2 episodes so thats another excuse

I´d love to see them tackle the Andy Kaufman thing, where the comedian was deemed "too eccentric" for the audience and Lorne Michaels actually fought for him and even made a poll to see if people wanted him on the show but the poll actually ended up getting him fired from SNL.

I watched the pilot a few weeks back, and enjoyed it. Not sure if the series is going to have enough to hold my attention right the way through however. I have a very limited TV series genre that I tend to stick with.

I'll be watching Studio 60 tonight

It looks interesting but I don't really watch TV much anymore.

Great, great Pilot episode. Definitely my second/third favorite new show.

Never saw the West Wing, but I was a Sports Night fan. Which is a somewhat similar concept, just it was behind the scenes of sports shows.

So, yeah- this show is really good.

best show i've seen in a while. could grow to become my favorite.

Was freaking sweet. And the monologue at the begining was right. Either the shows are profane for the sake of profane or lack the balls to use profanity to do something brilliant. Or hell, use anything to do something brilliant.

Hollywood Reporter has the ratings report. The Show got 13.4 million viewers last night. Not a bad start, but shows usually drop in their second and third weeks.

Considering all of the hype, I would think that NBC was hoping for atleast a 15mil start, these numbers have to be somewhat disappointing. Still some shows grow and if the show stays where it is, it would still be a mild success.

I didn't watch it last night by the way. I was watching CSI Miami, but I did turn to it for a few minutes, it seemed rather self important to me, but then again it is a Sorkin product.

I loved it! It felt kind like Sorkin decided to re-invent Sports NighT (which is not a bad thing). I really hope this time it will fly. Sorkin has alot more St. Cred. this time around. Plus Matthew Perry rulez. I really hope that like Seinfeld. The Cast of friends don't run into trouble seperating themselves, because he was great in this.

It´s not an exceptional start, but it´s decent. If it doesn´t drop too much should get a second season.

It has been on Netflix and online for awhile now so who knows how that altered ratings in anyway. The second or third episodes could get higher. NBC is in fourth, they'll galdy take those numbers.

It was very good. I think it has the potential to be a great series. And it should be by far the best new show this season. Solid casting. Perry and Whitford play well off each other.

Anyone know if the pilot is still up online anywhere? I went to Youtube and apparently it was removed. I planned to watch it during its premiere night but it toally slipped my mind. :(
