u guys can laugh all u want but u know im right...the lex luthor in smallville is way better than the one in the superman the movie...lana is also more good looking...lois is way better looking than the one in the superman the movie...and tom welling is way more talented than christopher reeves. plus he looks more like clark and doesnt look so geeky

Whoa. . . easy there. . . If you're comparing content between Smallville with Superman The Movie both are different concepts and "universes". I like Smallville but I'm aware it has nothing to do with the Donner films. It's a whole different concept.

As for your comparison between Christopher Reeve and Welling, you can't compare them. Reeve played both Clark Kent and Superman while Welling is playing a Pre-Superman Clark Kent which is very different from the "Metropolis CK".

If you don't like Christopher Reeve as Superman, that's your opinion, but most of us think of Christopher Reeve as a synonym for Superman.

Good for you.

Superman: The Movie and Smallville are uncomparable......

The thing with Smallville is, when they do something Superman " based ", it's actually pretty good, except not casting someone as Zod. I would love to see what the writers would do with a pure Superman story. The problem, however, is by having a 22 episode season, there is going to be a lot of filler, and alot of constant stop,go, and stop love stories, which do grow old. Lana should know everything by now, and mvoing into the role as Clark's confidant. Instead, she is hooking up with Lex, and probably should never speak to Clark again. Lana should have died in the 100th episode, it would have been Clark's Gwen Stacey moment. But now that storyline is shot to ****!!! I think Im one of the few true Superman fans who can enjoy Smallville, because I understand what the show is and what its trying to do!!!

Again, Id love to see what Gough and Miller would do with a pure, 100% Superman story!!!

Smallville sucks.

Superman the movie...good film for its time.

Chris Reeve = talent.

And that was the rebuttle speech by Mr. Kane.

...moving away from Smallville...

I would as an introduction to the character, both would be pretty good. I've yet to finish the SR novel, but Singer's characterization of the character seems quite good, and obviously a newcomer would be more inclined to watch a new movie rather than an old one.

With that said, STM is the origin of Superman. And it is, apparently, the set up for SR - but, at the same time, I go back to the age thing; STM has become quite dated, and there's probably quite a few people who'd be turned off by that.

So both are rather important, but probably due to STM's age, I'd go with SR for a new viewer. Although honestly, STAS probably stomps both films for an introduction piece.

I picked SR. I didn't read the other posts, so I don't know if my opinion has been stated yet. I feel that (if it is good) SR should be the jumping-off point. If new fans want to know more, then they can go back and watch STM and SII to see what inspired SR.

most non comic book fans think of superman and think of the old donner films. calling it "dated" its like calling the godfather movies "dated" or calling starwars "dated". Hell its like saying anything from the past is "Dated". Indiana Jones is "Dated" buy that regards to then folks. The original superman movie made you beleive a man could fly. The amazing john williams theme, that went on to become superman offical theme song. Hell Smallville uses the old superman movies as sort of a bible.

Superman: The Movie isn't dated like Star Wars and The Godfather are dated (I wouldn't call them dated at all, even). Star Wars, The Godfather, never had a character like Otis. A character who's only purpose was to be this goofy, comedic entity. Not to mention some of the crazier things that happen in the film; Superman spinning the world in reverse to turn back time, etc.

And beyond just the stuff inherent in the story, The film itself has become blurred, and is actually in some need of restoration - like Star Wars needed, and is now restored - much more so than The Godfather or Indiana Jones.

You are right - STM is a classic film that continues to be drawn upon again and again - because it is a classic film. The plot structure's great, the acting's fine, the Superman origin was probably done better in the film than it has even in the comics, but still, it has these overly-campy aspects in it that would turn off some new viewers. And that is why STM is dated, and Star Wars or The Godfather is not.

why are the trunks always so dark in that show?... I never did understand that.

True. Star Wars didn't get an equivalent to Otis until Episode 1.

UH...what? Sorry, but anti-signed.

Superman: The Movie would turn off alot of people away from Superman, alot of people I know got bored watchign it, i even do sometimes. I would suggest Supermn: The Animated Series, I don't really know. I would get them the comics proably.

What moments in STM do you think would "turn off" today's audiences? Where is the movie boring?

I'm not knocking your opinion...I'm just curious.

It's a tough competition.SR is the newest so I'd say that one, just because it is more modern with modern FX and actors. And if they liked SR then I'd show the older classics.
