Does anyone know if this is any good? its by Mark Verheiden and Ed Benes.

I've only readan issue of it myself (although I'm literally just ordering the TPB now), but the buzz for it seems to be very good, and I enjoyed the small bit I have read.

Does it collect several issues of SM or is it a standalone story?

It collects Superman #117, 121-125.
