How long does a movie have to be in theaters to tally up it's final box office totals?

Does it depend how well it does and manages to stay in the top 10, top 20?

What if a film opens in January and opens poorly but good word of mouth helps it first place months later?

Now this is only for United States totals, I don't care for foreign markets.

Until it's no longer in theaters.

Till the film is no longer in the theaters. Yes, it depends on WOM, and the competition. Normally you can tell when the film is released on dvd(or a few months after). (The US total)
