Backstory:
An Electromangetic Pulse (EMP) deactivates all electronic ground communications on the American mainland with an attack disguised as a long-range missile test conducted by the People's Republic of Korea. Simultaenously, North Korean military personnel invade major port cities along the West Coast of the United States via covertly operated cargo vessels.
Similar to the 1984 original film by the same name, several cities are also destroyed through nuclear attacks. After five years of poor international regulation of North Korea's nuclear program, the country produces several atomic warheads intended for combat. Targeted cities include, Seoul; in order to eliminate Allied opposition to the North's power in South Korea, Hong Kong, to halt Pacific commerce and create economic havoc.
One strike is attemped on Honolulu, Hawaii also. The missile shield designed by the United States proves to be a vital defensive tool after succesfully intercepting an actual long-range ICBM for the first time. Smuggled ICMBs are also uncovered and confiscated by Federal authorities before they can be assembled and detonated in Seattle and the Port of Los Angeles by Korean-American citizen terror cells directly employed by Kim Jung Il's regime.
While not as extensive and large as the scenario for World War III in the original film, a more realistically sized armed conflict ensues, as well as political motivations for the created violence. Kim Jung Il is in declining health over a top secret brain tumor, and at the same time, threatened with hostile takeover from his highest military officials. Before his death, he plans to fullful his family's long sought lust for revenge created from years of escalating tensions with the West dating back initation of the Korean War.
North Korea's armed forces occupy several ports and mainland major cities as far inland as Denver. This easy success is due to the delayed military response by American national guard units to the invading foreign forces. The conflict consumes a high school in a small, Colorado town. Clinging to their school's former mascot, the Wolverine, a dozen high school seniors form a guerilla resistance movement in the Rocky Mountains in order to aid in the fight against the occupying forces.
While the enemy's numbers are limited in comparison of the American resistance, Colorado's, as well as most other states are unable to compile enough operable military equipment to make for a sizeable counter attack for several weeks due to the strength of North Korea's surprise EMP attack. The Wolverines are one of the few groups mounting a signifcant fight.
The war is brief, only lasting a few months. Kim Jung Il's regime is defeated largely due to nuclear retaliation from a vengeful China onto the North's capital city, as well as the largest aerial bombardment campaign in American military history. In response, the conflict in America quickly comes to an end as national guard units soon overcome pockets of resistance. Those, of course not killed or captured by American forces, eventually commit mass suicide due to learning of news that Kim Jung Il and his family are murdered at the hands of a cou staged by his top military command. These military personnel are among the few citizens in North Korea to know their former "Dear Leader" is not a living god, and believe him to be an incompetent figure, too mentally unstable to lead their country rationally.
