THQ Struggling With PS3 Development, Cancels Destroy All Humans!

Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon is now an Xbox 360 exclusive. Shacknews confirmed today that the game that the PlayStation 3 version has been quietly canceled, with THQ spokespeople citing "development issues."

It's not the first time THQ has pointed to problematic PS3 development with Epic's Unreal Engine 3. Late last year, THQ delayed both Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon and Frontlines: Fuel of War, with the senior producer of the latter pointing to Unreal as part of the problem.

Frontlines producer Joe Halper told GameSpot then that "the Unreal Engine has some challenges with the PS3—you'll see with other developers—it's kind of a little late in the game with Epic, which is unfortunate." The PlayStation 3 version of Frontlines was ultimately canceled by THQ in January alongside the PlayStation 2 version of Destroy All Humans!: Big Willy Unleashed.

Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon will ship on the Xbox 360 on December 1 in North America.

According to Gabe Newell..

"Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There's nothing there that you're going to apply to anything else. You're not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they've created...I don't think they're going to make money off their box. I don't think it's a good solution."

When it comes to multiplat the ps3 has been the weakest link on a few games, some have been delayed because of it. Red Alert 3 for example.

"Red Alert 3, the first Red Alert game in seven years, is out now for PC with a 360 version due on November 14. Although the game was originally announced for PS3 as well, EA confirmed that version was "on hold" back in June, with EA Los Angeles producer Amer Ajami later telling us that Sony's console is "very exotic and tough to develop for"."

"He said: "When we announced Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 we announced there was a PS3 version, then we decided to go on the record and say that we've suspended it to make sure that RA3 was able to come out to the level of quality that it must adhere to to be called a C&C game. We've hit that mark, we've shipped the game. And you know what that means? That means there's another version left to be had. So there's definitely people working on a PS3 version and we'll be talking more about that later"

There's a big difference between what Gabe Newell says and what other companies are doing.

Gabe Newell and Valve downright refuse to develop for the PS3. They won't even try. Their excuse comes off as rather pathetic.

At least EA's C&C team and THQ have been trying with the PS3. With EA they're at least still making the PS3 version of Red Alert 3. And it is a shame that THQ is having troubles with the PS3, but at least they tried. Unlike Valve.

Unreal Engine 3 is too hard to develop for the PS3? Thats a poor excuse, especially considering the many games already released on the system that use it, like Bioshock, Unreal Tournament 3, Mirrors Edge, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, etc....

It's been reported plenty of times that the UT3 engine has issues with the PS3.

From someone who's been waiting for this game from a long time:

Destroy All Humans is a really fun, well made franchise.

Issues or not, his point was that if those games could be made, then why can't THQ get their game to work?

yeah it says more about the developers abilities more than the PS3 to me.

And you dont cancel a game a week before its about to be released. They probably stopped developing it for the PS3 a while back and only now making it official. I cant imagine, they'd be working on it this long, only to not decide to release it a few days before its due out

Now that I think about it, they did the same thing with the PS2 version of the last Destroy All Humans.

THQ is broke, so they'd rather cut their losses and only release one version of a game than invest more in releasing it across multiple platforms. Simply put, they can't afford to make a PS3 version at this point in time. They probably had to choose between making it 360 exclusive or not releasing it at all.

As was said right above you, they did make a PS3 version, it just isn't being released in NA.

Yeah, I just caught that... Of all the dumb luck. Well, at least PS3 is region free.

Yeah, they just shut down a lot of studios. It's not like they're making a bunch of bad games like Midway
