A teenage girl from Colorado Springs was shot and killed by her stepfather early this morning after being mistaken for a home invader.
The unidentified 14-year-old was apparently attempting to sneak back into her house after a night out when she was shot by her stepdad.
Local police say the man called 911 around 6 a.m. to report a burglary in progress. Officers responding to the scene found the injured teen in the basement.
She had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Scanner traffic suggest she may have also been shot in the stomach.
Emergency services rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
No arrests have been made at this time, and both the CSPD's Violent Crimes Unit and the District Attorney's office are continuing their investigations.

Makes me rethink all those times I snuck out when I was a teen. My dad is a huge gun nut too. But I had the alarm bypassed in my rooms (Both mom and dads houses) she must have been making a terrible racket for him to notice. Sad she lost her life for something so many of us have done as teens.

I despise the term gun nut...

My father owns several firearms for protection and hunting. He told me very clearly do not try to sneak into the house, or you may be mistaken for an intruder. My brother and sister were told this too. This actually made me more responsible because if I would miss curfew I would just call and let my parents know. They were far more reasonable then I always thought they would be.

Well that's what she gets for not knocking on the door.

That's what she gets for sneaking out in the first place. Doing dirt gets you caught up.

My family has this crazy thing called communication.

Sneaking back into the house is room for being grounded, not being shot.

not saying she should have been shot, but considering she was shot in the basement,it's very likely the stepdad thought it was a burglar or home invader, and assumed the stepdaughter was upstairs in her room, where she was likely supposed to be.

the real question here is - did he shout out a warning or anything? or did he just barge downstairs, gun blazing?

You guys spend way too much time trying to find people to blame when there are accidents. **** happens...deal with it.

I think it was stupid of her to be sneaking around when she knew her father tended to shoot first when sneaking out but it falls on her father far more to have more self control and not start shooting especially when you have children in the house.

I'm worried that Charl's posts have crossed the line into warning signs.

maybe I'm overreacting.

You didn't call it an accident. You went straight for the whole, "Stupid kid got what she deserved," angle. Pretty much assuming the stance that sneaking out of the house warrants getting shot by your own father.

Charl, you are colder than Russian winter!

While Charl tries to find some tact,

I would like to ask: does anyone know which is more common, saving yourself or someone else using a gun or accidental deaths with a gun?

In other words, are you more likely to rightfully defend yourself with a gun or accidentally shoot someone?

Just about. It wouldn't have hurt a thing to have called out her name before opening fire. Too many people have that shoot first mentality anymore.

I'd say the blame for the incident ends up 25% her for pulling this and not telling him and 75% for not taking time to confirm whether or not she was an intruder before firing. I understand it can be stressful to think that someone could potentially be in your house to kill you and your family but just asking for confirmation of the person and mentioning you are armed and willing to shoot should take precedence over shooting first.

lol...so you guys don't get your knickers in a twist. The comment was in response to Tanin and his knocking on doors. Again, you guys spend too much time trying to find someone to blame in these accidents, so you can call it murder. It's unfortunate that this occurred, but things like this happen. Now get over it and move on.

Yeah, if had an intruder I would alert him/her to the fad that I have a gun pointed at him. Shooting somebody should be your absolute LAST option.
