That Guy With The Glasses

It was directly on the blip.tv site under Nostalgia Critic. Someone must've released it too early.

Actually I think they had to release it early to fit into their schedule. I've been following the group's twitter feeds and from the sounds of it, [BLACKOUT]they're all busy shooting a second-year anniversary in Reno. Don't ask me why it's in Reno, but still, hooray![/BLACKOUT]

You know, I have been folowing the Critic and some of his video contributors for the last couple of years. I found out about them from their dealings with Cinemassacre.
Lately though I've really been losing interest with all of Doug's characters. To be honest I started losing interest with him after he did his top 20 movies list. I don't know why, but that was really the breaking point for me. After his top 20 list I could not help but feel that he had quite an elitist attitude about film. To add to that, his shtick just seems repetitive and uninspired lately.

How could his Top 20 be elitist? He put some pretty easily accessible stuff on that. It's not like it was a list filled with Fellini, Bergman, Lang and Kurosawa. He listed Batman, Patton, Amadeus (okay the last one may be a bit ostensibly high-brow), a lot of really well-made yet middle-of-the-road films. If he listed The Bicycle Thief or anything by Carl Theodore Dreyer I'd agree with you.

Besides, liking films does not make you an elitist. It means you like good films.

His list won all respect from me the instant he mentioned Spirited Away. Probably one of my favorite movies ever. Though I was a bit sad to see no Pan's Labyrinth.

Anyone seen the new Nostalgia Chick video talking about blonde popstars, or Linkara's History of Power Rangers videos?

Linkara's PR videos are great, weird how I remember the first four seasons... and the two movies.

I think it's amazing to realize how much Bulk & Skull evolved throughout the series.

Her comparisons of Lady Gaga to those shallow air heads is off. Lady Gaga is more of a shock pop artist like Madonna and all around performer like Michael Jackson. Her songs and videos, though pop and sometimes weird just for the sake of being weird, are 100% more substantial and meaningful than anything Briteny ever mustered. Other than that, a pretty solid review.

I didn't really get the part when she said Gaga was pretending to be a bad singer.

I think the point was that she isn't really "singing" in her music these days - it's closer to saying things in key than singing.

Well mostly, but she's doing pop not R&B or Rock, but you can tell that she can sing despite performing songs that don't really require it, like Beyonce when she does her pop songs. It's not like with the pop singers who can't really sing and don't try either like Kelli Ali, Ke$ha, Speares, etc. (Though I feel really bad for putting Kelli Ali in there, but let's face it, she couldn't really sing when she was with Sneaker Pimps.)

It's more like Gaga comes up with songs that don't utilize the full range of her voice most of the time.

I always took Lady Gaga as an extreme evolution of postmodern burlesque with a heavy emphasis on aesthetics. A kind of gypsy rose, coca-cola, mescalin dream. That you can sing along to.

She's saying that Lady Gaga can indeed sing (as evident in her teenager years), but her current songs suck where she says incredibly stupid things like "Ra Ra Oh La La" and "Po po po po, my pokerface" and sings pretty bad in them as well.

Good lord, if Critic doesn't turn around and shout "Of course!" at some point during this event...

Hm, I'll definitely have to research that. :woot:

Which seems a weird criticism to dish out to a pop artist. I mean does she also find fault with MJ, the king of pop himself, because of his "Chmons" and various quirks or various songs that didn't utilize the full potential of his voice?

Oh come on. That's got to be the only reason he dressed as M. Bison in his plot to take over the... obscure micronation. It will be said.

Personally I'm glad to finally see Dr. Insano play a major role in a crossover event. Plus we're getting Ensign Munrooooooe in the mix too.

No it isn't a weird criticism. It's a very valid and true criticism. Lady Gaga, surprisingly can sing. However, based on her current works, she can't.

She isn't using her talent and instead is focusing on making herself look like an absurd spectacle, with horrible songs, and sounding awful.

Guess it depends on how you see it; like I said, you could use the same criticism to discredit MJ and you'd be wrong. Just because she isn't using the full potential of her vocals by doing pop music does not make her songs bad, and it most certainly doesn't give justification to compare her to talentless divas like Speares who she's nothing like. NChick pretty much said that because she has blonde hair she's just like those other shallow pop stars. This is ridiculous, and it goes to show how little of that portion of her review she actually thought out. Outside of their bleached heads they're nothing alike in image or music. Ignore her hair color and one would more quickly think to compare her image to Madonna or Bjork and her music to Madonna or MJ.
