The Amazing Spider-Man 2 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Video Game Thread - Part 7

I got the game for PS4 on Friday. I haven't completed it yet. I think I'm at 7/14 missions so far.
The story isn't too bad so far.
Gameplay is a bit glitchy(I was fighting some thugs and one of them literally flew half way across the street haha!).
I actually think the game is really fun! The web swinging isn't as great as S-M2 but it is really fun, and when you get the boost upgrade, it's even better. Especially when you start to master it.

I suppose it's all a matter of opinion.

Yeah, I thought the story was kinda decent until the last 30 minutes or so.

Damn, was that bad.

  • Felicia talks to Spider-Man, and he makes his jokes aimed at street thugs, what?
  • The camera during the boss fights is the worst camera in a Spider-Man game as far as I experienced, no exceptions, THE WORST
  • I'm facing the boss, even when there is no one else in the room, and the camera automatically rotates away
  • The Eletro fight reminds me of the fights against Electro in both Ultimate Spider-Man and Web of Shadows (except, you can't toss him when you webstrike him), and the grid at the start of his fight reminds me of the final fight in Enter Electro
  • The fat jokes Spider-Man shoots in Ultimate Spider-Man #012 are funny in the context of that issue, they are repeated so many times here, it was annoying and unfunny, and Sam's delivery of jokes is still not good. The "Just a Skinny Kid" line copied directly from Amazing Spider-Man #246 is a good change of pace in the Kingpin fight
  • I was glad Shocker jumped on high platforms in his second fight, reminds me of the fights against him in Spider-Man 2, only this time it's very watered down and awfully underwhelming
  • To get the third bomb, I HAVE to defeat the Task Force soldiers, but I didn't need to defeat them on ground level, all I had to do was disarm them and get the bomb, and I'd still have enough time to take the bomb, throw in the river, and return

Man, this game is short, really short, I can spend more time playing both PS1 Spidey games from start to finish spending more time, and it's still a buggy game. There was no excuse for having all the bugs, they should have been ironed out

Yeah. Sounds like I made the correct choice in waiting for a huge price drop before getting this game. Even watching the walkthroughs on YT have been very underwhelming.

Well.

Isn't that the question of the day?
I see what you did there :oldrazz:

Wisest of choices
Maybe it really did went into a 6-8 months development cycle as one or two posters suggested

Game sucks. :(

I was watching Aleks and James (from The Creatures) stream this and boy was it total crud.

Yeah, this game is pretty bad. I started on Friday, beat it on Sunday. It is so much of a step down from the last one in many ways.

One thing I loved about the 1st was that the story was actually pretty good! Enjoyed the big role Gwen had in it as well, there was a bit more of that emotional anchor you don't usually see attempted in a Spidey game with her there as that, and that was just quite literally swept under the rug here. The story felt very disjointed here compared to the last one. You go to one location and you get a random story mission and that's how it is every time.

I really don't know why but it just felt like a complete downgrade. Guess it was the overall production values.

Gameplay-wise, it felt jittery in places to me. I had the controls down from the start, yet things like the camera would hamper me. The swinging is interesting... I appreciate that they put more thought into the mechanics of it all but I'm not a fan. Too often do you swing into a wall or the roof of a building and skitter all over the place.

Oh yeah, the hero/menace thing gets to be a pain in the butt sometimes. You're not really able to just swing around the city and check things out. It's kind of like a monkey's paw type of deal. Last time around we got nothing to do after we finished some city events but swing around, this time around we have to do stuff or we can't swing around without getting shot at.

I dunno. I really enjoyed Shattered Dimensions and TASM from Beenox a ton. This one didn't do it for me.

I haven't played Spider-Man since Activision's Spider-Man (PS1) and briefly SM2 (PS2) I thought they were wonderful gaming experiences. As someone on the outside looking in, why have the Spidey games regressed so badly since those games? Shouldn't the games be getting better as they refine the game play?

Time for me to state where I place this now among the other Spider-Man games
  1. Spider-Man 3 (Treyarch)
  2. Spider-Man 2 (Treyarch)
  3. Spider-Man (Neversoft)
  4. Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro (Vicarious Visions)
  5. Ultimate Spider-Man (Treyarch)
  6. Amazing Spider-Man (Beenox)
  7. Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Beenox)
  8. Friend or Foe (Next Level)
  9. Web of Shadows (Griptonite Games)
  10. Web of Shadows (Shaba & Treyarch)
  11. Spider-Man 3 (Vicarious Visions (PS2))
  12. Spider-Man 2 (Eclipse Studios (GBA))
  13. Spider-Man 2: Sinister Six (Activision (GBC))
  14. Spider-Man 3 (Vicarious Visions (GBA))
  15. Maximum Carnage (LJN (SNES))
  16. Ultimate Spider-Man (Vicarious Visions (GBA))
  17. Battle for New York (GBA)
  18. Spider-Man 2 (PC)
  19. Amazing Spider-Man 1 (LJN (NGB))
  20. Spider-Man 2 (PC)
  21. Amazing Spider-Man 1 (LJN (NGB))
The rest should be recycled for all I care
Never played Spider-Man vs Kingpin on the Sega CD, no comment on that one

I'm surprised you didn't do the same. You held out for a while before getting ASM.

Game sucks. :(

I'm not sure I would say it flat out sucks, that might be a little too harsh but yes, the game is very underwhelming. Nothing exciting about this game at all.

Call of Duty. That's the reason. Activision found their billion dollar franchise right there and they'll do whatever it takes to make sure that keeps thriving. Spider-man makes money, sure, but not CoD money. They're not interested in producing a high quality game. They shoot for mediocrity in any game other than CoD so they can enjoy a wider profit margin.

After 3 disappointments in a row, Amazing Spider-Man was a pleasant surprise
This one looked pretty similar, with some improvements. And I mostly wanted it for the swinging system

I want to be surprised Activision stand strongly with this, but thinking of other developers, they also put too much focus on one franchise or two only

Hey guys. Here are my combat suggestions. The plan is to present this to Activision and Beenox.

Combat

1. Combos – SM1-current - I think it’s time to include more combo options. I think a great idea could be to use the basic commands to create new combos. Like for example Square,Triangle(Web),Circle(Sig). If a combo requires a web than triangle must be included in it. I think it should be possible to still keep the combat freeflow but more options are desperately needed. The trick is making the combos not only cool looking but iconic as well. Sm2 and some of the games after had some really cool looking combos. I miss those. ASM2 is kind of repetitive because there aren’t a lot of new maneuvers or animations.

2. Air Combos – SM1 – Most Spidey games – I think including air combos is really important because it opens up the gameplay giving it more options.

3. Grapple – SM2/Shattered – we seem to have lost the ability to pick up the opponent and do various things to him. SM2 had a really great move that allows him to piledrive the opponent in the air.

4. Counter Attacks – SM2/Shattered – I miss this. After dodging Spidey had specific commands to do different counter animations.

5. Takedowns - just like Batman I think special takedowns should open up to Spidey after certain criteria are met. Not to be confused with the signature moves. These are more elaborate however I think keeping them simple and allowing us to integrate the move into the combo itself would be awesome. EX : Circle, +Square or Triangle + Circle

6. Special Moves – SM2 – As Spiderman upgraded you got access to some really fun looking combos like hanging an opponent from a lamb etc or my personal favorite from SM2 : The Steps moves.

7. Web Strike – WOS – I really liked the idea of flowing from one opponent to the next. I also liked some of the additions added in Shattered Dimensions.

8. Stealth – I think stealth is cool but it would be nice if it was less automated and had interactive moments. I also think it would be nice if there were a number of different animations and possible scenarios.

9. Special Attacks – WOS/Shattered – as Spidey upgraded you had access to really cool Ultimate moves that can clear opponents in a big way. EX: L1 + O = Agility Attack

10. Wall Attacks (Bouncing,Wall Running) – USM – Spidey doesn’t really use his environment that much. I think we should able to do attacks off the walls by bouncing off them.

Nice list.
Here's mine:
1) Spider-Man on PS1
2) Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro
3) The Amazing Spider-Man 2
4) Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
5) Spider-Man 3: The Game
6) Spider-Man: The Movie
7) Spider-Man 2: The Game
8) Spider-Man: The Animated Series
9) Spider-Man and Venom: Separation Anxiety
10) Maximum Carnage
You enjoyed Amazing Spider-Man 2 a lot more than I did yesterday, I'll have to wait a while before the disappointment soaks itself away and I embrace the enjoyment
Speaking of Shattered Dimensions, construction sites here remind me of the Juggernaut level in that game, a lot

Yes to combo variety
I love air combos, but it seems a bunch of posters here prefer the grounded, less anime combat for Spidey
I think they should satisfy all by allowing combat to move to walls and make Spider-Man a bouncing pinball

3. Grapple – SM2/Shattered – we seem to have lost the ability to pick up the opponent and do various things to him. SM2 had a really great move that allows him to piledrive the opponent in the air.
Did he pile drive in Shattered? I know he does in Spider-Man 3, never did it in Shattered Dimensions

Time to rank it in Spidey games.

1: Ultimate Spider-Man
2: Spider-Man 2
3: Web of Shadows
4: Shattered Dimensions
5: Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro
6: The Amazing Spider-Man 2
7: The Amazing Spider-Man
8: Spider-Man 3.

Did nobody besides me love or even play Spider-Man and the X-Men: Arcade's Revenge?

I actually think this game improved on the first one,but it needed a better story.

Gameplay wise, it was definitely an improvement.

But damn, yeah. The story was lacking big time.

You must be too young to remember my friend! Haha.

Arcades Revenge is a trial in sheer frustration. I love it.

Now I want to check it out. :funny:

I googled it.

SNES, right? I have just right emulator for it.

The story just sucked, there was a HUGE potential but Beenox said "screw it".
