I can't find a thread for anime in general or any individual series. Since most popular anime series are based on Shonen or Shojo Manga, they technically belong here. This is a place to discuss the week's latest anime episodes and post any anime related news.

First topic is an appropriate one for Superhero hype: My Hero Academia season seven just dropped. Thoughts on the episode?

I want to say there use to be an anime board on here along time ago, but I could be mixing it up with another forum from years ago lol. I haven't watched My Hero in quite some time. Loved the first season, just kinda fell off the wagon over time. Maybe I'll get back on it before too long.

Currently watching Kaiju No. 8 and really loving it. Just got caught up on the Berserk manga not too long ago. That's been my most recent manga/anime.

I am excited for DC's anime from WB Japan. Hopefully John Cena voices Peacemaker for the dub lol.

This is been a debate. Are mangas considered comic books or should they exist in their own space?

Mangas are comics. Not really sure what the debate is about. The thing about anime is it isn't just based on manga. In fact, more and more are based on light novels. And then there are the original series.

I haven't finished Attack on Titan, I'm on the final season, but I'm already missing it.

Can someone please recomend me some animes, or animation in general, with psychologically rich and deep characters, with some philosophical questions as well?

I've already seen FullMetal Alchemist.

Paranoia Agent might fit that if you haven't seen it.

If you’re looking for something a little more standard, I’d recommended Death Note. Lots of mind games and cat-and-mouse type stuff.

If it’s something similar in tone to that but a little more laid back, playful, thoughtful and philosophical, try Death Parade. I’m only a few episodes in so far, but I’ve been really enjoying it.

If you want something even more laid-back, not quite as dark and more slice-of-life, try Haibane Renmei. This one’s a little bit harder to find, but if you can, it’s worth watching. Less narratively driven and more just vibes, but still has stuff to talk about and say.

Want to go more the procedural route? Try Psycho-Pass, particularly season one. I haven’t watched the second season but I’ve heard it’s hot garbo. There’s been some other stuff released after that I haven’t watched it I’m not sure about.

Still want procedural but even more sci-fi, dialogue and pondering, with some action and espionage thrown into the mix? I’d recommend Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

Really want to go into the deep end? Try Neon Genesis Evangelion. Starts as sort of like your typical mecha anime with young teenagers piloting against robots to defend against giant monsters, though those are more of a post-apocalyptic backdrop for a coming-of-age story, some slice-of-life, character exploration and some heavier philosophical and psychological material. Just a bit of warning, it gradually evolves as it goes and does get…let’s just say, the second half gets heavier and reveals some things about its characters and the world they live in that really change the vibe of the show from when it started. If that doesn’t phase you or deter in anyway, however, go right ahead.

Want philosophical, psychological, procedural, thriller, slice-of-life, with some mystery and horror for good measure? Try Monster. I’ve only watched 10+ episodes out of 74, but it’s really good. A bit of a slower burn, but still keeps you invested. It’s on Netflix.

That’s all that comes to mind at the moment. Hope that gives you some good options to choose from.

Oh wow... thank you so much!

Pluto is a good good one to check out as well.
I can’t believe I forgot about that one! Absolutely yes! Also, from the same author that did another work which was also adapted into one of the anime I suggested, Monster.

Anything from Naoki Urasawa in general is just quality all the way down. I haven’t checked out any of his other works. But they’re also great. Hope they get adapted eventually.

Another one that just popped into my head I can’t believe I didn’t mention in my other post is Puella Magi Madoka Magica, an interesting take on the magical girl anime genre, and that’s all I’m gonna say because just trying to describe it is a spoiler in and of itself. This is definitely one of those anime where going into it completely blind is a much more rewarding experience. The main anime is only 12 episodes, so you could basically watch it in a day if you wanted.

There is also Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Beginnings and Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Eternal, both of which together basically recap the TV series with some new animation. Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion, the third film, however, is a direct sequel to the events of the TV anime series and is very much essential. There is also an upcoming film, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising, a sequel to movie 3 and the fourth film and final entry in at least in this storyline. No specific release date has been given, except for the year, 2025, so it should come out sometime this year.

You guys are awesome. Thank you for the suggestions.

I think I'll start by Evangelion which is a classic.

All I’ll say is just brace yourself and keep an open mind. It definitely goes to some…places. Also, there’s a movie, End of Evangelion, that is technically the true ending and “replaces” last two episodes of the series, though I’d still watch those two episodes, for completion’s sake.

Afterwards, watch Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Again, it’s really hard to describe without spoiling it. Just trust me, it’ll make sense once you get around to it. :zipped:
