cancer is a nasty way to die. Matt, those statistics about 2nd hand smoke have just been updated. you really should check them out. time and time again, those who minimize its dangers have been proved to be biased (ie paid by the tobacco company).

also Matt, smoking is just plain dirty. it coats your business' walls with tar, the butts stink and they're a fire hazard. you'd be doing yourself and your customers a favor by banning them.

I have more sympathy for the anti-tobacco lobby than people who get indignant about not being able to give themselves cancer where ever they want.

It is weird to want the ability to decide whether or not smoking will be allowed in your own establishment, isn't it?

hey! guess what guys! everyone knows that smoking is bad for you!!! i hate seeing those commercials, then a damn Bacardi commercial comes on right afterwards... um... irony!

that said, i try not to smoke around people who don't, out of respect.

but, once, a long time ago, i was outside a mall, having a smoke, and then this young girl with a stroller comes outside and stands right next to me, and says to me "um... i have a baby here, could you move you and your cigarette somewhere else?" and i said "um........ no, you teenage un-wed mother, i can't, becasue i'm already outside. you should go somewhere."

also, if you want a pretty accurate (in my opinion) look at the whole 'smoker' thing, watch that episode of South Park with Rob Reiner, i forget what it's called, but it has a very nice song in it that about sums up my feelings about smoking.

I don't smoke. I never have. That being said, I have no problem with people who do and occassionally enjoy the smell.

But I tell you this...the anti-smoking lobby sucks. They are a bunch of opportunistic jack asses who EXPLOIT tragedy and MANIPULATE numbers in order to create favorable statistics. I have made the CHOICE to allow smoking in my bar, despite numerous phone calls and letters that border on harrassment asking me not to. Tonight, a group of about 20, picketted outside my bar. Signs and everything for about four hours. I'm considering a restraining order.

Ive always found this whole debate comical. the only law thats needed is this:
a venue has to be 100% non smoking, or 100% smoking. no in between, no smoking areas, no smoking roomsa, just 100% one way por the other

Matt has chosen to allow people to smoke in his bar.
so, in an extraordinary piece of sideways thinking, here is a suggestion:

If someone doesnt want second hand smoke, they dont go in Matt's bar. they go to one that doesnt allow smoking.If Matt finds this is affecteing his business in a bad way, Im pretty sure he will stop allowing smoking in the bar.

Matt needs new staff. he interviews, and during the interview, he tells staff that he allows smoking. if they dont like it, they dont take the job.

Its really quite simple. i dont understand why both sides have been getting in atizzy over the last few years. Business economics will win. there will always be a market for venues that allow smoking, and a market for those that dont.

Here's an idea Matt (take or leave it, it sounds stupid but.. umm yeah) Have a yellow Yield shaped sign on the front door that says, "This bar is a smoking area. Please do not enter if you don't want lung cancer." You shouldn't get too many complains after that. Unless you run a kickass bar and people are dying to get in. In which case, they would forfeit their *****ing about the smoking. I feel like a dumbass having read what I typed but whatever.

Or maybe I'm a real liberal who knows that civil rights apply to more than just people with different colored skin and sexual orientation. Right now, there is so much anti-smoker discrimination going on its not even funny. Like I said, I don't smoke...but I believe people of an adult age, who have read the risks, understand the risks, are able to make the CHOICE whether or not they want to. Just as I am able to make the choice as to whether or not I want it in my bar. Its not so much about the smoking, these *******s have been harrassing me non-stop. Its MY bar, MY property. I don't want other people telling me how to run it.

I understand that Kess. Like I said, I don't smoke and hell, there may come a time when I choose to make my bar a non-smoking zone. That being said, it is my right to decide when that happens. Damned if I am going to let people who have harrassed me from the second I bought the bar, bully me into it.

You should be saying "um... you have a baby there, could you move you and your baby somewhere else?"

Generally I don't think non smokers should be bothered by smoke in enclosed areas at all, ignoring health reasons. However, I don't see the problem with smoking outside and this girl shouldn't be coming over to stand next to you if you are smoking and she doesn't like it. It would have been different if she was there first and you had strolled over and lit up.
