I 've been a fan of Fantastic Four: The Trial of Galactus for years, to the point of buying two copies since the first one fell apart. (The pages of the original -- which was my first Marvel comic ever, imagine -- are now taped up around my apartment.)

What else by Byrne would you reccomend? Are there other trades of his work on Fantastic Four? What about other Marvel heroes, or how is his work on New Gods or NeXtmen?

I just love his use of language, especially in the narration. And of course, the art is absolute genius.

Thoughts?

I'm sorry. I still haven't forgiven him for bringing Aunt May and Norman Osborn back from the dead.

His comic work pre-year 2000 is ok, but its deteriotated beyond taste. And him being a huge ******* doesn't help.

Surely, Kitsune, there are some of his works which you like?
I used to like his She-Hulk, but I'm enjoying the new She-Hulk Comic, so much more.

I still haven't forgiven him for what he did to Vision and Wanda in West Coast Avengers.

His entire run on FF is being collected in Fantastic Four Visionaries: John Byrne. I think they're on like the sixth volume. His Man of Steel is supposed to be great, though it's not in continuity anymore.

His work as artist & co-plotter on Uncanny X-Men is considered a high point of the series. Dark Phoenix Saga, anyone?

He's truly one of the legends of the industry.......really wish he'd retire though. He's become such an arrogant ass, and he's past his prime as an artist and writer.

My favorite Byrne art in the Fourth World best. Some of the men in that series were gorgeous--especially Scott Free and Josh Sanders. Byrne never made Johnny Storm look that hot.

From a storytelling standpoint, Byrne's biggest accomplishments on the FF was the Trial of Galactus. I also like some of the touches he added to various Skrull and Inhumans subplots, the personality of Dr. Droom, and his exploration of Thing's psychological block that might prevent him from remaining as de-stoned Ben Grimm. Byrne received far too much credit for revamping Susan Richards. When she discovered her force field ability way back in FF 22, she was using them to do just about all the stunts that she used during Byrne's run on the series.
