Campbell to Send Birds After Watts
Source: Variety
October 18, 2007

Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) is in negotiations to direct Universal's new version of The Birds, starring Naomi Watts.

The studio is planning a reimagining of Daphne Du Maurier's short story, which inspired the 1963 Alfred Hitchcock classic.

Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller will produce through their Platinum Dunes, while Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman are producing for Mandalay Pictures.

Universal is not looking to rush the film into production prior to a possible strike.

Stiles White and Juliet Snowden wrote a version of the script, which is still being developed. New writers may be brought on board.

Campbell is attached to Fox's runaway train actioner Unstoppable and crime thriller 36 at Paramount. Watts, who will next be seen in Funny Games, is filming The International, and will follow that up with First Look's adaptation of Amy Sutherland's "Kicked, Bitten and Scratched: Life and Lessons at the World's Premiere School for Exotic Animal Trainers."

See, this remake I wouldn't mind.

This could be really cool. As great as Hitchcock's one is, some the effects look really dated.

May not be so bad.

Easy. It's not a direct remake. It's based on the original story, which was different from the Hitchcock movie.

No.... it's just that.... Hitchcock's version scarred me for life, giving me the slight phobia I have of larger flying birds...

And I wouldn't want such a classic remade. The cheesy effects are part of it's charm.

Wasn't there a remake or sequel in the 80's I remember?

You my friend must be scared of paint drying as well sense they give off the same kind of horror.

i never once found the original to be scary in the least. my mom had talked it up for so long that once i did see it, me and my bro were both very unimpressed.

however i found the original story to be incredibly haunting, so this i am excited for.

Yeah I agree, the orignal story was really cool.
Just to let everyone know im not a hitchcock fan. So far i've seen 3 of his movies, and they start out well enough but then just hit rock bottom rather quick.

This remake has been top secret for some time hasn't it?
The original was part of my childhood. I'd be interested to see another interpretation.

The Birds Remake to be Directed by Diederik Van Rooijen

Universal Pictures has hired Dutch helmer Diederik Van Rooijen to direct the remake of the Alfred Hitchcock classic The Birds, which Platinum Dunes and Mandalay Pictures are producing.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news and mentions that Van Rooijen is best known as the writer and director of the Dutch TV series "Penoza," which has been remade for U.S. audiences as ABC's "Red Widow."

Naomi Watts was attached to star in the film for a while, but she is no longer involved. The most recent version of the script was written by Jonathan Herman.

Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are producing at Platinum Dunes, while Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman are producing for Mandalay Pictures

I love the original a lot they'll have to really do a lot to impress me on a remake.

Yes! With Michael Bay producing we'll have exploding birds!!

Cool. remember when they tried to remake Hitchcock's "Psycho"? That came off so good.

This remake I don't mind. The original is a very overrated movie. When I saw it I was like 'meh' unlike Rear Window which completely blew me away.

Oh crap, why did it have to be Bay. We've gone from Alfred Hitchcock to Michael Bay, talk about a regression in quality. The original isn't really scary to me either. However, I do like it as it is a very well-made movie with excellent pacing and building of tension. I can see why it would scare or at least unnerve other people, I just don't scare easily.

Huh? Michael Bay isn't directing this.

It's his production company and their track record has been significantly less than stellar.
