Getting rid of a flag that represents rebellion and racism won't change anything...if that's all we do. We need to stamp out racism and anything that represents it. Taking down that stupid flag is just one TINY part of it. People, especially in the south, need better education. Many of the southern states are actually on the list of most uneducated states in the US. That does have an impact. Racism and education sometimes do connect. Not always but it does play a big part in general. We need to help people unlearn what ignorant parents have taught them.

1) Gun Free Zones don't work in a vacuum, just as this won't. Taking down the flag may not take away all of racism, but it's a symbol of the initiative, and that makes all the difference. It could potentially be the start of an adult conversation. Your argument is an excuse to not act at all.

2) Just because it won't eliminate racism, that's not a good reason to not try and minimize racism. You've got mitigation at best, when it most likely will help...somewhere...at least slightly.

3) It doesn't matter. The confederate flag is a symbol of treason and racism. Do you really want to adorn yourself with a symbol that represents our worst moments? Up to you I guess. Pretty disgusting honestly.

4) At very least, we should take them down from Southern capitals. We live in the United States of America. The confederates lost. Keeping it up is essentially saying the war isn't really over, that the South and the rest of us are separate. That's bs.

5) You can make small arguments that "oh this won't really fix the problem." blah blah, blah, the stuff people usually say when something is happening that they don't want to deal with. But that avoids the point. It's not, "why shouldn't we have the flag." It's, "why?" What's the deal with this hateful piece of fabric that you care about so much? You didn't live through it. The South lost. Where's its value, seriously?

I'm from Alabama and have multiple friends and family members who fly the flag who I know don't have an ounce of racism in their heart.
That being said, a lot of them have expressed lately (mostly on FB) that it isn't worth the negative connotations, and that they have no problem putting it away. I do think that it won't be as prevalent in a few decades, but you never know.

Same thing with Jackson and Sharpton: every time there's a high profile shooting, they're on site screaming, Hands up, don't shoot and black lives matter...except when mass killings occur in cities like Chicago and Detroit where it's not as sexy to protest and mug for the cameras. And yes, declaring the Confederate flag illegal, creating action to remove Confederate War Memorials and even the call to ban the song "Dixie" are all good examples of knee-jerk reactions. This kid was a racist a-hole whose victims will receive the justice they deserve once the system does its thing.

I mean... here we are, having a legit conversation about the merits of that disgraceful flag still being used, and here you come...saying, no no no.. the real problem is the darkies and how they talk to each other. Who's making Farakhan relevant? Is it black owned radio and tv stations reporting on his feelings on the confederate flag? If anything, Farakhan demanding the confederate flag be taken down only helps those who want to keep it up.

Nobody is trying to make the confederate flag illegal. But there's no reason a flag that represents treason and slavery to fly high on a state government building in the United States. The confederacy lost the war, remember?

Demanding the confederate flag not be flown on state government building isn't a knee jerk reaction, it's long overdue.

Except that it's politicians right now that are calling for the removal of the Confederate flag. It's not a lot, but it's a first step and it's a sign of good faith.

Really, what is your problem? You find fault with everyone's ideas about combating racism and then offer none of your own. The ideas aren't perfect, but apathy is worse. Just because you don't feel the effects of racism doesn't mean it's not a problem worth fighting.

Look, The Battle Flag NEVER represented a government! It was a military flag. In my opinion ONLY legitimate government flags should fly on Government buildings on a daily basis. The Flag should be taken down from the state building.

In my opinion this flag is best left to be flown on personal property and historical reenactment events.

What White privilege??? I have friends who are poor as dirt and they are white! Only liberals keep using the race card!

Poverty IS Color Blind! Dirt poor is dirt poor!

Also Racism IS Racism! I have seen all ethnicities say racists things! I have seen Mexicans say racist things toward Asians Whites and Blacks. I have seem Blacks say racist things towards Asians, Whites and Mexicans. I have seen Asians act racist towards Blacks.

The people who seen to act the least racist of all groups are Whites yet they are the most accused.
