The Confederate flag

Is it cringe worthy for the certain people using the confederate flag?

It seems that ONLY Leftists enjoy burning flags!
If this was serious, let me prove you wrong. I'm a conservative, and I would be tempted to punch anyone who considers burning an American flag. At the same time, I have advocated burning Nazi German and Soviet flags in the past, and I see nothing wrong with burning the symbol of racist, slavocratic traitors.

Why does this have to be an annual event? Let's make it monthly.

Not enough, we need to carry out Sherman's work further. Most of the South needs to be burned again, especially all their heinous confederate monuments.

While I absolutely loathe that flag, I feel like this really doesn't help things.

I dislike the confederate flag as much as the next guy but burning symbols usually is a sign of hatred, ignorance and narrow-mindedness.

and for an art project this isn't very creative.

Because nothing says patriotism like waving the flag of a secessionist movement that went to war with the USA and was defeated in the 1800s. :whatever:

Nothing says tolerance more than burning a flag because you disagree with it's history. :whatever:

You're gonna punch someone over a piece of cloth?
I said "tempted", not actually willing to do it. I'd want to, but I won't actually punch people for that. It's extremely disrespectful, but within their rights.

Flags and their desecration probably goes back to Ancient Rome when the highest honor you could get was being a Flag/Standard Barer. Roman Legions would kill and die to protect their Legion's standard.

And it seems only right-wingers enjoy burning books. And what makes the protesters here left-wing? Are they burning the flag to advocate for higher taxes? To enlarge the welfare state? Because they want a public option in healthcare?

It would be nice if people could discuss the actual event without insulting others.

I just don't subscribe to that "honor the flag" idea. To whom is it disrespectful? The manufacturer of the flag? Yeah, I guess, but he got the money out of it so what does he care.

But how can one defend the South's position in the Civil War. While one can take the time to understand why the South came to that position because people are people, but in the end, the South's reasons on secession was just wrong.

I'm from Alabama and we never had that holiday. I've never heard of that. Must have lived in that other 1/3 of the state that doesn't bother with it.

This flag was prominently displayed on the roof of the General Lee on the show the Dukes Of Hazzard.

Now Warner Bros. is removing it from all Dukes Of Hazzard merchandise. https://www.yahoo.com/autos/general-lee-from-dukes-of-hazzard-losing-its-122294326432.html

Say goodbye to the General Lee as you’ve always known it.

In the wake of the deadly South Carolina shooting and the decision by several major retailers to stop selling merchandise featuring the Confederate battle flag, the toy spawned by the hit TV series “Dukes of Hazzard” that became a Southern icon wearing those colors will no longer be produced.

While the car hasn’t been in front of a camera since 2007 — a direct-to-video sequel of the 2005 movie starring Johnny Knoxville — the General Lee remains a popular die-cast and model toy, widely available online. (One of the original cars used in the series sold for $110,000 at auction in 2012 to PGA golfer Bubba Watson.)

Following the move by Walmart, Amazon, eBay and others, and the steps by political leaders in South Carolina, Virginia and elsewhere to remove the flag from state capitols and license plates, Yahoo Autos reached out to Warner Bros. Consumer Products, the branch of the movie studio that licenses toys from the series, asking about the General Lee’s status. This was the official reply:

Warner Bros. Consumer Products has one licensee producing die-cast replicas and vehicle model kits featuring the General Lee with the confederate flag on its roof–as it was seen in the TV series. We have elected to cease the licensing of these product categories.

At the time the “Dukes of Hazzard” premiered in 1979 on CBS-TV, the placement of the Confederate flag and the naming of the 1969 Dodge Charger driven — and often flown — by Bo and Luke Duke after the South’s most famous general drew few if any protests, a state that persisted through the end of its original run in 1985. The show was based in part on the real-life exploits of bootlegger Jerry Rushing, who had named his old Chrysler “Traveler” (with one “l”) after Lee’s horse.

Only in recent years has General Lee’s Confederate flag, and its associations with the defense of slavery and white supremacy in America, drawn more backlash. In 2012, Warner Bros. shot down rumors that it was removing the flag from the car, and fan clubs where replicas gather remain adamant in their display of the original.

But with the closing of most commercial outlets to Confederate-emblazoned merchandise, it was somewhat inevitable that the General Lee would meet a hurdle it couldn’t clear. Warner Bros. added that it would not license a General Lee product sans the stars and bars, but the lost sales will likely be minimal; while the show continues in reruns, there’s not been much movement toward another movie or TV series out of the “Dukes of Hazzard” universe. Much like that flag on its roof, the original General Lee has jumped into history.

Um, yeah... you should too! Unbelievable.

Honestly, I don't want to burn the confederate flag; I want Southerners to grow up... to come to terms with the racism and persecution of our past...and then put the flag down. Because why would you want that bloody thing in your front yard - for real. On what possible level is our confederate history something to be proud of or to adorn on our capitals? I just don't get it man.

In terms of burning the American flag, maybe liberals bring up the suggestion more (though I don't see any Americans really burning the flag in protest these days to be honest) because liberals are grown ups who understand nuance. The flag is innert, it's a symbol, it's got only the meaning we put into it. And the meaning is freedom...which has to be freedom even to burn the flag in protest. I don't stand for a flag. I stand for the idea that the flag represents.

Getting rid of the Confederate flag will eliminate racism as much as gun free zones curb gun violence...Liberals make me laugh.
