The Confederate flag

Is it cringe worthy for the certain people using the confederate flag?

That kind of thing drives me insane, not least because it is always a gift to anyone who opposes whatever well-meaning agenda was intended to be furthered.

Reasonable movements to remove the flag from public buildings will now be characterised as a loony campaign that even wanted to ban Dukes of Hazzard.

I mean, yes, it's a flag with a dubious history, and racist connotations. It certainly should not be flying over an sort of government sanctioned building or park.

But it's not the videotape from The Ring. Seeing it, especially in an old show isn't likely to offend anyone.

Or in a historical video game.

It's the social media age- no company can risk an explosion of manufactured outrage.

"Dukes of Hazzard" is going to become the new "Song of the South". It is just going ti disappear.

Though it would be kind of funny if they just placed a big censor over the flag on the car. Maybe they could put an image of Abe Lincoln in its place? :funny:

I don't believe in censoring art. I get them wanting to pull the show, but I can't image people protesting the Dukes.

Well Ben Jones completely changed my views on the subject. I hope they ban the hell out of the Dukes.

Hogan's Heroes has Nazis in it. Is TVLand pro Nazi!?

Banning something as innocuous as Dukes of Hazzard is just ridiculous, as is banning the Confederate flag from historical Civil War video games.

By TVLand pulling off Dukes Of Hazzard from it´s lineup, perhaps Universal pictures should discontinue all copies of Smokey & The Bandit, since on the front of the Trans-Am, there is a small Rebel flag on the license plate/s. :whatever:

This is getting out of hand........

It's already silly enough that German WWII vehicle replicas can't have the swastika flag, which is a historically accurate detail.

True. I also believe that was a reason why the Red Skull didn´t have a swastika in the Cap movies, heck in the Cap comics, you see Nazis fighting the Sentinel Of Liberty all over the place....

Yeah, Red Skull's use of the HYDRA symbol over the Nazi Swastika had nothing to do with censorship but more along the lines of Marvel's creative direction for the franchise and how to use HYRDA.

Yeah, but Skull was/is a Nazis first / foremost, & should´ve been used instead.

I'm pretty sure most people were just demanding the confederate flag be removed from government buildings.

Banning it from retail businesses and media isn't going to make it this flag less popular. It's just makes the anti-confederate flag crowd seem unreasonable.

I'm sorry but this whole thing has become hilarious. I agreed with taking it down from any capitals and I also understand not wanting to sell it in your stores but things like Apple removing historical games because of it and this Dukes nonsense is exactly why many other countries laugh at us. Nobody wants to offend someone so best to remove it from existence right? I don't think there was any rational human out there calling for a ban on the Dukes of freaking Hazard because of the top of their car. These companies are the epitome of stupidity

It's kneejerk reactionary mindless political correctness gone overboard.

No one gives a **** about the Confederate flag on The General Lee on The Dukes of Hazzard, and if they do, they should just shut themselves away in their house with the curtains drawn and blinds closed, door locked, walls soundproof, and no television or internet, lest a bird fly by and trigger their depression over not having the power of flight, or a child laugh and trigger PTSD flashbacks from that time when they got beat up in 2nd grade, or someone walking their dog trigger that time a dog barked at them and caused them anxiety, or.....

I know a lot of black folks that don't like the general Lee or the Dukes of Hazzard, but nobody was calling for it to be taken off the air.

It's just one of those things where people say "yeah that show is kinda problematic, but whatever I just wont watch it".

Nobody was really asking for it to be removed from stores either. I know I likely wouldn't shop at a store that I knew sold such things but a lot of people wouldn't care.

If these companies want to really ingratiate themselves to black consumers they'd do better by not having racist hiring practices or profiling black customers.

Well said.

A local newsman when talking about the Dukes of Hazzard/TV Land story ended with.....guess next is Hogan's Heroes with all those Nazi flags being shown.

Maybe it's the context. When Nazi flags or symbols are shown, they're never being celebrated or condoned. The negative connotation is there (as it should be).

In Dukes of Hazzard, these guys love their Confederate flag. They celebrate it and what it represents.

I think making the connection between the Confederate flag and the Swastika in pop culture is spurious at best. They're shown in completely different contexts.
