Back during Infinity War, where Stark & Quill are discussing their plans to beat Thanos, Dr Strange goes forward in time and witnesses some 14million possible futures, only one of which they win.

Now, we know what happens to him, and then again, we know that Thanos gets dusted in Endgame, BUT is that considered the win that the good doctor was referencing, or did they actually lose and the win we witnessed was just something extra?

I say this, quite simply, because the moment time travel is involved, so many other options suddenly come into play, and I can’t help but wonder how, out of all those possibilities, there is only the one win. That just doesn’t make sense.

I’m thus wondering whether the one win Strange saw actually didn’t take place, at least how he initially saw it; he may have known Stark would be the sacrifice play if they could get the gauntlet on Titan, but then he indicated to Stark during Endgame that the time was now, but that was all because of timeline tampering.

Am I making any sense here? It’s probably a plot device too, but surely Thor would’ve been more capable than Stark of wielding the gauntlet and surviving it, yet Stark told Thor he wasn’t strong enough (or words to that effect).

If Tony had not lived to leave Titan then there would have been no one around to figure out the way to utilize the Quantum Realm to travel back in time. So it wouldn't matter if Thor could survive since there would be no situation for him or anyone to use a Gauntlet in the first place. That's one of the biggest reasons for Strange to have played his cards as he did in IW.

@OP I believe you kind of hit the nail on the head here. The only way to beat Thanos was time travel. Tony would have given his life fighting Thanos, leading to Thanos' solidified victory (apparently Prof Hulk wouldn't have been able to figure out time travel). But with foresight from the time stone, Strange was able to circumvent the "inevitable" outcome of Thanos' victory by saving Tony's life.
