The Earthquake Thread

A Tsunami wave of 6 feet has hit the islands of French Polynesia, no damage has been reported....doesn't mean there isn't any, this is a preliminary account.

See Chile makes more sense to have an earthquake that could affect Hawaii with a tsunami. A co-worker told me it was Spain.

Chile was once a Spanish colony??????

Still, I can buy an earthquake in Spain, but not even an 8.8 there would affect Hawaii. Chile makes more sense, and they do speak Spanish there.

I'm waiting for the 10.5 magnitude. Then I'll be surprised saying it's the end of the world. I believe the #1 earthquake was in Chile, a 9.5 something... and #2 was in Alaska, an 8.7 or something.. which rick rolled for 15 mins straight. Haha. :(

The United States will probably end up helping and then Hugo Chavez will go on a rant about how we're trying to colonize Chile.

Which makes no sense, why would we want to colonize Chile? What are we, Spain?

Well, Hugo Chavez is insane. He hates The United States, so that's what he'll probably say. His counterpart in Bolivia (who also hates the United States) will agree with him.

Chile's current president, Michelle Bachelet (who went into exile in the United States when she was younger) would probably want US help if she asked.

So, clearly by your post, Hugo Chavez isn't Chile's president, correct? Then who the hell cares what he has to say about it?

The US has already pledged help to Chile.

An island has already disappeared in Chile.

That is huge, no wonder there's warnings all the way up to California.

Wow, that is amazing....

The count is now 147 dead.

This is scary. What the hell is going on with Earth's tectonic plates? :csad:

I hope the death toll isn't as high as Haiti's. And tsunami watch for Hawaii...yikes.

if this doesn't add fuel to the "world's going to end in 2012" debate, nothing will.

I don't think it will go anywhere near Haiti's death toll. The government of Chile just announced that they will need 72 hours to give a good specific death count, but its not going to be anywhere near Haiti's death toll. Chile has strong earthquake regulations on its buildings. Haiti had none.

I haven't read where Scientists are saying that Plate Tectonic activity is increasing at any kind of rate.

Yep...just read news about it. Thats at least good to hear. Chile does have safer and more efficient architecture than Haiti anyhow.
But the tsunami watch is another thing I'm worried about, thank goodness it at least has some distance from the epicenter.

Chile's infrastructure is designed for earthquakes.
