Warners Plans Shannara Film

Bringing Terry Brooks fantasy to the big screen.
by Paul Davidson
June 6, 2007 - With the 20th century's greatest works of fantasy — The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Narnia, et cetera — being translated to the silver screen with great success, it's no surprise that the studios would consider adapting other popular series as well. His Dark Materials is on its way, and now the world of Shannara, created by author Terry Brooks, may see the light of day at the cinema.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has struck a deal to make a Shannara film. The series takes place in a post-apocalyptic, neo-Medieval future of crumbling skyscrapers in which science is all but forgotten, and humanity's new advances have gone down the path of magic instead.

There are a dozen books in all, starting with The Sword of Shannara, published in 1977. According to THR, the second book — The Elfstones of Shannara — is the one being eyed by Warners. Writers are currently being sought to turn that tale into a screenplay.

Without a doubt many readers of IGN Movies will be familiar with Brooks' series. We'll be sure to keep you updated on what happens with it.

I've always wanted to read these books, but I'm always reading another series whenever I see them in the bookstore. Looks like now I will have to read them when I done with A Song of Ice and Fire.:woot:

The Elfstones of Shannara is one of the best fantasy books ever written.

I was surprised this wasn't jumped on immediately after the success of LOTR.

I would have prefered the Sword of Shannara (first book) as the first movie, but I can see it being considered by most people as a total rip off of LOTR (which it is actually, but still a great read)

Oh...
:(
Well...Mine has the word Elfstones, so therefore it is better. :cmad:

I'm surprised no one here seems to care too much about this anouncement.

The AICN forum is pretty lively on this, but somtimes it is far too difficult to pick out meaningful posts when they're scattered throughout pages of meaningless and often times vile rantings.

I guess the news isn't comic booky enough for this site.

Back to the Batman forum :)

What book are you on? I'm half way through A Storm of Swords. But yeah, take your time with those books, they're meant to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace.

I just found out about this, and I'm really excited. I love Brook's work. I've read all of his books except the last of the Word and Void series, so I can't wait to see his books translated to screen. He's definitely one of the best fantasy writers out there.

Hopefully his work gets treated much better then Eragon was :(

Oh this is awesome...
Allanon will just be an 8 foot cloud where you never see his face but once in the movie.

So, all these great fantasy novels are getting great films made....and yet Dragonlance, a massive seller with a huge following only get's a crappy animated direct to dvd?

makes no sense.

Whoa, where'd you get that idea? Is this movie being directed by the guy who did FF:ROTSS or something?
