Refn to direct Washington!

http://www.deadline.com/2012/12/nicolas-winding-refn-equalizer-movie-director-negotiations/

BREAKING: Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn has been selected to direct The Equalizer for Sony Pictures and Escape Artists. The film, loosely based on the 1980s TV series, has been a hot ticket for directors since Denzel Washington agreed to play the title role. A number of directors had been considered along the way. Negotiations toward a deal will begin immediately with Refn.

Production is set to begin in late spring 2013. The script was written by Richard Wenk, and Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch are producing through Escape Artists, along with Alex Siskin, Mace Neufeld, Tony Eldridge, Michael Sloan, and Washington. David Bloomfield will executive produce, and Andrea Giannetti and Hannah Minghella are overseeing for Columbia.

The TV series, originally created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim, starred Edward Woodward as a mysterious former covert operations officer who helps people in trouble. The film has that basic premise but takes off in its own way, tailored to Washington’s skills. He’ll play a solitary, monastic figure who hates injustice and devotes himself to helping people who are being victimized. It seems a strong match for Washington, who’s in the Best Actor Oscar mix for his performance in the Robert Zemeckis-directed Flight.

Refn, repped by WME and Anonymous Content, most recently helmed the incredibly violent Only God Forgives with his Drive star Ryan Gosling.

Well, I'm definitely more interested in this project now. Refn is awesome.

Jesus, this thread started in '05?!

Washington no. Anthoney Hopkins would have been the only guy to do this role justice.

We all saw how Denzel can elevate typical fun popcorn cinema like Unstoppable and Safe House. There's no doubt about this one.

I loved Denzel in unstoppable (granted I really liked that movie), so him in an action role is always welcomed.

10 years ago, this would have been perfect for Michael Caine.

Very true. But we did get Harry Brown, which was an awesome Equalizer-type movie featuring Caine. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

So will Refn shorten the title to EQUALIZER?

Arnold Schwarzenegger should do the trailer voice. Just because I want to hear him say the word Equalizer.

The script is great and with Denzel and Refn... Wow! It'll be phenomenal!

I never thought he was a good fit anyway unless the idea was to make a low budget movie that wasn't designed for the mainstream. If Tony Scott were still alive this would be an ideal re-team for him and Denzel.

I'm kind of glad refn isn't making this. It seems to run of the mill for him, and it doesn't seem like the kind of project that they would let him make unconventionally. Its probably why he left.

Wonder if that
gang rape
scene will stay now...

Jeez, with this film, [BLACKOUT]Hick[/BLACKOUT] and [BLACKOUT]Hounddog[/BLACKOUT]. That sort of scene is gonna be like Natalie Portman and crying -- she does one every other movie.

So this movie won't really be that similar to the show with Denzel in the role? I'm not sure I really like him in the part. It could end up feeling like any other American spy movie or like Man on Fire. Part of the charm of the original was an Englishman living in New York city. It brought some of the cold, hard feel of an English series to an American audience. Wasn't McCall some kind of former MI6? I'm guessing that won't be the case with Denzel.

I hope it will have the theme music and is still set in New York and not some other city. If it's just the Equalizer in name only but nothing is really the same, then what's the point?

Wasn't Russell Crowe once attached to this project? I would've liked an English actor in the part. If he hadn't been playing Bond, Daniel Craig would've actually been a decent fit as he's in some ways more like McCall than Bond.

Marton Csokas (upcoming Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and The Amazing Spider-Man 2) will play the villain in Columbia Pictures' The Equalizer. He will be joining Denzel Washington and Chloë Grace Moretz in director Antoine Fuqua's big screen adaptation of the 1980s TV show.

The original show was created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim. It starred Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a private detective with a lot of contacts who is available for hire if you have a problem that you don't know how to solve.

In the movie, McCall is living a quiet life while working at a Home Depot when one of his acts of kindness towards a prostitute (Moretz) gets him embroiled with the Russian mob. Csokas plays a vicious fixer for the Russia mob.

The movie was written by Richard Wenk with Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch producing through Escape Artists, alongside Alex Siskin, Mace Neufeld, Tony Eldridge, Michael Sloan, and Washington.

The Equalizer will shoot this summer in Boston.
