I got into a bit of a debate with a guy at work this morning over the 700 mile fence at the U.S.-Mexican border that the Bush administration is pushing to be built. He said it was a great thing and that it would stop illegal immigration and drug trafficking in the parts that it was erected. I was a bit stunned that anyone would think it would actually stop anybody who really wants to come into the U.S. and simply pointed out that it won't stop or probably even really slow anyone down who really wants in. They'll go through it, under it, over it and around it. It's inevitable. He then changes his stance to say that the fence would slow people down really bad, to the point that they'll give up and quit trying to come into the U.S. and then somehow managed to bring up the fact that the drug cartels have even more sophisticated weaponry and technology than most military outfits. Oookay...so I simply said that the fence would stop or slow anyone down, especially drug cartels who have equipment better than most military organizations, and that the high cost of building the fence would not be justified at all by the end result and would therefore be a waste of money. He said that it's better than doing nothing and then kept asking me what my alternative suggestion would be for that money. I said I didn't necessarily have to have an alternative solution to a problem that's been going on for 40+ years and never been solved to point out that this huge expenditure for a fence that wouldn't stop or slow anyone down was a waste of money. He got mad and said that I was just a complainer who didn't have anything better to do than be negative. LOL! (Yes, he's a hardcore conservative who tows the neo-con line. I get along great with him until we start talking politics. Heh!)
So, what do you think? Do the ends justify the means with this fence? Is it a blow to America's foreign relations? Will it really slow down illegal immigration or drug trafficking? What are some other ways we could be spending that money that would be more beneficial? What other things should we be focusing on to really address this so called problem?
