Can animals commit suicide?

The only animal I ever heard of that wanted to commit suicide was Michael Jackson's.

My cat wants to kill me. If she did kill me would that be murder?

It seems that my friends dog has done just that. This dog that he has had been tied up in the back yard for years and after the majority of the family that showed it affection left he was depressed. Since the only family members that showed him affection left he was very sad and three weeks later it hung itself on its own chain over a fence. Was is fascinating is that the dog has jumped over the fence many other times without haning itself and lived. When it was found this time dead it seemed as if it on purposely pulled itself hard on it's neck and either choked to death or it broke its own neck.

Can animals commit suicide? Was this dog just really stupid or was it really hurt inside. What do you guys think?

Man, painful flashbacks. Exact same thing happened to my old dog Sarge. Great dog, German Sheopard. He wasn't suicide though, just stupidity. He liked digging and getting out of the yard, so for the first time we had to tie him up. He dug out of the yard, realized he couldn't get away, so he jumped back in and hung himself. I found him and cried for days. I miss that dog to this day. Great family dog and my best buddy. It's hard.

But for the most part I don't think animals can kill themselves out of spite or anything. Maybe some of the more intellengent like Dolphins or Gorillas or something, but on average, I wouldn't think so.

Animals are not suicidal. They can feel depression, but not suicidal. And that depression might result in death. But the resulting death, however, was not by design.

Indeed they can. A friend of mine's dog jumped off his front porched while tied down. Accidentally killing itself. Pretty gruel too whenever I went out there and saw it. I also had a black, long haired cockerspanol (SP!?!?) but I watched it (I was 9 at the time) and it casually walked right infront of my neighbor's truck. I had to drag its dead ass off the road :( Brain matter everywhere.

So what have we learned here kids?

Lemmings committ mass suicide when prompted to do so by Disney film crews.

Dude, Bison, I've heard of dogs dying like that. They don't do it on purpose. They'll jump over a fence, but the leash ends up hanging them. Purely accidental.

I see squirrels commit suicide all the time :o

Not by its own design.

I bet the cocker-spaniel was preoccupied or depressed and did not notice the truck. If it did, I'm sure the dog would be out of the truck's way.

Animal's first instinct is survival.

i don't think they can kill themselves. they are stupid, and can unintentionally die because of their mistakes, but i refuse to believe an animal will be like 'oh, well... this sucks, im going to walk in front of that semi'

as far as the dogs concerned, it probably doesnt know the semi would actually hit it.

I heard about this rabbit that saw his mate die run over by a car... and then sat quietly on the freeway until a car ran over him too.
Which goes to show that rabbits know that a life without f@#$ing is no life at all. :)

animals can kill themselves. but chances are the dog pulled harder because he was trying to break free eather than trying to choke himself harder.

Everytime I see you post I want to make an AIDS joke, I feel horrible:( I'm sorry you have AIDS:(

Well known fact, cats go off by themselves to die.

My dad had a dog that did the same fence thing. A few days before, it had gotten into the neigbors yard and killed some kittens. Later it tried to finish the job, but when it jumped the fence it got hanged.

[edit]

Hanged? Hung? It should be hung, right?

i think it's the same with the smarter mammals as it is with human beings.

if you provided them with the sufficient material/means they required to commit suicide, then perhaps they could.

having what would drive one to take it's own life (human or otherwise) is slighltly beyond me.

Lemmings, man. Lemmings.

That's the one I was thinking of when I voted yes.

Sometimes a "parent" bird will deliberatly draw attention to itself to make a predator leave it's chicks alone.

i thought they were both acceptible in speech.

Depends on the usage:

I hung him high.
He was hanged.

Say it out loud substituting the other and it just doesn't sound quite right.

i hanged him high
he was hung

they sound fine to me but i could be wrong

It may not count as real suicide, but I read that beavers are sometimes killed when the trees they chew down fall on them.
