Beau Willimon Space Drama Picked Up Straight to Series at Hulu
House of Cards creator Beau Willimon is returning to television.

More than a year after he abruptly exited the Netflix drama, Willimon has landed a straight-to-series eight-episode order for space drama The First at rival Hulu.

Announced Wednesday as part of Hulu's NewFronts presentation, The First is set in the near future and explores the first human mission to Mars and interplanetary colonization. Willimon created the drama and will write the script and executive produce alongside producing partner Jordan Tappis. Production will begin this year for a premiere on the streamer in 2018.

‘The First’: Beau Willimon’s Hulu Series Gets Premiere Date, First Photos

Hulu has slotted Friday, September 14 for the premiere of Beau Willimon’s straight-to-series drama The First, starring Natascha McElhone and Sean Penn. The premium streaming service also released first-look photos of the series, some of which can be seen above and below.

From Sean Penn’s TV series debut and onwards, there are a fair number of firsts in The First, but the September 14-launching Hulu series about a mission to Mars is not a leading drama. Created by ex-House of Cards showrunner Beau Willimon, this lackluster eight-episode misfire often comes across more like the inverse of the once Kevin Spacey-led Netflix political drama, as I say in my video review above.
