The "Hoodie" Incident: Controversial? Racist? - Part 2

Okay, I was talking with a few people today about the Treyvon Martin situation and one person who butted in the conversation felt that talking about it was too "controversial", and if it the "race card" is played it proves that a lot of people are racist. I ask them why would they feel uncomfortable talking about it if they were talking about Casey Anthony all summer. Long story short, it got me thinking about what opinions from others are about this. So, let's see if we can talk about this without too much name calling. Thoughts?

In the Rodney King riots, the police officers were overcharged and acquitted because of this. Then we got the riots. I just think you are taking a dumb risk with potentially overcharging. Manslaughter is easier to prove.

People that know her say she is very aggressive and always goes for the maximum punishment

I think Zimmerman is an idiot. He didn't lawyer up at all for a good day or two after he turned himself in. He knew full well he could. He DID contact the media and Corey without his lawyers consent. Hence them dropping out of repping him. Regardless if he is guilty or innocent this is plain stupid.

Zimmerman is going to get the biggest beat down of his life while incarcerated, it wouldn't surprise me if he commits suicide.

he's separated from the General Population

It's possible that 2nd degree murder is on the table for plea bargain purposes. Reasonable doubt is all it will take...

At any rate, the original goal of the movement has been accomplished. Now it's up to the lawyers, the judge, and the jury to decide Zimmerman's fate. As it SHOULD be. Not for someone to plead self defense to a cop and then walk away after killing someone.

I hope other states with "Stand Your Ground" laws is taking notes after seeing what happened when the law is invoked.

Yea what do you think will happen if the jury acquits him on Murder 2?

many of the legal experts on CNN don't think she is gonna go for a plea bargain. They she is very aggressive and always goes for the maximum punishment

I'd stay away from downtown. :oldrazz: Then again downtown LA riots when the Lakers lose. Or win. So that probably doesn't mean much nowadays...

Oakland survived the murder acquittal of Oscar Grant's killer relatively unscathed, and the shooting was caught on multiple cell phone videos. He didn't walk though - they got him on involuntary manslaughter.

I think the public would feel better not about a conviction for Zimmerman, but if the "Stand Your Ground" laws were looked at more closely. You don't have to be a black man to be a victim regarding such laws.

I would bet anything that he is acquitted of murder 2 but will get manslaughter and not have to serve any time in jail and instead be under house arrest. This is with the current evidence. He will get a charge as I am sure the prosecutors and judge know that if he walks away with nothing then someone else is going to die over this because people are stupid.

Two things.

In theory if he is acquitted (on self defense) Stand Your Ground won't even apply here.

And if he gets manslaughter he is getting 25 behind bars PLUS his manslaughter, due to the gun laws in Florida. This is why I find risk taking for this overcharge really stupid.

there is a component of the law that grants immunity from arrest when someone invokes Stand Your Ground

I think they should have gone for Manslaughter....I believe he may walk

He won't survive 25 years. So whether it is 35 or 45 years is moot. Guy is going to commit suicide. He is already on suicide watch. Now imagine being stuck in jail for a chunk of your life with every black inmate wanting to inflict prison justice on you. Dude is one and done right there.

That's the part that's stupid. :oldrazz: If you kill someone, the cops should arrest you. It should be a jury that decides whether it was justified or not.

i agree that the law is stupid and should be changed

SYG does not apply if you under a mount assault. That's an entirely different story. Unless you presume Zimmerman was never mount assaulted.

Okay let me clarify, if he was mounted on and assaulted, SYG does not apply. It's difficult to escape a mount.
