The Hype Coloring Book

Sorry. This isn't dead. I'll upload some new lineart tonight.

NEW LINEART

September has been crazy! Lots of work, foot surgery, etc. so without further ado, here's some new lineart. Now that things are getting back into a sense of normalcy, I hope to update this much more often, at the least, bi-weekly.

Awesome!

I can't choose just one...

glad someone likes the new lineart

Referring to Thor Way back on page 11 or so. I didn't realize there was so many pages on this thread.

Ok I took a shot at the TMNT drawing. This is the first color job I've submitted to this thread although I've done a few of them before but didn't get around to finishing. I like to explain my process so here we go, I'll put it in spoiler tags to save room:
I started out by setting the blend mode of the layer the drawing was on to "multiply" so I could just color on layers beneath it and the color would show through. Then I crated a layer for each object in the drawing (the final PSD had 24 layers after merging several of them together when I was finished). After creating a layer for each object I began laying down flat colors using the brush tool. The very first thing I colored were their masks (which I'm proud to say I could recall without needing to google anything).

After laying down the flat colors I created "Highlights" and "Shadows" layers. The Highlights layer was set to 40% opacity and the blend mode was color dodge. The Shadows layer was set to 40% opacity and the blend mode was multiply. I did this by selecting areas with the polygonal lasso tool and filling them with either black or white. Normally I would paint the highlights and shadows with the brush tool but I liked the style I achieved with the hard straight edges created by using the polygonal lasso tool. There's a few spots where the highlights or shadows don't make sense in relation to the global lighting but I added them anyways to create contrast and define edges.

Then I created the background. I started with a simple red to dark red vertical gradient, then on a new layer I drew the ray-like pattern and filled it with a golden-yellow color. I set the blend mode of that layer to color dodge and opacity to about 30% and then applied a layer mask pre-set to hide all and used the radial gradient to reveal the ray-like pattern so that it faded away towards the bottom of the image. I also applied a glow around the artist's signature because the dark background made it kind of hard to read.

Finally I added a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer on top of all the other layers to get the atmosphere I wanted. Above that I added a levels adjustment layer and made the image a little brighter. I call this layer the "Web Adjustment" layer and I add it to any image I am going to upload to the internet because it counter-acts the fact that web browsers display images in uncompensated RGB, which makes them appear slightly darker and more saturated than they do when you are working with images in photoshop. The settings I change on this layer are mid-tone input level to 1.09 and black output level to 5. These settings may vary or be unnecessary altogether depending on the version of photoshop you use and your photoshop settings.
I use Photoshop 6.
Anyways here's a small preview, you can view the full image by clicking the thumbnail or by opening the spoiler tag below.
Hope you like it.

Nice job Bgates87! Have you thought about giving any of the other lineart in here a go?

Thanks! Yeah, I was just looking through the older posts. I'll probably start another one tonight or tomorrow morning.

great, i'm going to be uploading some new lineart sometime this weekend. had a family emergency and an unexpected death, so my real life has to take over my internet life.

i had promised new lineart a couple days back, so i'm sorry. i'll try to make it up. any requests?

Well I've decided to start on that Batwoman image you posted towards the middle of this thread, that should keep me busy for a while so I guess I don't have any requests right now. Thanks for keeping this thread updated.

Ok I've finished up the Bat Woman pic. I took a different approach with this one than what I did with the TMNT pic. After laying down the flat colors I painted in details by hand with the brush tool. I'm just using a mouse so it's hard to get smooth brush strokes, thus the brush strokes are still pretty visible, although I kind of like the texture it creates. Basically I just used black and white at a low opacity to create the details. When painting white over a saturated area I would sometimes switch the mode of the brush tool to overlay or color dodge to preserve the saturation. I chose to cast a kind of green atmosphere over the image after I was done painting to compliment all of the red on Bay Woman's suit and to create an eerie sort of feel for the image.

So here's a thumbnail, you can view the full image by clicking the thumbnail or by opening the spoiler tag below. Enjoy!

Jim Lee-ish? Whatever would give you that impression?
Lol, that's the first thing I noticed about this line art too.
There are some striking similarities:

That's probably what the "After Jim" part means in the signature.
