The Long Walk
Posted: July 29, 2007, 00:00:00 | Section: Film » The Long Walk

This was reported by Bloody-Disgusting today:

During an interview to promote Dimension Films' upcoming Stephen King adaptation, The Mist, director Frank Darabont revealed that he is in fact going to helm King's The Long Walk once he has completed Fahrenheit 451. The film is about a walk where the winner gets the ultimate prize - anything they want for life, and the losers get punished with death! The rules are simple - If you walk too slow, you get a warning, 4 warnings and you are shot. There is only one winner, and the story concentrates on a loosely held group of individuals that become friends and enemies during this inhumane walk. One by one Ray Garraty sees the people around him die, and he faces the truths of his own entry into the Long Walk, and those of his new "friends". He is aware that only one will survive all the way, but it is not until the end that he realized the finality of his situation, and he slowly looses his sanity piece by piece.

Been waiting for this story to be made into a live action film for quite a long time. In the story wasn't there only 3 warnings and not 4 though?

*checks the book*

Yeah, three warnings. Not four.

Nothing new to report, but since people are discussing The Long Walk in the Mist-thread, so... bump :)

Amazing book, I love it. It'd be cheap to make so as long as they nail the characterization, it'll be a fantastic movie

Shock: What is it exactly about Stephen King's material that keeps attracting you?

Darabont: Stephen King's writing. He's such a great storyteller. Oh, by the way, his next book just landed on my desk today. The xeroxed manuscript of this book he's been writing for the last year. It's called "Under the Dome." I'm like four chapters into it, it's awesome. It's really, really good. It's a thrill to get early looks at Steve's work like that. I always feel honored.

Shock: I know you've been working on the adaptation of King's "The Long Walk," how's that progressing?

Darabont: "The Long Walk" is a bit on my back burner at the moment. I won't spend too many more years before I make it, it's going to be coming up I think pretty shortly. But I'll be making it, I'm sure, even more cheaply than "The Mist" because I don't want to blow the material out of proportion. It's such a very simple, weird, almost art film-like approach to telling a story. So let's do it honestly, let's do it that way. Let's not turn it into "The Running Man." So we'll make it down and dirty and cheap and hopefully good.

Sounds like Darabont is taking the right approach to the adaptation. The Long Walk as I said earlier, would be very cheap to shoot and produce. A strong script (which shouldn't be tough considering the source material) is all that will be needed. They should probably go with a bunch of no name actors too, just making sure they could get the job done.

Please let this actually happen this time. I’m extremely happy with that director/writing combo.

I'm embarrassed to admit that this is one of the few Stephen King stories I've actually read start to finish.

Could make a great character piece.

Was hoping Darabont would have been the one to make this but I'm still excited it's finally moving ahead.

André Øvredal talks The Long Walk with Rue Morgue.

As a director, it’s extremely inspiring to be able to tell a story that is so human and so gruesome at the same time. It’s like man vs. the machine in a way, and about the innocence of these boys and how they don’t really grasp what they’ve gotten themselves into until it’s way too late. I’m in awe of Stephen King for having understood so much about humanity at the age of 18 or 19 when he wrote this. It’s an adult story, but written with a young person’s perspective, probably of the Vietnam War; it’s kind of an allegory, I’m guessing, for his fears of being sent to Vietnam at the time.

Finally got around to finishing this book. Can’t wait to see what Ovredal does with it.
