And crop out all of the 'haha' backround (including the couple in the gaps at either side of his head), resize it to acceptable forum size & make it a 'png' so it's got a similar effect as my current avi.. ?

No, but you did what I couldn't & remove the bulk of the backround so I was able to use my freebie editing software to touch up the edges as best I can & get rid of the remaining backround:

• Can have an Avatar that is 46KB large (default for other is 20KB)

If you can link a video, or a gif from an image hosting site it would help.
Sites like Pandawhale are blocked in my country, so I won't be able to see a gif if it carries that name in its link.

I tried doing that at noon in my time zone, had the same result with my 4mb upload. It's a shame this new version doesn't show us the limit of allowed attachment size, at least not yet.

Can I know what your gif is from? I might be able to find the right source on the internet later.
