To make them from trailers, or youtube videos, I use CamStudio. Then save what ever is recorded and reopen it at Gif Animator, to delete frames, resize, etc., for avatars.

Does this Cam Studio program cost money or can you get it free?

if you already have the file its open video and it splits it into frames.
i need to see if it opens .flv files though
