The Official Checkmate thread

Considering Willingham has made his money on completely bastardizing fairy-tale characters...

I'd hardly call reinterpretations of fairy tales "bastardizations." Those characters have been interpreted a hundred different ways each already.

Oh, I like Fables, but pretty much every interpretation of those characters except the Grimm versions has been something of a bastardization.

Can you give me an example (besides the obvious like Bigby Wolf)? I never did get around to getting more familiar with the earliest forms of most fairy tale characters.

Dr. Swinehart (The Three Army Surgeons)
Snow White
Sleeping Beauty
Cinderella
Little Red Riding Hood
Rapunzel
...and so, so, so many others.

Mind you, there were even earlier versions of all of these, but the Brothers Grimm created the definitive, and in my opinion undeniably the best, versions.

Another guy to check out is Hans Christian Anderson. He did some of your classics like The Ugly Duckling, the Emperor's New Clothes, the Snow Queen, the Little Mermaid, etc., and while these are mostly original creations and not those sort of "sordid early fairy tales" that the feminists and conspiracists can't shut the **** up about, they are good examples of early fairy tale craftsmanship.

Yeah, I know about the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson and Aesop. I wanted an example of how Willingham's portrayal of one of those characters differed from theirs.

Fall of the Wall was freakin' great. I thought that Waller was gonna screw them all but they totally pulled a 180 on her. Dumb beotch and her nanites! HA! Waller got hers!

Between this book and the Suicide Squad miniseries I'm getting some great storytelling otu of DC lately. :o

Rucka isn't renewing his DC Exclusive contract. He's not leaving comics either. He's been venting his frustrations with DC on his blog for some time, and it's pretty visible in his latest entry.

All this according to his recent blog entry.

I just skimmed through the last month or so of his blog posts and I didn't find much at all about any frustrations with DC. He barely even talks about his comics, in fact. He usually rants about politics and the news.

What are you talking about?

Nah, he's been venting about DC comics on and off this year, notably about their execution of OYL and their handling of Montoya in Countdown. There may be more instances that I'm not remembering.

Or maybe it just seems like he's doing it a lot because average writer behavior is to simper and kowtow and never say a bad word about any of the upper management no matter how obvious their real feelings are. For any writer to actually, directly disapprove of anything that either company does is so rare that it may look like a bigger deal than it is.

Either way, we lose. Rucka has such a good handle on DC characters, and it's too bad he's disassociating with them more and more.

Eh, Rucka himself mishandled Montoya back in 52, so I'm not terribly concerned with his thoughts on her anymore. He said way back that he'd never make her a superhero, so that kind of puts what his word regarding characters is worth in perspective. :o

Can't say I'm sad to see him not renew his exclusive with DC, either. It'll be a shame to see Checkmate inevitably spiral into craptastitude without Rucka, but there are a lot of other books I think Rucka would kick ass on at Marvel and elsewhere, and the idea of more creator-owned stuff from him sounds good too.

Pfah. Indie books are for hippies and poor people.

their handling of Montoya in Countdown.
What handling of Montoya in Countdown?

So the reason we've seen less of him is that he really is gonna leave?

Just because he leaves his exclusive at DC doesn't mean he has to go exclusive at Marvel. He COULD stay on Checkmate.

Just because he isn't signing an exclusivity contract doesn't actually mean he will stop working on DC books. Mark Waid hasn't been exclusive for a while has he?

It just means they can't peddle their **** at him.

If he's not renewing his exclusive contract because DC's been pissing him off, it seems unlikely to me that he'd continue writing a DC book. Plus, there's the chance that DC could just kick him off the series. But anything's possible, I guess.

So they drew Montoya badly. Big deal. She shouldn't be the Question in the first damn place. :o

Awww Corp.

Get over it.

I'll get over it when Vic Sage is the Question again and Montoya is a hard-boiled cop working a beat. It's not so much that one died and was replaced, or that the other left her day job, it's that he smushed the two together in a way that just doesn't work for me.

Still, if it were just Montoya as the Question in Crime Bible, I'd probably give it a chance. Jaime Reyes proved to me that legacy heroes who come way out of left field aren't always terrible. But then he had to go ahead and throw Batwoman in. Unbearable, god-awful, rage-inducing Batwoman, who should've died from the knife to the heart in 52. God, I hate her.

If he's not renewing his exclusive contract because DC's been pissing him off, it seems unlikely to me that he'd continue writing a DC book.
If he cares about his craft, he won't leave his book in the hands of an incompetent.
